Hair.

I think it's strange when people blame everything on it not being finished yet. They've been working on it for years, they're showing the game now. Do people really expect them to make mediocre looking hair (or whatever else people think doesn't look nice yet) and stick with it, show it off to the fans at last, but then suddenly make huge improvements to it in the last months before release?

Hair is not the easiest thing to program in. I'm thinking that Skyrim will have better and more hair options then Oblivion although Oblivion Hairstyles were actually pretty good.

Agreed - what bothered me about the hair was that other textures looked very good - the tree bark was stunning - clothing and skin textures looked fine - and then there is this plastic lump for hair - it looked out of place with the level of detail elsewhere

The last time this topic came up - about 2 or 3 weeks ago one of the developers dropped by to say that hair was very difficult - which didn't encourage me at all.

I personally find it jarring to see non-alpha hair - if Ren could do such great hair back in Morrowind days why can't dev's get it right now?

I'm not after Square Enix hair - that never appeals - but seeing as I spend hours of game time in the character creation screens I am hoping that the choices will be better than brown plastic look and blonde plastic look

It is certainly possible the hair is still placeholder, sure. Comparing the fidelity of the hair to say the body and skin of the character there is a rather obvious change in quality, so in fact I am hoping this is actually the case.

Yeah, they've been working on this for about 6 times the amount of time that is left before it is released. You'd think that they'd get the graphics, models, textures and stuff in the beginning right? And later on start working on the content and quests. This game is not going to improve much graphic, animation and model wise when it is released. People seem to think that it is smarter to first give characters a lot of different place-holder hair, and almost at the end remove it all and give them some new, better ones. That doesn't make sense.

I'm just saying that you shouldn't expect some really awesome hair when it comes out.
(And also, the hair doesn't look good at all. It looks like a plastic wig. I can't do better myself, but I'd expect a team of proffesionals can.)

(Plus, pessimists can hardly ever be dissapointed.. )

EDIT: The hair is about the only thing I'm not really impressed about, though.

Just because they're showing the game now doesn't mean everything is in final form and nothing is going to be tweaked/changed.

Actually I find it strange that everyone decided to just say "the game isn't done yet, that's why it looks bad" instead of saying "What? The game looks amazing". They do that for the screens even though they are console screens aren't really meant to be seen on the PC so they can see the flaws they wouldn't normally see when playing it on a TV. Then they say the animations are terrible but because it's in alpha, when in reality, the animations are top notch and it just seems some people don't have an eye for animations quality now or in the past, because they aren't looking close enough.

I like what I have seen in the screenshots and such, and I doubt they will be changing much in this area any more. Of course they can make minor changes to a lot of things, still, though Povuholo is probably right saying that the game is pretty much finished. I'll let them surprise me.

I wouldn't say it looks good. Marginally better than OB? Yeah, I suppose.

Eh. Seems alot better than Oblivion's hair. (OB hair makes me want to immediately run to the Nexus to grab a hair mod. The hair on that barmaid makes me want to see what other options there are, because they might actually be usable. :D )

Alot of this stuff will get ironed out. That being said hair, especially in a game like this with as much variety as these games tend to have and make it work with everything is particularly difficult.

Hardly an inspiring comment

I suspect this is a leave it to the modders to fix issue - which is fine for those with PC's but for those who want to play on a console it's not so encouraging

Posts like the OP are useful as they draw attention to devs like Vsions that a feature of the world that is pervasive and hard to ignore if it looks out of place with the rest of the excellent textures that have been displayed so far.

I'll ask again but people will still do it, don't say something was bad in the past when in reality, it was great for it's time. Yeah, the hair in Oblivion looks like *bleep* compared to Square Enix's hair (every games hair looks like *bleep* in comparison) and to some other games that have come out in the last few years but you can't compare it to now, it doesn't work like that. Also, I've seen the hair in Skyrim and it looks great. If you plug your PC into your TV and then look at the screens, the little flaws you find when you are staring at them disappear. The reason for that? Because they are 360 screens and they are meant to be seen on the TV. The PC version is supposed to look good on the PC, not the console version and there is no premise to think so.

So in short, don't worry about hair, it will be great.

We should totaly have square enix hair!
Loljkingthatsimposable

But still, I hope there's alot more choices... Honestly the horrible hair + horrible face (Mostly the horrible hair) in oblivion was what forced me to use a beast character instead.
 It's okay tes, I still love you though :tes:

I think it should be a requirement to have tried to create hair in 3D space, before bashing it. Just so you know it's not as quick a fix as it may seem.

It seems like it's going to be easy, and 9 hours later, you realize you could have made 11 other bald characters. I do have great props to Squaresoft-Enix for being able to make believable hair, but it wouldn't surprise me if they literally had a sizable team of people dedicated just to getting the hair right.

Personally, the Hair, quality wise, looks quite a bit better than Oblivion or Fallout3-NV, but that is polishing a turd. If nothing else though, the styles seem to be a bit better. Both the women in the screen have hairstyles we didn't even see in Fallout 3-NV.

Looks fine to me.

There just better be plenty(I mean alot) of hairdos and we should be able to change them in mid game at a barber or if we have a high enough 2handed skill to work on our hair ourselves.

Except at the time, the hair was good and the faces were better than a lot of games (Yeah, I know right?)

I'll let you have that one. imo the character faces and hair did look pretty hot at the time.. of course on the PC about 2 people with their 7800s could run it at max at the time. but yeah even on my medium settings of the day I was like: yeah...check me out! as I strutted across Cyrodill..

I
1. I hope they don't leave it to the modders. As Todd has said before: "90% of our gamers are on xbox 360", or something along those lines. It would be very saddening if the pc got even more advantages over console gamers... Unless of course, if they decide to maybe use a modding system for consoles such as like the wii's ssbb, as you can possibly mod that game on console, in a simplified customizationative way. (Although this was only made possible by homebrew, but still.)

2. I hope the devs see how much we care about customization, as customization has always been a big thing in the elder scrolls games.

Like I said earlier, no one does hair and human faces like Square Enix. It's their Crystal Engine.

Probably won't be seeing hairstyles like ones that go below shoulder length as usual. For some reason western developers just don't want to bother with fixing clipping issues and the likes.

I saw some tech demo from nVidia showing off realistic hair that wasn't just a complex model with textures slapped on. It interacted realisticly with wind and gravity. Can't wait for this to become standards, but that's probably still years off from being practical in games.
