Guns: the opinion of people who don't know about guns

Post » Tue Feb 02, 2016 4:49 pm

I haven't played 4. But in a number of threads here I've read people being upset about a lack of real life guns and guns not working like they do in real life relating to reloading and stuff in posts made by people who know about guns.

Now I don't know much about guns. If you showed me one I could probably tell you which end the bullets shoot out of and that would be pretty much it. I probably wouldn't be able to identify a specific model of gun or what country it was made in or anything else about it.

So I was wondering what do people who don't know much about guns who have played 4 think of the guns in 4?

The guns are great; they're fine!

People who have spent many hours in The Zone playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (like me) know good guns...

The physics is a bit more accurate in the Chernobyl simulation. There's quite a realistic arc to the trajectory, and you must aim high etc...

But I think Beth has done a great job with all the weapons in FO4.

I enjoy modding them all in great detail - and customizing the armor too.

The assault rifle is nice. There is nothing even close to a G36 though. ;)

I'll have you know that I have a vast wealth of knowledge concerning guns based on incredibly narrow experience with some pistols, shotguns and hunting rifles..

Nah seriously though, I know enough about guns for some fun with firing practice, cleaning and hunting, but that's about it. I thought the guns were fine considering it's a video game. You won't notice much difference between the weapons in Fallout 4 and a game like Far Cry (well I'd say Farcry is a bit better, but meh). I have a buddy that's in the SWAT and has had the pleasure of firing anything from an UMP-45 to a .50cal and he didn't complain.

I really like the Hunting Rifle.

Got a mod (hopefully soon for consoles) that expands on Pipe Weapons too. Gave me a Pipe Revolver that fires Shotgun Shells. I dig it.

My thoughts:

Wish the Combat Rifle and Combat Shotgun didn't look so similar. The Assault Rifle is fine, although it does seem like Machine Gun would have been a better name for it.

Weapon modding is great. I can craft a weapon into something that suits my needs perfectly, and I can upgrade it so that I can keep using it for the entire game. Legendary drops are fun, too. Some of them are underwhelming and some of them are overwhelming, but I don't think the point was ever to make each effect balanced against another - sometimes you luck out, and sometimes you luck in.

The overall weapon variety is good. It's not toootally amazeballs, but the fact that the progression is in weapon mods and not new weapons means there's a much higher variety of weapons I can use in the endgame, instead of just finding the Badass Rifle and calling it a day.

I also get the feeling that automatic weapons are underrated. They've got lower damage than their immediate semi-auto counterparts, but there are a ton of legendary effects that shred with a better rate of fire, and you're not going to have a bad time in this game focusing on automatic weapons. I dunno, I think people just see the damage difference (which isn't even that huge if your damage perks are even) and get disappointed.

That's a great point; Combat Shotgun and Combat Rifle look nearly identical

Nice point. I got the Spray n' Pray from Cricket when I was specializing in semi-autos just for messing around since I had so much ammo for it and.. damn. That thing shreds everything and the AOE is crazy in closed in areas.

as somebody with no clue about real guns, i think the classic (bullet based) firearms play nice.

except maybe that i find it somewhat strange that a maxed out rifle got only about twice the power of a maxed 10mm or stg, is it really like that?

and i can't for the life of me seem to figure out what's the actual difference between a "rifle" and a "shotgun", letting aside shotguns appear to be about as accurate and quick as throwing a fridge.

the energy weapons though strike me a bit odd, esp. the laser gun: shouldn't a laser be, like, a focused beam? how come then that whenever i fire one, i can't see much more than screen filling red flashes anymore? makes them totally unusable (because unaimable) for me without vats from the 2nd shot on - and why does a light emitting device's focus sway like drunk and it's recoil having it jump all over the screen after every shot? and don't even start me about plasma guns :-)

I'm doing a full auto playthrough. the damage scales quite a bit as you add Commando, and although you will always use a lot of ammo, it's a perfectly viable way to play. The assault rifle is especially good, with appropriate mods, I can put quite a few bullets into a small area, like say, a head. ;)

I know a few people seem to annoyed about the hunting rifle being left handed model, combat guns looking similar and the 44. pistol not being double action (sort annoyed about that too, hell it could have been an gun mod) but for the most part these don't brother me and my bigger issue is with the lack of guns.

I get Beth was trying out an new crafting system and all so probably wanted to limit the amount of guns but they could have added an couple more models and actually included an proper assault rifle (one was cut and like some pointed out the in-game one is more like an machine gun) or an pump action shotgun :gun:

Hopefully though the DLC's will fix this issue... regardless of how they turn out hopefully they should include some more weapons and perhaps armour...

Wish that was the case as well. At least they moved the combat shotgun's cartridge to the right part of the gun unlike Fallout 3.

Guns are great. For me there are even too much guns there. And the story is happening in some kind of alternative reality( history) so I don`t think that guns there have to look similar to the real ones.

Shotguns use shells that fire clusters of BBs (shot) which spread out in a cloud in front of the weapon. The inside of the barrel is smooth. (generally)

Rifles fire bullets (solid single projectiles) which fly out in a more or less straight line. The inside of the barrel is carved with a spiral pattern (rifling) which causes the bullet to spin thereby giving greater aerodynamics and control to the projectile causing it to go straighter and farther.

Shotguns are much stronger at close range than they are at farther ranges because of this. The shot from the gun loses its momentum and spreads out more the farther away you are from the business end of the shotgun.

Fallout 4 gun play is best gun play I ever played on any video game.

They are far from being realistic... but they are just too much fun.

I just got Never Ending Double Barrel Shotgun.. and this thing can probably have me reach 500 play time hours in FO4.

It`s unreal... but it`s super fun.

aah, i see, thx for clearing that up.

so a shotgun's a Schrotflinte - should've just checked a bloody dictionary instead of just thinking of a "gun that shoots" :-)

I will pipe in even though I know some stuff about guns. A lot of the stuff is down to video game mechanics so I wont talk about the receiver stuff which is very video gamey and I am fine with that. I just wish the assault rifle had a different name like "light machine gun", because that is what it looks like. And with the combat rifle firing a pistol or smg round and being called a rifle, at least give it a rifle round.

But I also understand that the combat rifle and assault rifle had to be different so a rifle fires a pistol round and a light machine gun masquerades as a assault rifle.

The biggest complaints about guns are automatics and revolvers. The revolvers are just crap, and the automatics are lacking. If the first DLCoffers an automatic riffle like the aassault riffle or Chinese assault riffle from FO3 a lot of the complaints would stop

The guns are plenty good enough for an RPG game, in both realism, and fantasy. The ones that are more real world handle close enough to realistic for this type of game, and the make shift ones are interesting. Many of the make shift ones have a very Steampunk look, and can be quite funny, like the Junk Gun, that can svck up any junk you loot, and propel it as a projectile.

Don't pay attention to the obsessive gun nuts. Why they even bother straying beyond tactical warfare games that only have real world weapons is kind of hypocritical anyway. They're usually the kind that don't have much of an imagination when it comes to what kind of fun stuff to put in fictional games. Games like this are as much about just having fun, as they are about challenge.

I do have one question though for gun nuts and old school fans, how many of the guns in the original Fallouts were based off of real world models? It seems like most of their gun selection comes from the kind of guns you'd see in movies or TV, when it's not original designs.

I wasn't so fond of the weapon sounds and the bullet impact and wheezing sounds when they nearly miss you, I searched the nexus for it and there was actually a mod which made them less hollywood more real. All good now :)

I don't like the combat weapons cause they look too similar too each other, there are no proper assault rifles and there is not generally enough base weapons in the game. Especially coming from a modded New Vegas :)

You know that "fun" is very subjective right ? And how do you know whether they are "imaginitive" or not ? Just based on their preferences ?

I like realistic weaponary in general more than most fantasy designs because they often apear more elegant and stylish to me.

Magnum, Mauser, DEagle, Colt .45, M9 Beretta, Casull Revolver, Browning HP, P220 Sig Sauer, MP5, MP38, Walther MPL, Uzi, Scorpion, Grease Gun, Tommy Gun, H&K P90, FN FAL, G11 (was a prototype IRL), M16A1, AK-47, M1 Garand, Enfield XL70E3, M14, AUG, Ruger AC556, M79 Grenade Launcher, H&K CAWS, Pancor Jackhammer, Neostead Combat SG, Beretta 470 Silverhawk, M60, Browning M2, Bren Gun, Lewis MK, M249 SAW.. Possibly some more.

So the originals had at least 35 real world guns (just guns).

Casull Revolver. LOL, the 454 should definitely be in the game. Only the Stalker Big Ben 9x39 is in the same class.

I haven't played STALKER unfortunately, is the game good?

Looking at the model of the Big Ben, it looks like a Desert Eagle though.
