Half-Life 2 - Extreme Graphical Glitch

Post » Fri Jun 18, 2010 8:52 pm

I've been trying to find a fix for 2 days now, and nothing. I bought the Valve Complete Pack the other day and decided to complete all the content included in it by release dates, for the first time on my life (Excluding Portal). I finally got to Half-Life 2. I play it for 30 minutes, and suddenly BOOM. The screen goes black. I move around and hear my footsteps. I also hear people talking to me and so on and so forth. It's just the graphics that glitch out. Basically, after 10-30 minutes of playing Half-Life 2, the games graphics break. I can fix that by either quiting the game and starting it up again, or pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del and then coming back to it, but honestly, I don't feel like getting immersed into a game and after 30 minutes being made to restart/reopen it. I also have problems with texture tearing (Yes, v-sync is on), but they only tear sideways or horizontally.

I have uninstalled and installed the latest drivers for my graphics card. I have reinstalled Half-Life 2 three times. Nothing. Any help, please?

These are my specs (Yeah, my PC is really old, I know):

Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS 512
Intel Pentium 4, 3.6 GHz (Not sure about the amount of GHz, but something around that number)
1GB RAM
Windows XP 32-Bit

By the way, Portal and all of the other games before Half-Life 2 worked perfectly.

I had a similar issue when they released HL2 Episode 1 or 2 I believe where I couldn't advance due to the screen going completely black. Installing the new drivers for my GC at the time fixed it, but I doubt they would fix your problem. What you may need to do is go into the game and play around with the lighting and see if that helps to fix it. Don't have the settings on hand, but I believe this is what I tweaked in order to bypass the problem in HL2 episode one.

I have played with the video options, but unsuccessfully. I guess I will try that again.

have you updated your video drivers recently?

if the information you gave was accurate this link is where your most up to date drivers are
http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/winxp-270.61-whql-driver-uk.html

just be sure to uninstall your old drivers before installing the new drivers
