hardcoe Mode (merged topics)

When I first played Fallout 3 for the lost tracked hours I played it, It was loads of fun. I did not think It could be more fun until Obsidian introduced Fallout New Vegas... I Knew it was going to be a matter of time before I played the [censored] out of it, but then it introduced an amazing Mechanic, hardcoe Mode. I found myself in a new town of Good springs, adventuring about where I was going to spend the night, and hunting Coyotes for my supper and the like. This pre-though of my adventures was an added element of fun. Prepping a mixture of inventory of what Ammo I was using, what was most likely going to get me though to the next town, and basically optimizing between food and Water, as well as gambling for the caps to buy some mole rat stew. This was 110% more fun to the formula of fallout 3, making the game 210% fun at one given moment.

Skyrim was announced shortly after I got though a majority of the game FalloutNV, and I was looking forward to it, until I found the game so streamlined it felt like I was playing a game of an Olympics Runner working his overtime full time job as a Fed Ex. Granted there were many improvements on the games formula from oblivion, but I found for me that the loss of complexity made the game rather dull. I was having 60% fun, thats a sharp 150% spike drop. That was until I discovered modding. Slowly, My game was becoming an epic Tolken style quest, that soon lost sight of the main story. Eventually I was an Orkish Monopoly guy with a finger in enough pies that if he licked his fingers hed die of diabetes, in fact with one of the mods I would not be surprised if that happens, installed to optimize the game to my liking, I installed a Mod Called IMCN or imps more complex needs, and Eventually I ate my way though Dietary mastery to become a gluttonous god, eating roasted bits of Goat, eran running, and sleeping in Inns. I had also Installed Cheskos Frostfall, and played that on hardcoe. There was a thrill to be had at plotting my course again, this time bagging game, and using pelts to ensure I had the Right tools to survive in the Harsh lands of Skyrim, that seemed before so trivial. This had restored the game back to 100% fun. However I had also discovered more mods to the older games, IMCNs mod also applied to Fallout3 and NV and added more complexity to my hearts desire.

I Know Fallout 4 Is going to have a Weather system, and will likely have food as an item again, What I want to know is will there be a hardcoe Survivalist mode in Fallout4?
If not I think Ill just wait until the developers put it in before buying it.

At this time beth has neither confirmed nor denied hardcoe mode, the presence of cooking stations in game gives some hope, but no full confirmation yet.

Well, "hardcoe" in FONV wasn't really hard at all, not even with Sawyer's mod and Very Hard difficulty. If we want survivalist elements, we have to hope that BGS included it and made it actually hard (i.e., something we actually need to be concerned with rather than merely another micromanaging task).

In FO3, I use several mods to make things actually difficult for survival, at least until the midgame and afterwards when I have proper protection equipment (for radiation from environment as well as food and drink) as well as more supplies.

One way or the other, it's certainly not something to avoid buying the game because we can always add it even if it isn't there (FO3) or is there but isn't actually a concern (FONV).

Not in the same way New Vegas or most mods implement it, but yes, we should have a reason to eat and sleep regularly and there should be more environmental and weather hazards. You can do "hardcoe" gameplay and still keep it simple.

Hopefully foodstuffs will have a purpose in F4, unlike in Skyrim in which food is largely useless.

If it's optional, sure, why not? I won't use it myself, but other people seem to like it. I think it should be added by Bethesda for any console players who can't add it via a mod.

Where's the "I never really used it, but it was a nice option" option?

I didn't find the way New Vegas did it to be "hardcoe" or very challenging at all. Ammo having weight was interesting but everything else in the mode was pretty boring IMO. Luckily I read in ann article on here (can't remember from what site) that storms will be dangerous because they will cause radiiadtion and I really hope Beth doesn't lie about that. That's the kind of diffaculty that I find fun because it isn't as easily fixable as finding non rare food and water and simply clicking A button to cure the food n water need.

Only thing i'd really miss from "hardcoe" mode (sarcasm quotes) is ammo having weight and healing happening over time (instead of instantly).

Well, judging by your post Beth has only ever achieved 100% fun factor (and that was partly because you had modded Skyrim) while NV hit 210%. Considering that Skyrim had zero survival mode or food eating that meant anything and a very limited amount of character development at the start, I doubt that Beth has the desire to implement it. Of course it would be fantastic and I would love to be proved wrong.

if they can implement it without sacrificing development in any other area I'll support those people that want the mode, but personally, I found it more of an annoyance than anything else. It wasn't more challenging, it wasn't hard to meet the requirements, and it wasn't fun, it was just more nit-picky little things that I had to stop and do occasionally. If I want survival I'll play a game based on those ideas.

Forget about hardcoe mod, traits and a ton of quests that you can solve by using you skills and not your weapon.

Fallout 4 is made by Bethesda and not by Obsidian.

Yup! New Vegas HC mode + mods to further enhance it; Skyrim + RND + Frostfall.

Will be very disappointed if they don't include a HC mode in Fallout 4.

Said it before, after playing NV, hardcoe mode is the only way to go for me, it adds that little bit of extra immersion.

This. It's nice to have the option for the comparitively few who care about it (also, it doesn't seem like it would take that much programming to do, at least the NV method). But I'd never use Excess Tedium mode, personally.

...also, I'd prefer it be named something like Survival or Simulation mode. It's not some super-hard setting for l33t g4m3rz to prove their manliness with/use to look down on everyone who doesn't use it.

Ammo weight and most of all no instant healing would increase difficulty, the eating and drinking is mostly for immersion.

I uses an survival mod in Skyrim, yes its lots of food around, water is common so unless in an deep dungeon its mostly for immersion.

One issue with say FO:NV hardcoe is that sleeping bags are common and its easy to make an campfire.

Yes this take up weight who might be an design in it self, high quality pre war gear is rare but lightweight, note that sleeping anywhere is dangerous.

I really got into hardcoe mode in New Vegas. Played through it a couple of times. :tops:

I also played Frostfall in Skyrim, but not RND.

hardcoe done right is a great improvement to the game.

It enhances immersion and provides a way to increase the challenge without just increasing the hit points and damage of the opposition.

And there will be a lot of mods to allow you to fine tune it.
