No Half Life At E3

Post » Thu Jun 10, 2010 2:16 am

Beh...Valve continues to dissapoint. If they take too long people will simply lose interest in the Half Life series altogether.

I don't think so. It all depends on how much people loved the game. Star Craft II is a great example. Nothing was done for 10 years and look at it now? Same for Diablo II.

Same for Oblivon. People were shocked, upset at Todd and Bethesda at E3 where there was NOT EVEN ONE MENTION of Oblivion. Look how successfull Oblivon turned out to be.
You don't need E3 to make people interested. At most 50 000 or so people attend the event? So for the rest of the millions nobody will be we bother with E3.

Millions follow/hear about E3 announcements though. 50,000 may only be in attendance, but if they announced it there, it would spread like wild fire.

It spreads like wildfire either way. It's called the internet.

Maybe they'll follow Blizzard's example and do a Valvecon.

With fully functional portals!

See, the problem with E3 is that there's 354,154,845,115,448,154,125 (rough estimate) things going on at the show. People showcasing new games, old games, in-development games, new consoles, peripherals, and anything else under the sun. It doesn't matter how many people are paying attention around E3 because there's so much other stuff that it is really hard to just blow people far enough away that you become the story. That's why you announce it at some other time, so instead of being a little footnote at the end of a 3 page E3 rap up, you're an entire story in and of yourself.

Various games never appeared at E3, yet some of them are better then anything that the E3 itself and the companies in it show us, Valve doesnt need to appear in there to win my interest, Portal 2 was enough,

Honestly, I would have been more surprised if they did say they were working on a new Half-Life installment.

I think at this point they're best known for NOT developing the critically acclaimed Half-Life series.

Exactly. Most of their hype is surrounding the games they AREN'T developing rather than those that they ARE. <_<

If you think they aren't working on Episode 3 in one form or another, then I don't know what to tell you. Of course they are. When it's closer to done, they will say when it is coming out.

With the prices a company has to pay to be at these events especially something as big as E3, I can see why they don't want to go. Save about $10 000 and not bother. You have to pay for space, then pay to get the stuff there, then pay for someone to be there and talk about it, pay for thier hotel meals etc etc. Maybe even more than $10 000. I hate to see how much it will cost Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo. I believe Nintendo has a huge floor space so it much cost them alot of money. I am shure it will cost them close to a $100 000 if not more.

Fully understandable whey they will not show up.

Considering the fact that they're multi million/billion dollar companies, I really don't think the cost is an issue to them.

I can't believe you took the time to type that out. :P

They might give us a release date, but then they'll most likely delay it ten flippin times. :P

I hope you're right. The first Half-Life was revolutionary in its day and HL 2 surpassed it, of course. It's beginning to seem that Valve doesn't care if the series is wrapped up or not.

Half-Life was one of the first shooters to have a plot; and with the character of Alyx, you had a female NPC who wasn't some bimbo stereotype.

Valve went hipster.

Gabben: UGH, making games and showing our progress? Pfft I'm more into a little thing called proslackination. It's my professional job to do nothing. *goes back to eating pies* You other developers can keep making games, and you'll get all the attention you want.

fixed that for you

I was thinking about this the other day. Valve hasn't made a game in god knows how long. And when I say they haven't made a game I mean a real game. L4D and L4D 2 don't honestly count per se at least IMO. What Valve has evolved into; or de-evolved into rather is more of a distributor of other's games. They don't make them anymore. I honestly have stopped anticipating Valve's next masterpiece because frankly, after HL2 there haven't been any; I only got the first HL2 DLC when it came out because I had lost interest in them.

Besides, who needs Valve and another HL when you have BethOb with FO and Elder Scrolls?

1.Episode 1 and 2 arent DLC, You can play Episode 1 without the vanilla game
2. Some Valve fans might dont like Fallout or TES, or might dont like RPG at all, and just want another Half Life more rather then just Another Portal, LFD, TF,CS or another game

Why do you not consider L4D 1 and 2 real games? They also just released the highly acclaimed Portal 2, surely you can't have missed the marketing and hype for that. They also released the side project Alien Swarm last year. Right now they are focused on DOTA2 which should be out this year.

And that's not counting the constant additions to Team Fortress 2.

Eh. It's Valve. They live by the "It's ready when it's ready" mentality. While I think it is a bit ridiculous that It has been this long, seeing as how they broke the series up into sections in order to "save time on releases", I am used to it from the guys. They are always working on something. It's not like they are sitting on their butts year after year.
I would really like to see something Half-Life related soon though. It has been a long time.

All of those are other peoples games/ideas originating independently from Valve HQ. Sure they're high quality, but I want to see a VALVE original/own series. Not just find a super high quality mod and turn it into a full game (nothing wrong with this).

It kind of feels like a really good book that I started like 14 years ago, and still haven't finished.

I've loved half-life since the first game launched.

I just really want the next installment.

At the very least, give me episode three.
