Hand to Hand axed?

Post » Thu Aug 11, 2011 2:04 pm

So Ive been away for a few weeks, and I noticed a recent interview that was summarized with the developers talking about how they axed several skills. One of them being Hand to Hand. Obviously it has been underpowered and borderline ineffective since Morrowind, but I REALLY like having the option of focusing on a hand to hand skill.

I also read that while it wasn't a skill, there are perks geared towards fist-fighting charactors. Can anyone confirm this? I was looking for the source of all this rumormilling, but it seems to evade me.

RPGCodex makes a good point about hand to hand, read their Oblivion review.

Hmm. I'm not sure. I do, however, remember a developer in an interview saying that if you wanted to be a hand to hand fighting monk you can do that... so, I'm assuming that hand to hand fighting has not been scrapped.

No info on any perks or what skill they would come under
A Bethesda person has said that playing a HTH character would be a viable choice. We will see

They are apparently under the 2-Handed skillset, along with 2 handed weapons.

I was about to say the same thing. Surely it counts as a 2 handed weapon. Which if you use the right perks for could be just as good as weapons.

The 2-handed and 1-handed perks have already been revealed but unfortunately no hand to hand perks.

Perhaps under Sneak. Otherwise, it seems there are no H2H perks in Skyrim.

I don't think Pickpocket or Light Armor make sense at all for H2H perks.

On the bright side, according to the Italian hands on preview, hand to hand attacks are greatly improved from Oblivion, with more gravity and physicality when you punch.

Read the review, some interesting points, I havn't played Vanilla oblivion in a very LONG time, so it dredged up some memories.

In regards to non-lethal.. I think that is a rather boring angle to take with it. In the previous games (morrowind springs to mind.) you knocked someone down, and they stayed down for all of five seconds. If the fists are going to be non-lethal then have your opponent stay down for longer.

On a different note, I punched a bear in the face repeatedly. I fail to see how this could NOT be implemented in Skyrim?

:P

Thanks for all the replies! Ive been trying to map out my first charactor and its a real shame I can't use HTH like I originally planned. However, if its tied to the 2Hand skill, that could be interesting.

*EDIT* Oh cmon. I can't believe there isn't a single perk. Fallout NV had some BOSS perks if I remember correctly.

Perhaps magic will have touch spells which allow hth fighters to be able to fight with lethal ability, but then take off the spells and fight in the bars. Or perhaps sneak will have a perk or two to allow some neck snapping from the shadows.

There just better be a way to fight hth.

RPGCodex has very well written reviews. They may be a little harsh on Beth but it's okay.
You can still punch things, I bet. I mean, WHO DOESN'T WANNA PUNCH A DRAGON?

I think fist fighting is non-lethal now. How else would they have non-lethal Tavern Brawls?

Lets say im holding a sheild and hitting a guy with my fist will my one handed skill go up ?It could be the perks on the one handed tree will apply to hand to hand things like damage modifyers and such or is there a reason that couldnt work ?

that's a good question.

It might still be governed by one-handed, it's just that there are no perks (unless Todd used a weird build of the game where they deliberately removed the H2H perks).

The hand to hand skill is gone, yes.
The ability to fight hand to hand, however, is not gone, as stated by a dev, and a hands on interview. Read facts people.

Can you give me a link to the 1 handed and 2 handed perks? I'd like to see them and have not been able to keep up to date on these forums since QC - too much info too fast. :P

I don't think I like the idea of H2H perks being under Sneak - I personally, as a Sneak user, will not be using H2H (not a reason for it NOT to be so, certainly) and people who use H2H would likely be irked for having to put their Sneak up to get better at H2H. The whole premise here was if you do something, you get better at it - it's one of the reasons I like pickpocket having it's own skill.
