you're right. source is old. I have gmod and the graphics are very outdated
That's because that's an old version of source. If you played Left 4 Dead 2 or seen Portal 2 the graphics are actually quite nice.
graphics might be nice but they are not at the level of most games nowadays, source is getting old and i dont think the updates they make will solve the problem, sooner or later they will need a new engine
source lacks stuff like real time illumination and lot of techniques that are now standard in most games, the hammer editor is also a pain in the ass to work it, mainly to compile a map and all the illumination is pre-built into the map, no things like TOD and so on
the only good thing with source is the physics system but i guess valve can do a even greater job with the current technology
Except the good thing about source is that it keeps decent graphics while it can run on pretty much any PC. It's definitely a good game engine. Secondly - Not everything's about graphics. I honestly don't care if the graphics aren't truly amazing, as long as the game's good. People I know just tell me I like Crysis due to the graphics, that's obviously not the case. I still very much enjoy the game. Things like Half-Life 2 still look good enough to me and I still play it, because it's quite an amazing game. Although the source engine is becoming dated, it's still acceptable, and can do some amazing things.
And to this topic, I'm quite sure it'll be Half-Life 2: Episode 3 and not Half-Life 3, and that it'll use the newest Source engine.
