I guess you will be able to mute the voice?

Post » Tue Dec 01, 2015 8:50 pm

Ok folks - people are allowed to civilly air their opinions - and some people care about a voice protagonist, some don't. You are allowed to civilly disagree with said opinions. That is called a discussion. Or even an "Exchange of views".

So a particularly rude post was removed. You don't get to come in and call someone immature because you don't like their opinion or topic - that is called "rude and pointless". Don't post unless you feel like contributing.

Also, can the spammy "omg, this topic has been discussed before". It has, and it will be again. This is the internet, where things get rehashed frequently.

The devs deem what is right for their games, we merely play them. If you don't like a mechanic, tough [censored]. A developer shouldn't cater to any one person's or minority groups wants, but be able to make the game in which ever fashion they choose.

Muting the protagonist is definitely not going to be added as a feature. They've spent time and money on this, not to mention that the dialogue scenes (time it takes to talk, protagonist lips moving, NPCs reacting to said things in real time) would suffer a lot of you simply muted the protagonist. Definitely going to be something we simply must accept, and move on.

All games have volume settings for various aspects, I don't see why FO4 would be any different. I feel fairly confident you can mute voices and just get subtitles.

A game is an offering of a product for sale.

  • It's not mad because it will be wildly popular (and personally I think it's a big improvement).
  • It's not dictatorial because it's a product which people can choose to buy or not.

So, having established that neither of those things are true, let's turn to the possibility that you might not like the voiced protagonist for reasons that have been well debated.

A voiced protagonist has such a significant impact on how the game is scripted and how dialogue is delivered

that I don't think it is viable for Bethesda to have offered a simple toggle, and why would they? I'm sure they are very pleased with their efforts.

it's up to you whether you will indulge in the game as produced, and see whether it works for you despite serious misgivings,

or you could wait for a mod that someone will inevitably make that will make the game worse by its application in my opinion, but your mileage may vary.

So you haven't actually PLAYED a Beth game with a voiced protagonist and are just imagining that it will be something you dislike from the few conversations we have seen in a short video?

I get your asking about the ability to silence the voice, but your implication that Beth games have bad voiced protagonists (before a Beth game WITH a voiced protagonist is actually released), seems to be a premature opinion based on very little evidence.

Yes, you are right that is a bit obvious.

If there's a part of the game you don't like, then don't buy it. Vote with your dollar. There's no point in starting a thread just to complain while refusing to even consider outside opinions. Bethesda is not going to change a very major feature that they spent a lot of time, money, and energy on just because a very small portion of the fans are unreasobably upset.

Premature are your thoughts on that the voiced protagonist is gonna be amazing to have. I cant judge by a video, but you can. I hope to be wrong and be amazed with the voiced protagonist.

Other games I play aside from Morrowind are all voiced and have been for a long time.

+1 Not no effort but probably little.

Redguard was fully voiced.

Laughs and nods..+1

Redguard, which oddly enough Fallout 4 will somewhat emulate the dialogue system of. (voiced protag, different camera angles while in dialogue, etc)

They sacrificed one RPG element for a better way to tell a story, we just have to hope it pays off. I am very excited for it, I hope we'll get to hear the protag be frustrated, really angry or in deep distress, those are always such powerful moments if they're done right.

You can play any other game that has a voiced protagonist and draw a conclusion from it. Voiced protagonists have always added to my experience, and from what I have heard the actor and actress both sound promising.

I welcome Bethesda's courage to at least try something new. If it's [censored], it's [censored]. If not, then it will mark a turning point in standards for Bethesda RPGs.

considering todd howard is always making games and talking about "player choice" being the primary importance i'm sure there will be some type of slider or toggle to deal with this but we'll see.

Thanks to his warm welcome the OP said he's leaving this forum and may have closed his account. You're the next person that posted so maybe the thread picked up your name as topic starter. TBH I really don't know how these things work, but that's my best guess.

Hmmm, and I thought the thread was going quite well...

Whilst I like the idea of voiced dialogue, which I have experienced in other franchises,

I grant that until we have the game in our hands, any hopes we have for it being awesome (or it not svcking) are still awaiting proof.

There's also the matter of how early reviews will drop, which is a subject for another thread...

Never said it was going to be amazing. I'm just not going to assume it's horrific from less than 15 seconds of video that showed the feature.

NOTHING you have stated anywhere implies you hope it's anything but something you want to not even hear, so your final statement is quite surprising.

Well with me it's just based on personal experience. If I compare the number of play-throughs and hours I've played MW, DAO, OB, Skyrim, FO3 and FONV; and then look at the the same for ME1, ME2, DA2, etc. the time and replays spent on non-voiced PC games far exceeds those of the voiced games. I just prefer putting my own voice and personality on my PC's. That's just me and based on my experiences. I'm not going to tell other's they are wrong for feeling otherwise, but neither is anything their going to say (or beating down or name calling, etc.) going to change how I feel.

I think the amount of self-insertion players utilise must also play a role here.

I never play as 'me' so I guess I'm much more comfortable that a character I control has a voice different to either my own or my conception of their voice.
