Hand-to-Hand combat

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 9:24 am

Just to start a pointless but fun conversation while Skyrim comes out, I was wondering what you guys think that hand-to-hand combat will be in Skyrim. Do you thing they're gonna improve it? Maybe put kinds of martial arts? Or maybe the same old boring hand-to-hand combat...

I expect the same boring combat really.

Though it does give me some hope that their lead combat animator is an actual fighter himself.

I'm expecting it to be improved from Oblivion. Will it be a great option to use through the game? I'm not gonna get my hopes up. But I am expecting it to be decent, and look good.

As long as I hope that they will make something really cool out of it (add kicks for starters), somewhere in back of my head there is a voice telling me that it will probably be a letdown.
Still, let's see what they deliver to us before we start throwing stones at them, shall we? :)

it will be nice if the quality of the gauntlets affects resulting damage.

No it wouldn't
That will destroy the point of being unarmed fighter.
Way they should improve it is to find a way to improve it without classic weapons and armor.

I want to be able to send about a hundred punches per second at my opponent and kick at the speed of light, sending them flying back into a big stone or something. Then I can launch a volley of fireballs at them rapid-fire! All the while "Cha-La-Head-Cha-La" plays in the background. :mohawk:

But seriously, they need to give Hand-To-Hand some more work. It has been kinda crappy in the past games. Sure, I use a sword anyway, but if hand-to-hand was fun to use, I might use it more.

I really wish they would make H2H a more viable option, but considering they never did much with it in MW and OB I am very doubtful. I do wish, at least, put gloves back into the game (MW had gloves) and allow you to enchant for "on strike" effects which, since enchanted, allows you to hit creatures that require magic/silver weapons.

But I have a feeling you will more likely see bearded argonians than matial arts style H2H.

Yes and maybe mix have unique ways stealth and magic complement each other. If there is a battle mage let there be a ninja mage(ok maybe not a ninja mage but a rouge mage mix).

Yes, there is always hope. I don't know quite how it would be done but some grappling would be fun as well like. Holding down mouse button will release a mighty punch but if you are touching them you can grab them and beat them with your other limbs.

Exactly.
Also I would like to see some non destruction based magic that would that would allow mages to strike with telekinesis. This would damage fatigue mainly and you could hole punch blast back and maybe pull in an enemy. This would be fun use of physics IMO and really fun game-play.

I expect Hand to hand to still recieve the short hand of the stick, just like FO3, just like Oblivion, Just like Morrowind.

I was with you... but then you said you were joking. I'm pretty sure a super saiyan 2 can take Aldiun, and with a short range teleportation dragonshout one could possibly pull off an Instant Transmition Kamehameha. And flinging distructo disks at dragons would be pretty fun. Time to rock the dragon! :mohawk:

But ya, Hand to hand could use some more attention that it was given in the past games. Remember that chick from Avatar that used hand to hand to stop benders from bending? That's be pretty cool if hand ot hand fighters could easily paralize enemies and reduce their ability to use magic.

FO3 and F:NV definitely had an improvement in H2H, with NV being the better. Perks greatly strengthened the skill and made it rather deadly. The only real solution I can see for ES is to add unarmed weapons and perks for the bare-fisted monk.

Martial arts.

we need Punching, Kickining, Grabbing, Disarming, parrys and counters... I want it all.

It might be hard to do, but it'd be very cool to have.

I think I mentioned this in another H2H thread, but it would be nice if perks for H2H allowed for kicks. And if you could use gloves enchanted with "on strike" a perk to allow the enchanted effect to work on kicks not just with your hands. Maybe a stunning/stagger perk because of the new physics, a disarm perk, a greater damage perk (with levels so you can take it multiple times for greater effect, which I believe was mentioned in Todd's podcast. The perks with levels not a h2h perk that I'm talking about). Anything to make it a more viable skill. If you can't enchant gloves/gauntlets for "on strike" how about a high level perk that lets you hit opponents that require magic/silver weapons.

I hope hand to hand is let out of the actual combat system. IMO it is a bit silly as you would have to balance it for obvious reasons and I hate seeing someone beating a heavily armed skilled swordfighter with his bare hands! That being said I would love to see in non-combat (bar brawls where you do not intend to kill) situations.
Then there is the question of hand to hand with knuckles etc. If that is included I hope it is under one handed weapons instead of a separate skill hand to hand (I do not want the devs to waste a skill on hand to hand when there is only 18 skills).
And no martial arts please! It is difficult to implement and would look out of place in a Skyrim setting! - Batman Arkham City is out in october, that gives you approx. 1 month to mess around with martial skills in a game where it is well implemented.

I don't really mind if they dont put in martial arts. Even if they did, it would have to be an authentic Elder Scrolls fighting style. Anyway, i just wonder how they can upgrade the expereinc of H2H... 'Cause if you only add kicks and kucklers, you're just gonna keep swinging your arm everywhere like in Oblivion...

For h2h, I think I should be easier to disarm your opponent, like in AC2, than other weapons (if there is, like with swords in Oblivion). They already put in canned animation for finishing moves so why not make canned animation for disarming or countering?

idk about it being easier. In AC the weapons can't be sold so disarming a lot works. If you picked a fight with someone, disarmed them and the grabbed their sword and hid it before the guards arrested you you could amass a large amount of weapons or cash quickly. Although it would be interesting to steal all the weapons from guards in a city...
