Guess that Ore

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 2:47 am

13 types of ore for Smithing what are they?

1 Iron (steel is Iron + Coal)
2 Silver
3 Gold (Jewellery? Rings and Pendants as "smithing" can mean more than just weapon smithing, as in Goldsmith)
4 Mithril
5 Glass (Ebony and Glass both come from the now erupted Red Mt. and mined in destroyed Vvardenfell so their existence as a gatherable raw material is suspect)
6 Ebony (Possibly can be ritually enchanted with Deadra essence to become Deadric)
7 Adamantium
8 Tin
9 Copper (Tin + Copper = Bronze)
10 Stalhrim
11 Coal
12 Zinc (Copper + Zin = Brass)
13 Dwarf / Dwemer (it is made from its own rare material [ http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Item_Materials_and_Styles#Materials_and_Styles ] and some Skyrim cities are built on Dwemer ruines.

Can't think of how Amber or Madness would fit.

So, that is my (present) final guess of the 13!

Ebony + Daedric soul?
Stalhrim?
Bronze?

I'd give Steel its own category.

Thats a good question. I'm suprised and excited that there are 13 types of ore. The last post I read on this people mistook ore as any raw matertial, i.e. wood, leather, bone etc.

Maybe there are a few types of glass, volcanic? Making black glass armor and weapons would be cool.

Copper.

We'd need Tin to make Bronze, but I'm not going to go out on a limb and say there's tin as well.

Stalhrim, how could I have missed the most obviously Skyrim of the lot?

-Bronze is a mix of Tin and Copper, both could be in. Giving 3. Steel can be refined from Iron, which is actually an ore.

So, at this point we must ask, are ores actually ores (keeping in mind fantasy ores) and do we refine them into higher grade alloys like Steel from Iron?

Possibly Dwemer? Not as in unrefined ore per se, but smelted down/reused from scrap and such found in Dwemer ruins?

Daedric.

Not Daedric. Why?
Daedric is actually ebony which has been... uh.. been changed through rituals and whatnot.

Coal might be an ore in game for refining your iron into steel.

Specifically, according to the Orc in Suran, Daedric is ebony refined using the techniques of the lesser minions of Oblivion. The process is apparently painful, and "A portion of the Daedras suffering" is infused with the finished product.

So basically, how I read that, Ebony is like Iron, and Daedric is like Steel, with Scamp Tears as the carbon.

So it actually says "ore" for smithing? So we'll see more than 13 materials than right? For non-ore stuff like bones, leather, etc?

Interesting.... Coal could potentially be useful in many regards as both carbon and forging heat source..... though in a world where everyone know Fireball coal's usefulness as such may be questionable....

I think you are right. But there are contradictory sources, like the Manual of Armor and Manual of Arms that list ebony and daedric as clearly two separate materials.

Adamantium, generally, is used as a name for some completely BS metal, usually some kind of plot device, or in this case, a pretext for diversity (Which I still think could have been better added by making more types of armor like brigandines and plate-mail and hauberks etc.)

I disagree with that whole idea of magic replacing technology. Because than this whole thread would be pointless and we would ONLY have bound weapons and armor. And plus, I don't think your typical blacksmith is going to be well trained enough to keep a fire spell going while making masterwork weapons/armor. And I don't think he's going to spend the gold to hire a mage to stand by and keep his furnace hot. Coal is much cheaper, hypothetically, if my imagination isn't running wild...

I'd like to know as well. I think it might have been the magazine article that came out recently. But I'd like an actual quote. Time for some google-fu.

I'd like to know the total types of materials besides ores, like wood and leather and bones, etc.

It might be weird to see 13 types of metallic ore, and only one kind of wood...
