Guessing the skill list!

Post » Mon Aug 02, 2010 2:53 am

Now we know that there will be 18 skills in skyrim, we also know that mysticism has been cut! As said, this is not necessarily anything bad. Let's guess away!
I'll start, this is my ideal scenario:

Marksman
One handed
Two handed
Polearm
Block
Hand to hand
Destruction
Alteration
Conjuration
Illusion
Restoration
Enchant
Alchemy
Sneak
Security
Acrobatics
Speechcraft & Mercantile
Smithing

An important thing here is that I don't foresee any classification like in previous games, since there are no classes. Skills will probably be based just on attributes, that's the way I see it.

I think it's more plausible that mercantile and speechcraft are still seperate, but polearms isn't in the game (however much people want it to be). Also I think we're going to see racial perks to differentiate races more than in oblivion. For example, Orcs can get a nice bonus to blunts while not being good with swords. Same can be done for light and heavy armour perks to fill the gap that those skills left.

Spears are such a basic and wanted weapon, if anything it would be included before swords. At least if I made the game...
I change my "block" skill into a defense skill that handles all things about defense like evading and parrying etc. too.

One handed
Two handed
Polearm

I think your classifications might be a bit too specific. I was thinking it would simply be divided into 1 & 2 handers, spears included.

I just think that they're not necessary.

Edit: schnell olfy, could be, but a spear and a two handed sword are too different to be in the same class. Gets even worse when comparing a 1-handed spear to a dagger for example.

If there is just the one armor skill, you can probably define light medium or heavy with the perks you get each time you level up

Armor skills make no sense at all. Maybe it helps a little to learn how to move around in it, but we have 18 skills and that's wasted IMO.

Wouldn't polearm fall under two handed?

Not if it's one-handed. If it's 2-handed, it's still way too different from other 2-handed weapons to be in the same class.
Just came to think about that mount and blade has this system, just with crossbows and throwing as extra skills. And combat in mount and blade=king.

^_^ true.

I just have a bit of a competing list in Orzorn's thread, so I must slander as much as possible.

Just for that special felling. When you had it in morrowind and then they remowed it from oblivion was just wrong. You didn′t use the spear in morrowind that much but when they didn′t added it to oblivion. Well you don′t know what you have untill you lose it

Spears helped with that specific build feeling. I've had 6+ characters in Morrowind but the Argonian spearman was the one that stood out because it felt so different. It's also an interesting change in fighting style.

What class is smithing and crafting under? Classes are still in because in the article todd mentions the magic class and the five skills associated with it.

The other games had them as part of there lore and background, they even had book on armor - The Armorer's Challenge, Manual of Armor, and Bone. Getting rid of armor skils would really piss all over what the previous games set down.

Assuming one fewer skill from each of the 3 divisions (http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Skills)...

I'd bet on Athletics and Acrobatics getting axed.

So long as we still have a speed attribute, the main bonuses from these could easily be integrated into perks.

Moreover, they were among the most exploitable skills with absurd results. Supers-speed walking and moon jumping are likely to go if, as Todd says, they want to make the world look more believable (he mentioned how dumb it looked that you backed up at the same speed you ran forward, and we all know these skills can result in some pretty dumb-looking antics when they reach higher levels).

There is 3 categories of skills: Magic, Combat and "Thief".

Crafting is probably with the Alchemy skill, while Smithing probably replace Armorer (a Combat skill in Oblivion).

7 attributes do not fit into the 18 skills well.

I guess its about time I clarify this. I am expecting 6 attributes and an additional attribute of luck. Speed being the likely cut, so when speed was mentioned I assumed the other 6, leading to my statement.

^ I'd have liked them to have kept attributes and 21 skills. I guess this was their way of solving attribute allocation on leveling up - remove them altogether. Be careful what you wish for I guess..

I'll for now guess 5 combat/magic/stealth and a new misc-crafting group for alchemy, enchant, and smithereens.

I would think Smithing under Combat (armorer), Enchant under Magic, and Alchemy under Stealth (because it kind makes sense, right?)

Bolded are skills we know exist:

Blade (or 1h)
Blunt (or 2h)
Marksman
Block
Light Armor
Heavy Armor
Restoration
Alteration
Alchemy
Illusion
Conjuration
Destruction
Enchanting
Smi
thing (almost certainly smithing but the word was cut off half way, who knows it could be Smiting Dragons!)
Sneak
Security
Mercantile
Speech

Hand to Hand is worthless and I hope they cut it out unless it was seriously improved.
