Guilds for old(er) players? Do they exist?

Post » Thu Mar 06, 2014 7:10 am

Apologies for the ignorant question. I looked through many of the advertised guilds on the link often provided by the mods, and couldn't easily identify any that met my preferred requirements. So thought I'd ask here.

I find the prospect of teaming up with others for some casual fun intriguing (on the NA PC server). But, I'd prefer to do this with someone in my own - ahem - age group (30s-40s, or older). Thinking I'll be doing a lot of PvE, but also muck around in PvP. Won't RP, though. Do such guilds exist?

Most of the ones I see "look" young - in that they're self-advertised as hardcoe; or their guild pages are littered with spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors (which I take to mean that the chaps who run the guild are young). Some also have mandatory requirements - which aren't of any interest. Am a strictly casual player who plays for fun, not to be competitive. Couldn't care less whether someone's better or worse than me (most are probably better!).

Do guilds exist for someone like me, or should I focus on forming spur-of-the-moment groups in PvE and simply following the zerg in PvP (or questing)?

Thanks in advance.

Yeah, and more with each passing year (gaming as a hobby spilling over into different age groups).

I was third youngest in my WoW guild (then I was 24). Most mid-30's, some even up in 60's. We were the top ranked horde-side guild, albeit a smaller population server.

And to clarify all I mean by adding top-ranked is that we still played the game just as well. It was actually amusing, people outside of our guild pictured us as these hard-core elitists since we were the only one consistently raiding end-game content, but we were actually quite the opposite. Super chill, no min/max, dps meters were frowned upon, etc.

Why would illiteracy automatically suggest youth? There are plenty of half-literate elders, as well as non-native speakers like myself (though I am also young but my point still stands) who shouldn't be expected to speak English perfectly.

Anyway, if you're concerned about it (which I can understand, us youngsters can be quite stupid lol) why don't you initiate a casual guild of mercenaries for older guys and gals yourself? :P

I'm curious why this is a preference? Is it so you would have more in common with your guildmates? Culture, life experiences, that sort of thing? I'm over 30, and have just never considered age an important factor.

I have seen quite a few guilds with many older players, but don't recall having seen one with only older players.

I don't know - I'm so old so I'll probably co-op play with a friend. :)

Because I'm not motivated enough to organize/run a guild! Also, to clarify: I'm a non-native English speaker. I have no issues with non-natives spelling etc. incorrectly - it is usually very, very easy to identify non-natives on forums. It's normally sentence structure that gives it away - or they self-identify.

It's from console days mainly. Hearing 12-16 year-olds yelling commands on the headset is a complete turn off. Still Happens in games like Arma 3 on public servers too - completely ruins immersion for me. Plus, the younger guys and gals tend to be far more emotional, less level-headed and ultimately much more competitive. I get it - I was probably like it growing up. Just don't want to hear it/deal with it now.

Are you looking for some type of asylum?

Nah, forget about that, kidding. But I'll tell you what: Playing MMOs for the last 17-18 years I've found 60 yo players that act like a 3rd grade bully and 12 yo that you would want to ask for advice and will be always expecting great wisdom from his words.

I have friends that go from 12 to 82 (yeah, 82 yo) and I love to play with them equally, it's not the age, but the person. I'm 50, BTW.

I'm in the same boat as you Katkon, about age and immersion. I also have a condition which means I am genetically unable to multitask, so I simply can't play the game AND have 'voices in my head' (voice chat) at the same time or I become confused with everything I'm trying to do. It means no voice chat for me when I play online games which limits me to guilds that don't require it for membership.

Fair enough. Maturity and age are not the same thing. There just tends to be a strong correlation between the two. The problem with asking for advice on finding a "mature" guild is that no-one thinks of themselves as immature. But I hear you (and agree).

My guild is 18+ and supports many games with about 1300 members. I'm not sure what the average age is, but I'm 61.

Check out clanaod.

Honestly, if you want maturity, find a guild of lisbian transwomen. Most respectful people on the face of the planet, if we're talking about aggregate experiences. (Have met a few transwomen that were less mature, certainly, but on the whole the last guild I was in was amazing in terms of treating other people like valued human beings; I suspect because when you have to work so hard to validate your existence to others, it makes you more respectful of what other people are going through.)

If there are any guilds out there that would be willing to recruit a 27 year old, I would be more than happy to join! Having played League of Legends for the past 4 years, exposure to a more mature group of online gamer's would be a welcome change to my current gaming atmosphere. Maybe I'll finally feel like an advlt!

I'm 29 and think of myself as immature. Just to clear that one up.

Women always tend to find themselves "immature".

And you are not 29, are you?

LoL, just teasing. You can be a 29 yo bald, bearded fat guy and I will like you anyways.

I was a guild leader in DAoC from 2001 til 2006. Invited people regardless of age, but for some reason I managed to pick the older generation. (more serious conversations, same life experience and actually they understood my stupid jokes...) Because of that, I managed to get 3-4 real life friend from different countries (visited each others not because gaming...)

Its kind a difficult to believe that you could do the same with a teenager.

And yes, my English is just horrible, but I am proud of it. (at least I can express myself more or less hehe)
