I'm not gonna lie, having companions die in hardcoe mode is definitely a huge challenge. I've had to reload my game countless times because my companions fell to the enemies while I came out unscathed. Even in the best armor they have the tendency to run right into the line of fire. While better "take-cover" AI would be nice, the thing I want to talk about here are the robot companions. I thought they would be awesome, because they certainly looked pretty cool (I did hardcoe on my first playthrough). I picked up ED-E in Primm first. Well, one day he must have gotten stuck in a wall or something. After goodness-knows-how-long, I finally realized he was missing from my party. I couldn't do anything about it, but a little later I got informed that ED-E had died, and I had no idea where he was, or how far back I would need to load my game to recover him, unglitched from some barren boulder out in the wasteland. He just so happened to be carrying two Van Graff Combat Armors I intended to sell, worth over 5000 caps each. But, sorrows aside, I got him out of my mind and did Rex's quest to recruit him. Well, this cyber-dog WILL NOT STOP chasing after enemies that are miles away or on different floors of a building. He's died many times to humans with firearms, but it was the worst in Vault 34, when he constantly ran away from me to follow some misguiding sound from another floor. I know now that I should have left him to wait outside, but I was partially too lazy and partially sick of Rex anyway. I told him to go to the Lucky 38 while inside the vault. No surprise, he probably ran headfirst into a room full of ghouls along the way and got himself killed (he certainly wasn't at the casino). I understand this was partially my fault, but does anyone else have the same problem with me regarding robot companions in hardcoe?
