Thoughts? I think the choice is bizarre myself.
Meh, meaningless subjective opinions polls are meaningless.
As much as some gamers complain about it I'd say that's a stretch, games like Zelda or Mario would be a better choice.
It was a popularity contest. They didn't actually pick it, readers picked it in a poll.
No records are being broken. It's sad to see Guinness stooping to Top 50 lists.
Or is it sad that IGN is reporting it like it's actual news? Everything's sad.
They decided that based on a vote...
Tell me, Guinness, since when has the majority of the world--even more so the majority of video gamers--been even remotely intelligent?
while I am not a fan of CoD (although, I will play it with a friend every once in awhile), this will give me an excuse to bring up a line of thought thats been eating away at the back of my head for about a week...
Gamers keep constantly Complaining when a new game comes out that its not like its predecessor:
people always Complain Oblivion and Skyrim were not Like Morrowind..
they complained Mass Effect 3 was not like Mass Effect 2..
they Complained Dargon Age 2 was not Like Origins..
they complained that Assassins Creed 3 was not like the Ezio Trilogy..
they Complained that every Final Fantasy game after 7 was not like 7..
But then, you get a game like CoD that has its core mechanics down and sticks to them, and these very same people complain saying "ohh, same as the last one? pfft, they need to change it up and experiment, not give us the same thing!"
maybe its people complaining for the sake of complaining, or just being hipsters.. but it makes me shake my head..
Yeah, the record is pretty meaningless.... It just means a lot of people play CoD, which we already knew.
It's like when a pop singer wins the People's Choice award at MTV..... (crickets chirping)
@funnybunny
I think the complaint is that Guinness didn't make the decision and award a record. It's just a fan vote. Not really aimed at the games themselves.
I mostly see people complaining about change when features they like are stripped out. I rarely see someone complain when a game stays mostly the same but adds more features. It's not all black and white, there should be balance.
For example, Assassin's Creed 2 added a ton of features the first didn't have, and a fresh new story, but maintained the same core gameplay. Borderlands 2 introduced more character classes and mechanics, but maintained the same style of gameplay and storytelling. Both are excellent sequels that (arguably) surpass their predecessors. Each Elder Scrolls game has stripped out many roleplaying elements that leave long time fans feeling cold, but add enough new features to keep the games fresh and the fanbase growing. They're barely sequels at all, rather whole new games. Dragon Age 2 removed a lot of features people loved about Dragon Age, so it was poorly received. Call of Duty doesn't change enough, so it feel less like a sequel and more like an expansion pack.

ohh I am aware, but since this thread will almost surely become people complaining about CoD and how it does not deserve such a title, just felt like typing down something thats been sitting in the back of my head
I've been playing COD from the first one until the one that came out last week with the exception of WaW. I played very little of that one. The others though I played a ton. Its certainly the best series I've ever played but I know its not for everyone. I think they picked the COD series based on its success.
I'm not a COD player (only played 1 and 2 back then and I enjoyed them) but I'm not one of the detractors either, I have no reason to. I am sure no matter what game would win a vote like this (WOW, Diablo, The SIms, whatever) would also be bashed for being "mainstream", "popular" (like popularity would be a bad thing, lol) and its merits would be contested. I checked that top 50 list and I think a lot of my favorite series are in, so for me this top is quite relevant.
