I've never taken GTA online yet. Do you have to meet any special requirement to join your group? It would be nice to play with people I somewhat know from our friendly community here while I learn the ropes.

Yes. To join BGSF, one must undertake the proving and then three tasks.

To prove youself worthy, you must utilize ramps and the Sanchez motorcyle to destroy an aerial vehicle.

Then begin the tasks. First, you must record footage of yourself taking out three tanks by driving Gauntlets packed with explosives into them. Should this give the leaders an acceptable 'splosiongasm, you will be permitted to take the second test.

For the second test, one must use the Heavy Sniper Rifle to make a kill. You musr only use one bullet. The kill must be made from the top of Mount Chilliad, and the target must be standing atop a skyscraqer on the edge of Los Santos. A crew member will volunteer for target duty.

You final test is to capture five bounties. These bounties can only be taken one way: a crew member will take you up above the cloud cover in a helicopter. You must leap from the helicopter and kill the five targets using the momentum of your fall. To clarify, you have to jump out of a helicopter onto a mans head, killing him. You must do this five times.

There really shouldn't be any doubt that Rockstar will be doing something for the 4th of July. Again, they had events for Christmas and Valentine's Day, and the 4th of July is probably the best other occasion where they could go all-out with something. I'm kind of looking forward to it, especially since I wasn't able to participate in the Christmas event.

HOWEVER, you're going to need to convert your real money into to GTA money if you want to afford the DLC items, such as the AMC Pacer that costs $140 grand. But you already knew that, this is EA we're talking about!
