It must be technically possible, so I ask, http://finalfantasy13ultima.com/wallpapers/final-fantasy-13-wallpaper-fang-001-1280.jpg

an astronaut and a brain surgeon cannot do the same thing

also it is possible it is just not at all optimized for gaming

Like I said earlier, no one does hair and human faces like Square Enix. It's their Crystal Engine.

Yea, the Crystal Engine can't do half of the stuff the Creation Engine can.

The old lady is wearing a hat. The hairs we've actually seen look great to me. I don't care about hair physics etc.; it's a waste of cycles on my middling PC compared to, say, a good distant view, which Bethesda definitely has covered. So, I'm happy!

Square Enix and other Japanese devs usually get away with more character detail by having less detailed environments. You'll notice a lot of the time in Japanese RPGs you're pretty much just walking on huge flat, empty surfaces.

Exactly. Fang has nice hair no doubt, but the linear levels in FFXIII are uninspiring.

Thanks for responses guys, If it has to be a trade-off between pretty hair, which I like, and a more richly detailed environment, which I also like, I will take the detailed environment. But sometimes, I want it all...lol.

Vsions - Character Artist - said:

Hardly an inspiring comment

I suspect this is a leave it to the modders to fix issue - which is fine for those with PC's but for those who want to play on a console it's not so encouraging

Posts like the OP are useful as they draw attention to devs like Vsions that a feature of the world that is pervasive and hard to ignore if it looks out of place with the rest of the excellent textures that have been displayed so far.

my comment doent mean hairs will look bad so dont sweat it. Dont worry too much about it, they already look significnatly better. I was simply pointing out that it is a very technically and artistically difficult thing to pull off in real time along side everything else we are doing so it takes time to polish up. Anyway, I am not the one doing the hairs but I can defintiely tell you that the individuals involved are VERY talented and you guys wont be dissapointed. Have a little faith my friends, fat lady has not sung yet!

Maybe this is off topic but do you guys think that hair will have physics in Skyrim? As much as Two Worlds 2 svcked, I liked how your characters hair actually moved around and it wasnt glued to your dome. Hell, even Fable 1 had hair physics.

Funny thing, there were early games on the Xbox 360 and even on the old xbox that had really impressive hair. DOA 3 on the old xbox had, in cut scenes, very impressive hair realization (also some nudity with a teen rating, but that is another matter for another thread). Ninety Nine Nights was a fairly early 360 release, and the hair in that game looked and moved fairly impressively, much better than in later games like Fable II and Oblivion. Maybe "good hair" drains too much of the games resources if they are more expansive than the relatively short N3 and DOA 3? I haven't the answers for this one. I hope the hair in Skyrim is beautiful. I will be okay if it is at least as good and perhaps slightly better than it was in Oblivion, with equal or greater variety in length and styles. Hopefully greater. I'd love it if long hair could actually be long. . . and if the character didn't become bald headed when standing under waterfalls or wearing crowns.

Fable I had much better hair physics than II or III. Odd how a lot of games always seem to give up ground in certain areas in their future installments even as they make improvements in other areas.

Everything about Fable 1 was better than the sequels (besides graphics of course) but this is a discussion for another day.

Hair is really hard to do.

So it would seem, but it's certainly possible to do it better than the images we've seen of Skyrim would lead us to believe.

I don't really expect to see hair physics in Skyrim, but I don't think higher quality models for hair would be too much to ask for, as it stands, I fear character models will end up looking great except when you see their hair, which will only serve to remind you of the fact that these are still only video game characters you're looking at, no matter how good their faces and bodies look.

And some might say "The game isn't finished yet." and that's true, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it will look better when it's finished, I don't recall Oblivion looking significantly better on release than earlier screenshots and gameplay footage led us to believe, if anything, it looked like the inverse was true, so why should we assume that Skyrim will look much better upon release than what we've seen of it. Now, I wouldn't say it's impossible for the graphics to improve before release, but we can't know, at this time, how they'll change, if at all, before the game is finished, we can only judge based on what we've been seen so far, and while I don't have too many major complaints with that, there are a few aspects of the graphics that we've seen which haven't impressed me much, hair being one of them.

+1

If I could give you a cookie you would be most deserving

6 months is a long time.

Two words. Pre alpha.

no NO! go sit in the corner!

Aside from you people not even knowing what "pre alpha" means nor what the term applies to in relevance to game design progress, the fact that it's "pre alpha" does not instantly mean every aspect you don't like is going to be totally different when the game comes out. What you are seeing there is probably final.

Making hair is hard. "But wait hypno, how come hair works so well in most other games" Well in most other games hair is built onto the model, each character model will have it's own unique hair and it will be animated accordingly. In TES games, you can pick any haistyle, and the hair will even change size depending on the dimensions of your head. This makes it really hard to animate hair realistically, and avoid clipping issues with armor, clothing, and even the player's skin. Lest we forget that I think you can change the size of your body dimensions too, this will make it even harder to model hair realistically.

The shot here looks fine.

It's realistic, there's no noticeable clipping issues. While the textures could use a bit of work, they look fine off hand.

I wouldn't say it looks good. Marginally better than OB? Yeah, I suppose.

I'm thinking in terms of texture and stuff. In OB all the hair looked as if it had a sheen of grease all over it giving it unnatural shine all the time. The hair in the picture here looks a lot more natural, plus the shape and style of the hair looks a lot better.

Oh wow, left for sleep and a million comments to go through. :teehee:

Dont worry too much about it, they already look significnatly better.

Great! Really looking forward to seeing more shots. Hopefully there will be more races and styles for me to be in awe over.

Also, I've never said anything about physics in hair. I understand how hard it is to do, and how taxing it is on even the better computers. Imo, we wont be seeing that for a good few years. In TES standard games, anyhow.

I also don't believe "it's pre-alpha" is any kind of response. I'm sorry, but that is no justification to anything. "pre-alpha" doesn't mean "Everything will be compeltely changed and made better. We will scrap all the hard work already put in". Threads like these exist so the devs can have our opinions. I'm not trolling or flaming, just constructive criticism.
