Hard Core Mode? Yay or Nay?

Post » Sat Dec 05, 2009 5:42 am

Not sure if this has been posted yet, but would you like to see a hardcoe mode similar to that in Fallout: New Vegas, giving everything some kind of weight and requiring you to eat/drink regularly?

Personally I would only want to see a "hardcoe" mode if it was truly hardcoe (which it wasn't in FONV), and it was done in a way that allows you to use a non-default Timescale (using a slower Timescale with NV's hardcoe mode results in death when you sleep more than an hour or so).

Survival mods can better address this (I'll likely be releasing an Injuries/Needs mod for Skyrim . . . similar to my FO3 & NV's Med-Tec module).
NV's hardcoe mode caused all sorts of issues for modders and made it more difficult to create a truly hardcoe mod (with realistic Need rates, and without an over abundance of food, water, and beds to sleep in). It also caused a problem where any mods that altered the timescale (which was a necessity for many) were not compatible (Needs mods were not compatible with weather mods).

Only if it's optional.

Personally, I'm not remotely interested in something like that. (Didn't use FO:NV's, never gotten Primary Needs or FWE, etc, etc, etc.)

But as long as it's 1) optional, and 2) doesn't take development resources away from programming the real game, go right ahead.

Of course, even more hardcoe than in FO:NV , but of course optional.

If I am honest, I found hardcoe mode in FO:NV to be more bothersome then anything... it's just a nuisance rather then an experience. It's just gone to that point of slightly too micromanagement like, having to constantly watch your hunger/thirst/tiredness and then your character still gets ill every time you fast travel... if people want it, then I am not against it as an optional mode. However I don't think it's worth detraction from working on better things if it will require a lot of work to implement and I certainly wouldn't want achievements/rewards based on it like FO:NV since that's pretty much going to make people play the mode who don't want to play it...

This topic was old the last one thousand times it was posted.
And as always, I'll say a strong NAY.

New Vegas hardcoe.... fvck no. But, a more engaging, less annoying micromanagement based hardcoe mode, hell to the yes.

No drinking and eating... that's not how they make Elder Scrolls games, in my opinion.

Would fit the rugged feeling of Skyrim. Would make you feel more alive. Would also be fun if done in the right way.

It should definitely be optional if it's in.

I say yay! :intergalactic:

Once again, yay for sure. Made NV really fun I thought. But I think it should be an option yeah.

I just don't get the points of the "nay".

Yay it is. Neccessities of Morrowind handled it right, imo. I would just eat/drink, without doing anything, as long as the items are in my inventory. And I could, of course, choose to leave ingrediants, and manually eat.

I like the idea of being lost in the wilderness, starving, frantically looking for a way to civilisation. (Which is, of course, gone with fast travel. :cryvaultboy: )

When you turn on hardcoe mode the Fast travel is disabled..how about that? :)

Personally NV's hardcoe mode didn't really offer much in the way of changing the base gameplay. It was really a separate self-contained "layer" of gameplay - a bunch of annoying little status bars. Aside from the limb crippling system, it didn't really integrate much with the surrounding world or profoundly change the way you had to play through the game. A genuinely enjoyable hardcoe mode for Skyrim should actually change some of the game's ruleset, things like:
  • OB-style map travel should take more time and not heal the player. Disabling this option altogether could work too, although that will probably just lead to more violent arguments on this forum.
  • A modified economy so that items and services are more expensive. Taverns in the middle of nowhere should charge a sizeable fee for room and board. Merchants' items could restock less quickly, et cetera. Let's not make carriages and any other possible MW-style travel cost 20 gold again, while we're at it.
  • Make repairing equipment take time again. Leave items at a shop and return for them the day later. The tradeoff could be that shopkeepers can mostly repair items to a far greater degree than a player can (unless their skills are quite high).
  • Give some Radiant Story quests a time limit. I emphasize Radiant Story quests because they're infinite in number. It would add a far greater sense of urgency .After all, do you really think those bandits are going to be up there in the mountains with your friend's daughter for 4 years waiting for you?
  • The player can be incapacitated/disarmed if their stamina is empty. You know, give that bar some meaning again like in Daggerfall. With this being one of the stats attributes are folded into though, I'm hoping it already has some novel importance.

Other people have a different opinion than you? :)

(Also, the poll is asking for personal preference. "Would you like to see a hardcoe mode?" Someone who would NOT like to see that - which is different than "would you use the option if it were included" - would obviously answer "no". Seems pretty straightforward.)

But...

It's hardcoe MODE.

I don't understand what you lose with it's implementation.

Cleverer and more numerous enemies, less items in stores, permanent injuries, no fast travel, healing over time, yes. Having to eat, drink and sleep, no.

Fixed. :P

But yeah, I think this guy has a point. I would personally like to see an "Immersion Mode", and a "hardcoe Mode". hardcoe handles the likes of more enemies, permanant injuries, etc, whereas Immersion handles eating, drinking and sleeping.
