Guild Wars

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 5:00 am

Well I was looking for some games like DA:O and Mass Effect. As some may remember me in those posts, as I was cleaning my basemant I found my Guild Wars Trilogy DVD. So I stopped looking for those games because they are not appropriate for my son. (basically what I play he plays, like father like son I guess, so I have to wait a few more years before playing those games with him.)

I know I haven't gotten far with Guild Wars, did only one or two quests. So I am installing it now. I guess when it is finished installing, and hopefully have no problems recovering my account (if I can rememeber what it is) and ready to start anew, I gguess it will update to it's lates version then and there. My question is, after a year or two buying this (I can't rememeber when maybe over 12 months ago) is there anything new for Guild Wars I should be aware of? Is there anythign I should do? On my DVD I have Guild Wars (of course), Factions and Knightfall. It says I have an exclusive Golem Hero what ever that is. What do I do with this Golem?

So what should I do? Do I have everything I need? I can't rememeber been so long. I guess with 3 parts, it should last me for a while.

So any hints, or tips you guys and gals can give me?

Thanks for taking the time to read this. :)

Not much has changed in the past year.

The golem hero is an NPC controlled "companion" of sorts, in which you can customize their armor setup and skill load-out. It is unique to people having all 3 campaigns, though there are many "heroes" throughout the campaigns, but only unlocked for those that have Nightfall.

What should you do? Totally up to you. If you have the Eye of the North expansion, and plan on playing Guild Wars 2, then I would strongly suggest working on filling up the hall of monuments so you can get all the unique bonus items upon starting Guild Wars 2.

The only addition to those would be the final episode, Eye of the North, which continues the story and puts it on the path to GW2.

You can use the same character through all campaigns, by changing between those at the hub city of each, use a different one for each (my preference, since you'll see the whole story that way), get heroes to help you now (AI controlled and not measured to the current area like henchmen), and even use your own characters as heroes now, for a small fee.
How you enjoy the RP part of Guild Wars is completely up to you.

Very much has changed, apparently those two posters above me do not play anymore.

EoTN is the expansion, crucial if you want to get bonus items in GW 2, not so much if you don't care about that. But it does have some of the hardest enemies/areas around so it's pretty fun. Also more heroes.

Anyways, many updates have happened since then, Mesmer skill overhaul so a lot of mesmer skills are pretty nice now. Ritualist skill overhaul, same goes with that. Dervish skill overhaul, same goes with that. Of course there are a few main skills which stick out above all the rest.

This past month a huge update (not big in mb size) came out that allows everyone to use 7 heroes, so no more using crappy henchmen, now you can pick all the skills of your team. Of course you don't have them unlocked so it won't be as sweet for you.

They also added a main hub, where you can access any place from all 3 games (plus expansion), so you don't have to travel to multiple places just to get to a mission or outpost. They also added some title changes, but you probably won't care about that...unless you like that sort of thing or want bonus items for GW 2.

Before you buy EoTN I'd play through each campaign and see if you like it. You don't really need all the heroes for that, but I'd recommend it. Although that would require you playing the campaigns out of timeline. Because heroes are much better than henchies and it's not entirely easy to find a team anymore because well a lot of people play with heroes.

But that hero changed basically made it possible to achieve things at a much faster pace, and for those players who aren't that good or can't devote much time to the game, possible to achieve things which they couldn't before.

Whoa, when did that happen? I've not played for two weeks, and they do something like this all of a sudden when I only stopped because of tedious travelling last month? Woot!

(I mentioned most of the other stuff though, except for the obvious class revamps that happen now and then. Don't be so mean!)

Embark Beach was added in the last couple of weeks or so, along with the ability to put seven heroes in your party now. Dervishes were buffed even more recently than that, I think. The golem MOX that the OP mentioned is a dervish hero that you can add to your party starting at level 10. I've been playing the Trilogy edition and Eye of the North since last summer, and enjoying it overall (though I can see the improvement in the game that the later games brought, such as Nightfall and Eye of the North).

The upcoming Guild Wars 2 is going to be great from what has been shown so far -- events will have lasting consequences instead of resetting every time you leave an area. ArenaNet hasn't said when it's coming out, but early 2012 is one estimate.

My wife and I haven't played in awhile, we are patiently waiting for GW2. I loved GW for the fact that I was best at being some type of mage in the game, other games I always gave up mage. Fire Elementalist FTW, NUKE EM HARD!!! I used to drop groups of enemies all at once in Nightfall. My Guild mates would get pissed because I accidently would take all the kills sometimes.....lol Again looking forward to trying it on GW2. :flamethrower:

I was working on the Survivor title... made it all the way to level 19 and was about 3/4 of the way to level 20 when I had a lag spike and died.

Stopped playing and haven't been back since.

Oh wow, sorry to hear that. Seriously I have always heard the same story from other people. Even myself had the same experience. One way or another you end up dying right before frikkin 20. :banghead:

It happened with the March 3, 2011 update if I recall right, and took place the same time they allowed the use of 7 heroes. I almost was tempted to play this again when I get home but since my guild got screwed up due to some unknown poilcy implemented by ArenaNet where inactive players get the leadership transferred due to inactivity, but in my case was outright removed, that made me not want to play. And since now there are 7 hero parties it seems like all the real player interaction would be gone. If they allowed for offline play now I would definately go back and play again. But until then due to my issues with the business model ArenaNet seems to be adopting and my previous game issues I don't think I will play again for quite some time.

Ah, you need to know one of your character by name, that is what is supposed to make the game safer. Me, I just wrote one down. Just in case. Never know what will fall through the holes in my head next. ^_^

Now all of your characters can get survivor at any time. Once you die, you just have to gain back all the xp. Say you die at 120k xp, well all you'd have to do is get back to 120k xp. So it's no longer possible to not get survivor. Everyone can get it, you just have to keep living. Also the Dervish buff came out one week before Embark Beach did. I started playing again right after the dervish buff and got a nice little surprise with Embark Beach that made me start playing the game again.

In anticipation for GW2 I reinstalled GW and to my surprise learned of the new Pre -Searing dailies. I had been working on LDoA but once I hit 18 I couldnt for the life of me get a death levelling session to not disconect. So I finally was able to get it :) Now to play through all of prophecies again, cause it's by far my favourite.

Me and my Warrior went through every single campaign in sequence, up to the final boss in Eye of the North, right before I shipped out to boot camp. It's a great game when you really sit down and focus on the story, rather than the side quests. I think Nightfall was my favorite, but Eye of the North was very fun too. I wish I could still find my good friend from that run, but every time I log on there is no sight. We were going to try and defeat one of the super hard dungeon-style runs in Nightfall, in the Abyss or something. Oh well.

Also: 7 Heroes now?! Wow. That's....wow. I mean it was bad enough for me trying to get my three heroes to a respectable build, but now entire parties?

Yes I finally got it going. Looks like I miss typed my name when I first started playing and that is why nothing was being accepted plus I changed my password on the master account not on the GW account. So happy to be playing now.

@BroonProtR3, you mentioned playing with Heroes. I do not understant what that means. Does that mean I play with other people, or I make my own? If it's making my own, how do I do this?

If you have Nightfall or EotN you can get heroes. Which are basically henchman that start at a certain level and level up with you as you use them, you can equip them with weapons and change their armor.

Heroes are like the selectable henchman in most outposts except you access them from the party (press P) window and can select their skills and equip them with whatever weapon you choose and runes and stuff. You can get Olias a necro from Lion's Arch, there's a quest there for him. Which is in the Prophecies campaign. There's also an Assassin hero in the Canthan campaign which you get from Kaineng Center. The most heroes come from Nightfall, you just have to start that campaign first and you'll get 3 heroes (if I remember right, could be 4) within a few hours. More come as you finish story quests in that campaign. You can also get quite a few from the eye of the north expansion pack.

I have the trilogy set, so I have everthing but the expansion pack. The Eye of Terror or what it's called. I will wait to get that. Sorry can't rememeber who said it, but I think the 3 I have should keep me busy for a while now.

So I am thinking of being a male necromancer. I just can't play female since I am male. :)

So any recomendations? I am not sure what the primary skill means, and you can't use a primary skill when having a secondary skill. So what is the primary skill? Also what would be a good secondary skill? I played but back to reading so not playing to long and then wanting to restart because I found out I want to play it differently.

Any more tips or suggestions? What race do you play and why so that will help me get better ideas as well.

One more thing, do you still play? If so, how can I meet you there? Never did a MMO game before, so this is all new to me. Always played SP games.

*edit* I am not sure if the Necromancer is the way I want to go. I love the look of the necromancer, but he/she seems to be more of a support. Since I plan on playing mostly single player, I like to be up close and infront of the battle as well as casting spells or shooting from far away. Is the Necromancer still a good type to use? I guess I still play like any TES games, I am in the front with my big sword, and use magic to back me up and heal me. Like a Jedi who loves using force powers.

So if the necro still fun to play this way, or should I consider something else?

There are all kinds of "builds" for all the classes that can do many different things. Necromancers can be total minion masters who make little groups of like 16 little bone horrors and other summons that just swarm enemies, or they can concentrate on blood magic and get use of tons of vampiric spells to drain enemy life and restore their own.

The point is you can have fun with what you do with your character later on.

Primary Profession means you get the character model, the armor, and the unique primary skill. Like if you picked a Warrior first, that's your primary profession. You LOOK like a warrior, you wear warrior armor, and you have the warrior unique attribute (I think it's Strength and adds armor penetration to attacks). This Warrior can "dual class" with any other profession, and this is the secondary profession. Say you want a Warrior/Monk, which means you get access to all of the Monk skills as well as Warrior skills (except no Monk unique attribute, which is Divinity or something). This means you can heal yourself. Not recommended though. W/Mo's are not well accepted in the community, but it's whatever you want. You could be a Warrior/Necromancer, a Warrior/Ranger (good if you just want the Ranger pet), a Warrior/Elementaist. All of them "work", and all of them have some skills to offer that you can take advantage of.

Some secondary skills you won't use too much. Warriors just don't have the energy to cast things like Meteor Shower. But they can make use of various Elementalist glyphs and buff spells just fine.

Later on in the game you will get to a point where you can choose to change your secondary profession. For free. As many times as you want. So if what you choose doesn't really work out, you can change it later.

You can't solo anything though. It's a team based game, and no matter what you choose you'll be working in a team. Either with other players or with the hired AI henchmen or with the heroes you gain, you'll make use of "support" skills all day long.

Edit: Here I'll re-install. Maybe I'll be able to hop in and help you out, get the early bits of the game and give you pointers there. ^_^

Thanks Steampunk, so since I like the look of the Necromancer, I will choose that then. I didn't know you can change your second class, so that is good.

The only thing throwing me off right now, is no jumping. Seems so wierd playing a game where you can't jump.
