GTA IV Syndrome

Post » Fri Oct 22, 2010 10:59 pm

GTA IV was announced around the same period and with the same quarter for release (but due to compatibility issues was not release of 4 or 5 months later) as Skyrim.

I have been perusing this forum for the last 2 or so months and joined of the 5th of this month ( 4 days before the “Ask Questions” topic arrived ) and I have been so hyped about this game since I saw the first trailer which practically gave nothing away.

Now to the FEAR. I realised the other day that I have been doing things the exact same or even at a more extreme that what I did whit the announcement of GTA IV (checking news at least twice a day, thing like that), why is this important you may ask.

GTA IV was ok for me; I was expecting the best game ever made(I bought a PS3 for GTA IV and as some of you will remember that was one of the earlier if not the first edition of the PS3 which I paid €600 ($850, £530) for ). On the PS2 I had a GTA SA save file with 175 hours of game play (this does not include the many many times I played and DIDN’T save) and loved every minute of it and to me has been the most fun game I have ever played, I was just expecting too much from GTA IV and it destroyed the game for me, I destroyed the game for me.

I am now very fearful that the same thing will happen with Skyrim and I won’t enjoy it as much as I should, that is why after E3 I am disconnecting myself form the world of Skyrim by forbidding myself form news hunting until the game is out (or maybe a week before).

So are there any other crazy people like me out there or what do you think?

I've been thinking of doing something similar myself. I remember how I overhyped Medieval II. A really great game, but I wanted it to be like Rome was to me the first time I played it. I ended up putting it down almost immediately.

GTAIV is a shell of it's former self. It was one of my most anticipated games ever and I followed development very closely. People that complain about TES being dumbed down need to look at San Andreas and then look at GTAIV. You'll then realize what "dumbing down" is all about.

I don't think this is going to be a problem with Skyrim. San Andreas and GTA 4 are totally different games, but Skyrim is mostly sticking to the tried-and-true formula of Oblivion and Morrowind. I can relate though, OP. I loved San Andreas, but GTA 4 just wasn't that good for me. It's impressive, but it just isn't as fun. Here's to hoping GTA 5 will be more like San Andreas.

I can see where you're coming from. I'm pretty much resigned to the fact that Skyrim isn't going to live up to all of the hype, just as I was resigned to the fact that GTA IV wouldn't live upto the hype either.

GTA IV wasn't a bad game by any means. For me it wasn't just the hype that let it down, the main thing which made it worse than San Andreas or Vice City for me was the setting. I didn't like the contemporary Liberty City setting in GTA III, so I was never going to fall in love with it in GTA IV.

I'm still not convinced i'll like Skyrim's setting as much as Morrowind or Cyrodiil, so there's another parallel between Skyrim and GTA IV for me.

By way of an answer.... there are posters on this forum (check for registration dates in '04 or '05 or such) who have still not forgiven Beth for Oblivion. It's about guaranteed that some people are going to be disappointed, and there's always the possibility that many will be, or that those who are go beyond disappointment to knuckle-biting rage. All other things aside, that's just a part of the human condition - the higher you get your hopes up, the better the chance they won't be met.

Though I wasn't a part of the forums then, I kept fairly close tabs on Oblivion and was very excited for it, since I've played TES games since Daggerfall was new. And I hated it when I first played it. Absolutely hated it. Over time, I gave in and just basically ignored the parts of it I continue to hate, and came to enjoy the game overall. I still don't like it as much as either Morrowind or Daggerfall, but I play it more than both, so that's something. But I'm not going to set myself up again. (Much to the irritation of many on this forum) I have relatively low expectations for Skyrim, but that's only in part because of my disappointment with Oblivion. In part it's that I hope to be pleasantly surprised. That, to me, is just the better way to approach it.

And on the side-topic - I've never played GTA IV. I don't dare. I love III, Vice City and especially San Andreas, and I've heard too many stories from too many fans who were disappointed with IV. I don't need that. If I'm in the mood for GTA (as I often am), I'll replay VC or SA. Or even III.

Well I thought DA2 was going to be a good game, until the demo.

I definately see your point. You can easily over hype a game to yourself to the point that it can't live up to the expectations. This may happen to ES-V for me, but I am convenced I can learn to live with it.

Keeping yourself from getting over hyped about the game is not something others can do for you, it's something you have to do yourself, and if avoiding all new information on Skyrim after E3, then I'd say go ahead. It sounds like you already know you want the game, so continuing to listen to the hype would just increase the risk of getting TOO hyped about it and being dissappointed as a result. I, however, probably wouldn't be able to keep myself away from Skyrim information even if I wanted to, so I don't expect to be doing the same.

you were probably just expecting too much because you were anticipating for so long. GTA IV was the best GTA by far, in my opinion.

yup, after E3 (which isn't showing gameplay anyways, or so i hear) I'm not going on the forums, nor am i searching for news. i will do my best to distance myself from the franchise until its release. It wont be so hard seeing as i'll have the summer, which i spend pretty much outdoors, and the fall, in which i try to focus on getting a good start in my classes. i dont think it'll be that bad, honestly. i'll forget about it, and BAM! Skyrim will be in my hand :ahhh:

I absolutely loved the original Medieval Total War and hated Rome when it first came out because of the changes they made.

I guess it just depends on which game you're used to. Same as how some Daggerfall fans dislike Morrowind, while some Morrowind fans dislike Oblivion. It doesn't necessarily mean that any game in the series is outright bad.

i feel the exact opposite to this i felt gta was a huge improvement in both gameplay and story over all the gtas proceding it, they removed all the superfluous kinda stupid crap from sa (being able to become really fat), took a more serious approach to story telling and really tightened up the shooting and driving. Thats just me though others prefer sa infact most of my friends do, but on topic ive done this in the past with many games( bioshock was a big one) and now i find i try to keep my hopes realistic, i dont expect skyrim to be the greates rpg or game ever, just a good one that i will most likely sink lots of time into

You have to learn from your experience. Just think Fallout 3 with refined animations and graphics and a few nice new features, then you won't be dissapointed.

the next one i did was RIFT, which was good, but couldn't hold my interest.

Since you're not allowed to swear on this forum, I can't talk about GTA IV. I mean it.

To me, Skyrim is an open world I'm free to live in. I'm sure I'll like it.

Considering how bad the original was, I don't see how Two Worlds 2 could be anything but a pleasant surprise. I mean, it's noowhere near being in the same league as an Elder Scrolls game (and it would be wrong to expect it to be), but I still found it very entertaining for 30hrs+.

@Boppo Quick question. You prefer Oblivion over Morrowind?

in certain aspects yes, i felt they ob had greatly improved combat and the controls werent as clunky, obviously the graphical improveements were great and i prefer voice acting to text. Mw did other things better than ob such as atmoshpere, story(certain parts) and the magic system. I dont feel comparing gta sa to IV is the same though its a completelty different thing (apart from both tes and gta being open world) I dont think sa benefited from all those inane and pointless (imo sort of tacky) features. Id prefer a more involving story an tighter gameplay over inane choices any day, but i can see why you some people preferred sa, i mean flying those jets was sweet and all the other crazy stuff you could do was amazing. I think the saints row series or just cause are the spiritual successors to sa
