hardcoe mode... a change of name

Post » Mon Dec 28, 2009 12:23 pm

Just include a Realism slider under the difficulty one. The extreme low end would be like vanilla OB or MW, the extreme far end would require eating and drinking and resting as much as a real person, under the same circumstances. So you can dial in the exact amount of realism you want.

I think most people agree on that there should be a hardcoe mode, resembling of that of Fallout NV, in Skyrim. Many polls have been for that. This thread is not for that.
This thread is for its name, assuming this hardcoe mode is included in the game.
I personally think the name "hardcoe mode" doesn't suit well at all with the TES world. It felt good with the Fallout world though, because there the atmosphere was different.

Do you think it should be changed? To what, then?

I personally think the name "Survival mode" would be better.

In the name of Political Correctness and not offending anybody by implying (perhaps correctly, heaven forbid) that they're not hardcoe enough for that game mode, it should be named "Inoffensive Highly-Customizable In-Game Effects Mode Not Intended To Imply Lack Of hardcoe-ness On Part Of Player."

I believe abraham lincoln once said
"how many legs does a dog have if you call its tail a leg?
four, because calling the tail a leg doesn't make it a leg."
I don't care, because the name doesn't change what it is

It's a good idea, but it's kinda hard to have. I mean, how would one know what difference in actual gameplay a 100% slider would be compared to a 70% slider? Also, things like real hunger, thirst, sleep, etc... they basically just go "turn off and on".
Nevertheless, they really need to add some real explanation of exactly what the option would affect.

I don't think there should be a "mode". Just add options for hunger, sleep etc. as options in the difficulty settings.

That sounds like a nightmare to implement.

Why should they? At 100% you would require the most food, drink, and rest. At 70 percent you would require 70% of the maximum. For example, at 100% you might have to sleep 8 hours a day or suffer penalties, so at 70% you would have to sleep roughly 6 (5.6) or suffer the penalties. Same idea for food and everything else.

I don't really care what they call it. hardcoe mode, Realism mode, Survival mode, it's still the same thing in the end. I would just prefer them to not tell me in game that there is a special reward for players who complete the game in said mode, and that reward is a -out of game- achievement. :brokencomputer:

I agree with you fully on this one.
I think the mode should be rather called Roleplaying mode or something similar. hardcoe does sound very stupid and Fallout NV:s so called "hardcoe mode" was easier than i have with HTS-mods(Hunger-Thirst-Sleep) on Fallout 3.

However i don′t really see a point in discussing about a difficulty mode that hasn′t even been announced or even slighty hinted by the developers.

I'd probably call it "Immersion Mode" or "Realism Mode" or something like that. "Survival mode" makes it sound like a deathmatch mode. "hardcoe mode" just doesn't describe it very well. There's nothing particularly hardcoe about eating and sleeping. I eat and sleep everyday, and I'm not an especially hardcoe person. In fact, I just ate a muffin. *beats chest* I am hardcoe, ya!

As soon as I see a "Mode" option in a game it instantly feels like its gone arcade like. I would instead prefer something like an advanced difficulty slider beneath the regular slider. Fully off having none of the "hardcoe/survival" content turned on, and turned all the way up having it all turned on, small text specifying what each stage of the slider includes.

I personally think it's better to keep difficulty and these "survival/realism" features kept aside. I'm sure there are people who likes survival/realism features but doesn't like full difficulty against enemies, and vise-versa.

I would also like to see a Roleplay mode as well as the Survival/hardcoe mode.

If you are part of a guild, you must take on menial tasks that are given out every few days; failure to do them gets you expelled for not doing your duties. Fighters guild might need you to clear out any caves etc that are within a radius of the city or something; Mages guild will require ingredients to be collected regularly; Thieves guild will require a steady supply of stolen goods to keep their coffers full and the Dark Brotherhood will require nasty things to be done in their name.

You can be thrown out of cities for walking around all equiped like you want a fight, you'll have to slip into something more comfortable, like some nice silk threads if you want any respect from the towns folk.

Would be nice if you could select a profession when you select to start Roleplay mode, like Adventurer, Alchemist, Shop keeper or whatever. You will be given a small shack or shop and you have to do daily chores to keep your job or you will fail and lose.

What about just "hard" or "difficult"?

What about we change the name of The Elder Scrolls IV: Skyrim to The New Bethesda Game: 2011

Also, instead of giving NPC's silly names like Martin or Jess, we could call them NPC00001 and NPC00002.

Whats in a name?

Does it really matter what it's called? Your only going to be seeing it once or twice in the start menus, that is to say if it is even in the game.

I prefer hardcoe mode over survial mode, I can't really see it being much of a survival atmosphere in a land where inns and markets are always at hand if you needed to eat calling it roleplaying mode sounds better to me but im still up for something better

I don't see a survival atmosphere either, especially with magic and what-not. Does anyone know the lore behind the limits of magic in the Elder Scrolls? Roleplaying mode or immersion mode are the best suggestions so far. And I don't think they'll include drinking/eating in that.

Survival or Realism mode...
The name needs to change to negate negative feelings with its current association,
Otherwise I don't care.
