HALT! You Corin, have been found guilty of Criminal Conspira

Post » Tue Dec 06, 2011 8:28 am

Wandering the streets of Daggerfall I am on my knight character, trying to buy better equipment and perhaps a cloak to keep him warm in the winter months, when suddenly...

"HALT!" shout the guards, running to me. What have I done wrong?

"You have been found guilty of criminal conspiracy. How do you plead?"

"Your honor, I Corin have just recently arrived to this wonderful land of Daggerfall. One day ago, I lie not! So how can thy be conspirating, against a government that my master, the Emperor himself, sent me to aid, within one day! My ask nay not be of ill deed, and all I have done is kill a few rats, skeleton, and bandits. I say nay, I am not guilty!"

"You are hereby found, not guilty then Corin. Carry out your life."

So alright. THats cool! The game has someone out to get my knight... but less then ten seconds later.

"HALT!"

"Oh what now!"

"You Corin, have been found guilty of criminal conspiracy. How plead you?"

"WHAT THE HELL! What evidence do you even have, and where the hell is this coming from!"

"He's guilty! Throw him in the cell to rot for thirty days."

"I DIDNT DO ANYTHING."

*slammer... thirty days later*

"Alright Corin, you are free to leave. However, I dont think you will want to during the night hours, with the ghost of king Lysandus, ehehe.. but, not your choice. OUT DOG!"

"You filthy corrupted-"

*tossed outside Daggerfall city... with all the ghost screaming for his blood.. escapes, and travels to the east, to the great mountains where he will take up a new name for the time.*

So, can anyone tell me. Is this a bug, or is there some ill deed at work against Corin?

It's a bug. I don't know what causes it. It might be coincidence, but the times I've noticed it is when I've gone through character creation, then decide to restart and do a different character a couple times before going to Privateer's Hold.

its a bug, i have experienced it too once, your best bet is to either edit your savegame with an editor or start anew, since it will never end.

Mannimarco: Mr. Judge, I believe recently a knight sent by the empire to spy on Daggerfall has been involved in a criminal conspiracy. Here's some evidence.

*hands judge a bag of gold*

Judge: This is more then enough evidence, but I shall expect another bag of "evidence" every week.

Mannimarco: Of course, all I ask is that this foul brigand faces justice. Fare thee well.

Judge: The law shall see that he is reabilitated in a correctional facility for the rest of his life. Farewell, old friend.

*they part ways*

Ah yes. It happened to me a few times as well. :)

The latest I can remember was when I decided to rob one of the Palaces for fun and wealth. I steal the crates and, on my way out, guards jumped on me and I didn't escape them.
Then they accused me of Criminal Conspiracy. Thanks to the Thieves Guild, I didn't get a prison sentence for this one. (I can imagine the Thieves Guild breaking the wheels on the judge's wagon)

That story of yours is great. :)
If I may ask, what crime were you commiting? Sleeping on the streets? Bashing random doors?
Accidently clicking "Steal" instead of Buy?

If killing imps, rats, bats, and the human enemies in Privateers Hold, then buying a room for thirty days, and getting some armor is a crime, there you have it. Seriously, walked out.

"HALT!'

"HALT!"

"HALT!"

"HALT!"

"Woo.. ok, maybe there's a reason. I could of accidentally stolen something."

"YOU ARE CONSPIRING!"

Read the story above.

Perhaps you rested too long in the inn so that it kicked you out, and then rested again and thus incurring vagrancy charges.
Also,

HALT! Your shirt's on backwards.
HALT! Does this armor make my butt look big?
HALT! I heard a rumor you like kittens.
HALT! I don't like the way you walk!
HALT! Welcome to Daggerfall
HALT! That what I say to stop criminals, right?
HALT! Someone told me you picked up a gold piece someone dropped on the ground. OFF TO JAIL!

If the charge is always "Criminal Conspiracy", you may want to look into this:

Actually, if you've been arrested by the guards several times, there's a chance of your legal reputation ("in the eyes of the law of _____") breaking and going to a ridiculous number like -791463. In which case, not only will everyone hate you, but it'll take an eternity for that reputation to break even at 0 again.

Coincidentally I made a http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=922240&hl= about this some time ago. Turns out our buddy Ferital made a program that can let you negate this. His program, Dagrep can be downloaded http://www.uesp.net/w/images/Dagrep.zip.

NOTE: This is only in the event your reputation is indeed broken and has plummeted to some ridiculous number. If it's something like -4, it'd be more fun to wait it out and do quests to redeem yourself. :)

Congratulations on starting what I believe to be the fourth or fifth thread that I've posted this generic response in. :hehe:

yeah, i went on a massacre and killed some civillians to get into the dark brotherhood. i served my sentence in the random town i went to, but every time i get out of jail they want to arrest me again for the same charges, and if i go to the city daggerfall, i'm still arrested. i was stupid and don't have a save before i went on my little slaughter, and i'm seriously considering quitting daggerfall over this. every time i go to daggerfall the city i get banished, which makes no sense because i did no crimes there, and my rep is only scoundrel.

would doing reputation quests help or would that make no difference? because i was enjoying the game but this is extremely frustrating

It is a perk!

That is what makes Daggerfall so great! In a medieval setting, corruption is rampant! Maybe they thought you looked suspicious (what with just having finished a dungeon crawl the first time and having left a court hearing for a criminal charge the second!). Maybe you looked like a passable mark for a wealthy man beyond reproach of the law. They can't arrest the real criminal, so this poor bugger will do! Or maybe they just wanted to shake you down. You paid up, right? No? Then to jail with you!

Life is arbitrary, and Daggerfall mimics life!

a perk? you're telling me immediately being arrested in every single damn city in Daggerfall is a perk? also I raised my rep from scoundrel to respected...the guards still [censored] arrest every time they see me.

I really want to enjoy this game and I did for the most part, but the bugs in this game ruin it, for me at least.

Have you ever read any articles about life as an ex-convict? They have served their time, but they still can't get a fair shake. The system goes out of its way to keep them down. Daggerfall works in the same, uncompromising way.

You went on a killing spree and you think the citizens of that good country are going to just forget that?

Time to do what you should have done after that killing spree: move out of Daggerfall and start a new life somewhere else.

Choices have serious consequences in Daggerfall. Get used to it.

Oh my god man, this is a game not real life stop this role playing crap. it's a bug, not an intended game feauture. I only went on a murdering spree after I realized I was being arrested everywhere for killing 3 civillians. oh, I guess by your logic I should be forever hunted down by guards in Daggerfall no matter what my rep is because I did something that's required to join a guild, right?

anyway, someone else got any advice on fixing this bug? and if it's not a bug can someone tell me why I'm still being arrested when my reputation says the law views me as respectable?

If that is your attitude about it, perhaps Daggerfall isn't a good fit for you. Nothing wrong with that, not all games are for all players.

My solution to bugs like this is incremental savegames. If I got trapped by something like that I'd just make a new character.

yeah, I wasn't expecting anything like this to happen, so I stupidly overwrote my previous saves :(

I REALLY don't want to start over though, I've invested a fair amount of time into my character...is there no way to fix this?
