Guess that Ore

Thorium as an ore? Isn't it radioactive?
Btw, I get the reference

Yeah, but there's an isotope (232, I think?) that's ridiculously stable and has a half-life of somewhere in the billions of years. Supposed to be the majority of naturally occurring thorium. Not sure what good it would do... maybe heat-resistance?

Please let it not be brilliant sea green/aquamarine with billowing smoke issuing forth from it.

Daedric.

Deadric is not an ore, rather than ebony with some poor deadrea stuffed into it.

Sounds about right to me

edit:
perhaps bonemould or chitin will be classed as an "ore" (despite not being an ore, but still mouldable )

The skeletal remains of your fallen adversaries now counts as an ore for armor crafting?? Good; now my char just need stock up on the resins to craft those expensive collector's bonemold armor sets.

I expect we'll see some more fantasy materials, but what about Lead ore. Maybe it could be used as a supplement when forging weapons and armor. It could increase their duribility, but would also increase their weight as well.

I dont think lead would increase durability. Its soft and has a low melting point. Granted, I dont know how it would behave in fantasy alloys.

Not in TES.

Ebony is one of the most precious substances in the empire, mainly found in Vvardenfell, deep in Red Mountain. Raw ebony itself is an extremely hard, durable, black glass-like substance, said to be the crystallized blood of the gods. It is protected by Imperial law, and may not be mined or exported without an Imperial charter.

Ebony armor is made by taking the substance and folding it onto itself over and over again into strips, then the strips are molded into the shape of a cuirass or shield. It is one of the best types of armor available to adventurers, second only to Daedric armors. This is understandable, as Ebony is used to make Daedric armors and weapons using a process involving magic practices only known to the lesser creatures of Oblivion.

It's been a kind of ore in http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Ebony http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Ebonyin the http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Ebony_Bow#Ebony_Bow.

I can't think of anything for Number 13, except something ridiculous like Platinum, or a fictional material we haven't seen in a previous Elder Scrolls game.

Forget perks. Uncovering the lost crafting secrets of the dwarves should be its own quest.

I actually wrote a tl:dr suggestion post about something like this back in '08 before the forum reform. Adding a great level of value to exploration by getting the crafter out of the smithy, and into the world to discover techniques was something I really wanted to see done, and this was before we even knew crafting (or even that the next game was Skyrim) was going to be in. So yeah, I really hope something like this happens.

The same could be said for all crafting, and even some of the magics. Though rare, finding stuff like the Secrets of the Dwemer Animaculti (spelling?) was great, even if it wasn't particularly useful.

I'm open to the idea of more than one kind of stalhrim.

Maybe some sort of glass/obsidian made by dragon fire.

Ebony + Daedric soul?
Stalhrim?
Bronze?

I'd give Steel its own category.

Steel is man made, mate.

I am not even sure Stalhrim would be a viability. I thought it was something only used in Solsthiem to protect the dead that could not be returned to Skyrim.

Still, it does make more sense than a lot of others.

As for Dwemer materials, I always thought Dwemer armor and weapons were made of Orichalcum. "Mountain Copper", or in some sense, a Copper-Gold alloy.

Maybe not technically, but Bethesda may be just lumping them together under one title for now. I do though hope there are 13 regular ores as well as other material like glass, ivory, ebony, leather, fur, bones, dragon scales etc to smith from. At E3 hopefully they will give more detail based on the fact they have released the info just before

I would also be interested to hear whether of not we can create things like pendants and rings from these materials or whether it will be restricted to just weapons and armour

In the Elder Scrolls, http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Raw_Glass and http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Ebony ARE ores.

Yeah but hopefully with their refining of the games mechanics they will call them something else and keep ores such as things that are real world ores like bronze or lead. With Ebony being wood it should really be described as something else.

Now I am not a huge lore buff so I don't know how certain things have been described throughout the previous 4 games. If ebony has been described as an ore before is it better to keep it as one for consistency or should it be, altered slightly to have a more real life distinction between it and bronze? for example

Not sure if 'Nordic silver' is made from legular silver but I'm pretty sure Nordic silver is one.

E. Also http://cms.elderscrolls.com/sites/default/files/tes/screenshots/TrollFireSword_wLegal.jpg sword looks like it's made from nordic silver to me.

If we're talking about ores specifically for smithing and not just for being an object of worth in the game, surely having high-end ores such as ebony and glass etc. would contradict what seems to be a fairly ubiquitous opinion of wanting ebony and glass armours to be rare... maybe you'd have to be of a certain skill or have a perk requirement for making such armours (now I think about it that would have to be a must)? I'd be perfectly happy to not have every in-game ore as something that you can smith with though, but just some valuable loot that can be obtained in mines (with great difficulty) that would add a bit of colour to the world...

But anyway, Obsidian would be an amazing ore to have but then that doesn't really fit in with the lore of the game I suppose. It might be good to have more basic ores such as iron etc. that can be combined to make more complex weapons and armours from composite materials. Iron + coal = steel or tin + copper = dwemer (going off the bronze colour of the armour in game)?

EDIT: Dwemer armour hasn't been made since the dwarves were around so you probably couldn't forge it...

Amber & Madness possibly returning? Well, maybe not Madness... Unless it's part of Sheo's Daedric Quest. Or near it. I don't know.
