Hand - crafted dungeons

Does this mean enemies in them will be randomly generated (oblivion) or hand placed?

They stated that the level of the creatures in the dungeons will be fixed as you enter there the first time. This implies spawn points.

I believe in Oblivion, enemies (or enemy types) were placed by hand, but with difficulty and gear scaled to the player's level. So it will probably be done in a similar way in Skyrim, considering there is level scaling in dungeons there as well. Correct me if this is wrong though. :)

Hand-placed spawn points with leveled spawn lists. Is that close enough?

would there still be leveled lists considering dungeons lock at a specific level once visited?

Sure. There has to be a list to pick from for when you first enter the dungeon, doesn't there?

I think I remember something about there being a possibility at higher level for multiple spawns at places that are locked at a lower level. I assume you could find 2 level 20 bandits sometimes at a spawn point instead of 1 if you're level 40.

As long as they aren't decked out in high level gear thats fine by me. 2 level 20s in Steel, fine. 2 level 20s in whatever I'm wearing? wtf?

Hand crafted dungeons likely just means the dungeon environments are hand crafted, as in, dungeon designers create them by hand, as opposed to having them be randomly generated, which is a good thing I'd say. Most likely, there will be spawn points for enemies, though one kind of enemy spawns is likely somewhat random, probably based on a leveled list, that's how monster spawns tended to work in past games. You'd probably still encounter specific types of monsters in specific dungeons, of course, for example, in one dungeon, you might encounter undead, but they could be zombies, skeletons or something else.

A "hand-crafted" dungeon is a dungeon that is premade by the devs, it's not created by a random generator program the first time (or each time/logon) you enter. Daggerfall had random dungeons (in addition to handcrafted ones), and Diablo 2 has a hybrid system where each login randomly chooses between X number of handcrafted areas. Neither Morrowind nor Oblivion had random dungeons, nor will Skyrim likely have them either.

When it comes to spawns however, that's a specific feature within a dungeon. Both loot and mobs can either be specifically placed or randomly generated by the use of loot tables and spawnpoints, respectively. But even then, you need to place those spawnpoints and containers by hand and setup the spawn/loot tables that the objects use to determine what's generated.

You know what's funny? One of the largest misconceptions on these forums is that Oblivion had randomly-generated dungeons. If only there could be a more false statement...

They've hand-crafted all of their dungeons since Morrowind and strongly imply they have continued to do so with Skyrim.

the only difference now is that instead of one guy making them all there are 8 so there will be far more diversity

They also cut the number of dungeons down by at least 80, meaning they can focus more on the smaller amount. I think Skyrim will have the best dungeons of any Bethesda game, yet.
