Guise Duke Nukem....

Post » Thu Aug 19, 2010 1:40 am

Just watched the trailer - it'll either be a nostalgic, cheesy bit of light entertainment, or an utter flop. I played the old games when I was younger so I have a bit of a nostalgic fondness for it, but it really doesn't look good as anything other than a trip down memory lane (and I didn't like DN enough back then to buy it now).

I highly expect it to be both. Grand for what it is, but hated for what its genre delivers now and it can't keep up with.

Something tells me this game is going to bomb. Ah, it was a friend who played it at PAX. He said it was the worst demo there. I think Duke is a cool guy and all but I'm over it.

Yeah DNF will bomb.
People will buy it just because its DNF. The thing is we are now at a point with to many fps games, and there isnt anything that really stands out, humor isnt enough for a buy and the other stuff is gimmicks.
DNF should have stayed dead, because after 12 years it is just out of place and has too much hype. Better it stayed dead than to come back and have the game tarnished.

But as it's not 1998 any more, the world has moved on and nobody cares.

Looks like it'll be a fun romp. I don't understand why people can't accept that it's not trying to be a super serious game with an engrossing storyline and deep characters. What's wrong with a light-hearted and cheesy game about a ridiculous hero dishing out the pain and humorous quips in equal measure?

People "grew up" perhaps? The world has moved forward, as Yahtzee said we're no longer in the primitive 90's caveman days.

If every game was incredibly serious it would get boring very quickly. Variety is the spice of life.

True, but I wasn't stating that as fact. Merely offering up an explanation. Though I'm sure there are a lot of people that would disagree with us.

I love it when he says stuff like that. Coming from a guy who relies on the brutal effect of low brow humour, you've got to see the irony in this statement.

Gearbox is developing it and publishing it. Biomechstudent's problem with Gearbox, if I recall correctly, is because of the way they treated PC users during the initial release of Borderlands. Back when it first happened I was pretty angry about it, and so was he, as he posted about it in my Borderlands thread... but I have awful long term memory and don't actually remember what it was I was so angry about.

Anyway, I'm more looking forward to reading how the reviewers out there tackle this game than I am actually playing it. But I'm certainly hoping it turns out to be good.

This.

I like video games, so I'm gonna wanna play it, and mabey even have it in my little collection. Since I'm still mad over Borderlands I'm just gonna buy it used so they, Gearbox, looses out on that sale. Other than that, I never buy used games unless its the only way I can get the game.

BLOW IT OUT YOUR SPOTTED OWL

I remember being probably 7 years old, playing Duke Nukem 3D, and not understanding what the nice lady was doing when I waved a dollar bill at her. I showed my dad, and he just laughed. I'm so very ready for this.

Sounds like a great father-son moment

You see 'guise' quite a bit on the site that shall remain nameless. Also, Duke Nukem is only cool nowadays because of the soundboard.

Edit: Grammer.

I'll just repost something I wrote in another thread:

Ugh, why couldn't they have just let Duke Nukem died.

I want my Borderlands sequel Gearbox, not a badly aged relic of the 90's.

Trailer looks like ass by the way.

So it would seem Duke Nukem Forever will beat both Episode 3 Forever and TES V Forever. An era is ending :moved:

But then the trailer would be wrong when it says it took 12 years! :o

They can always remake the trailer to make it even more awesome than before. I don't see how that could possibly be an issue.

I really, really wished they would have released the 98 (quake tech) and 01 (unreal tech) versions of the game. Based on the trailers, each was far in development and look like a ton of fun.

Yes, this is the big game that took twelve years to make.

Take away the Duke Nukem name (which itself doesn't carry any real weight anymore, outside of being a joke), and it's just another derivative FPS in an oversaturated genre.

To put it simply, the idiot who ran 3D Realms, George Broussard, just didn't know when to stop...well, adding things to his game.

Does that mean the game will be stuffed with content?

Comes out a day after my birthday.
Im not really interested in the series, since i've never played it.
Might have to pass on this game, or try it out when it hits the $20 mark.

Not necessarily, by adding things he means tech wise to make it look impressive. They had to scrap work so many times during its development it's not even funny, so don't go thinking there will be a huge amount of content there.
