Gunny's Classroom

Post » Thu Dec 30, 2010 5:56 am

In reponse to requests for the Question of the Day posts from the Weapons, Mods and Ammo thread to be given their own thread (to open discussion to all aspects of FONV) I would like to introduce to you Gunnery Sergeant Earnest T. Hartman:

RECRUITS! When I give you the word, you will get off my bus and fall into my classroom! You will fall in at the position of attention, face and eyes forward! You hear me? No lollygaggin' around my area! FALL IN!

My Name is Gunnery Sergeant Hartman! In my classroom, we will discuss all the ways you will get killed in my wasteland, and how to avoid them. Ready. SEATS! EYEBALLS!

Alright Recruits, the first period of instruction will cover damage.

QUESTION #1

RECRUIT!. Yes YOU! You have just been shot in the cranial area for 20 points of damage! Your brain bucket has a Damage Treshold of 5. How much damage to your frontal lobe gets through? Describe how this works. Why? Does damage threshold accurately represent your armor's ability to reduce damage? Why or why not?

NO sleepin' in my classroom! You want to die out in the wasteland? Drop and give me 10

Correct, Recruit! Why? How does that flimsy metal bucket reduce that damage? You've got a bullet flying at your head at 3000 feet per second. What happens to that bullet so your brain doesn't get splattered all over my wasteland?

-Erm, the impact is reduced by the metal plate protecting my forehead? :looks terrified:

No, Recruit! Don't get ahead of the class. First let's discuss your armor.

Correct Recruit! The velocity of the bullet is reduced by the metal box sitting on your head. Is this how damage threshold works? The velocity loss of the bullet overcoming the resistance of your armor is quantified into it's damage threshold?

Alright Recruits! Listen up. This is how it works in my wasteland: Bullets entering your scrawny little recruitlike bodies will tear through you like bad tacos through your colon. They do this because they have energy. Lots of energy. Energy is defined as mass x velocity2. Generally speaking, the faster and bigger the bullet is, the deeper and bigger the hole they leave in your squishy little bodies. So we cover ourselves with armor to reduce the energy the bullet has before it gets to our vital body parts. What part of the energy does the armor reduce? Does it reduce the speed or the mass of the bullet?

Not neccessarily, Recruit! Bullets come in different metal alloys and construction. Some keep themselves together when they hit armor, some don't. But we'll save that for later. Let's assume that armor's DT reduces damage by reducing velocity. What does that mean to slow moving bullets, like pistol rounds or buckshot? What does that mean to fast moving rounds like rifle and machinegun rounds?

With sufficient armor, slower moving bullets won't penetrate.

Good job, recruit. Let's move on a bit. So far we've discussed how your helmet will help keep your brains on the inside of your cranial cavities by reducing the velocity of bullets before they hit you. What other things are going to do the same thing? What other factors will help reduce the velocity of the bullet before it strikes you?

Correct, Recruit. Keep 'em coming. There's more.

Specify. Does the recruit mean ammo subtypes, ie: AP, FMJ, JHP, or ammo calibers, ie: .22, .50, 9mm?

How about taking into account the fact that most wastelanders are not well trained soldiers, but mere drug using, alcohol chugging raider inbreeds? Their low intelligence and perception, coupled with the inability to repair anything more than a bent cigarette is a huge factor out there. Now you have math on hit percentages at set ranges. Odds are, if your a good shot with a well maintained gun, yoy can make some Pork n Beans on the fire whie de-limbing them from 100+ yards.

We're talking Damage Threshold, recruit. Chow hall's immediately after this period of instruction.

There's more ways bullet velocity can be reduced. Let's hear some more answers.

Good training and Esprit D'Corps, recruit. I'll make a lean, mean fightling wasteland machine out of you yet. OORAH!
