hardcoe Servers?

Post » Mon Jul 20, 2009 1:51 pm

I know that gamesas probably isn't gonna take any suggestions from us forum rats, but i just thought it would be cool if they had "hardcoe" servers. And not "hardcoe" as in "oh im hardcoe, i raid for 36 hours straight, and haven't left my mom's basemant since tuesday" hardcoe. but as in harder. they would be, similar to PVP and RP servers, in that they are separated. and these servers would work like the hardcoe modes of other games, in that Weapons would do more Damage, and like in Fallout NV, where you can Dehydrate, starve, and you need to sleep. Also ammo, food, water and other stuff work be more scarce, and more expensive. :ugeek: Give me an axe and point me towards the caribou, dinners on me.

Some of the options you mention are ones I think should be in the basic game: Needing food, protection from radiation, water, etc. Environmental hazards make for interesting games if done well. Image

well, i said put it on the hardcoe servers because some people don't want to worry about starving or dieing of thirst, they just wanna go on and kill some Pig rats... :ugeek: Give me an axe and point me towards the caribou, dinners on me.

basic game shouldn't have: Food/water necessity. Because I don't want to spend my time playing eating/drinking. It would be a nice feature to eat/drink but on a normal server, not a necessity.

Radiation is another thing that could exist on the normal servers I think, like make a couple of places that can radiate you, but should contain some pretty expensive stuff to loot :P Image

that's what i meant, the hardcoe ones would be harder, and in general more realistic... :ugeek: Give me an axe and point me towards the caribou, dinners on me.

I want the gameplay to be competitive and unforgiving (like Pre-AoS Ultima Online).. so I approve of this idea

I would love to see another player with a 'glow' walk into town and all the guards and PCs open fire on him/her. We wouldn't want any of our nice shiny towns infected with radiation poisoning would we!? This gives me an idea for a great quest...

Get radiated or pack a bottle of radiated water to throw on some jerk or jerks. Get out of dodge. "What would your good do if evil didn't exist, and what would the earth look like if all the shadows disappeared?"

What he meant with the glow was a place in fallout 1, which had major radiation levels, a quest from BoS led you there, to pick up a data file and then return it, after that you would be able to join the BoS. Problem was that you couldn't get close (even on worldmap) without getting severe radiation poisoning, you had to bring lots of Rad Away and Rad-X, rad-x to lower radiation intake and rad away to get the poiso out of your body :P

I'm guessing you are referring to fallout threes "glowing ones". Fallout 1,2 glowing ones where still a bit human-like (they didn't go rampage whenever they saw you and they didn't shoot our radiation with a big boom) Image

That could also be a part of hardcoe servers, the ability to become a Ghoul, or just receive mutations if you don't get rid of Radiation quick enough... :ugeek: Give me an axe and point me towards the caribou, dinners on me.

Regarding eating/drinking. It wouldn't have to be something you actively do. In the old Everquest game, for example (and probably others as well, they just arn't coming to mind) you just had to have food and water in your inventory, and it would be eaten automatically when needed.

Gah, its been 7 odd years since I played EQ, I might be misremembering.. maybe you just had to click on it when hungry. At any rate, it didn't take any time/any appreciable amount of time.. it was present if you didnt have food, but if you didnt it was background.

And we should have "Soft core" servers where everyone just cuddles and pink unicorns fart fuzzy rainbows that are made up of kittens playing... joy! MMO's... MMO's never change...

well i hope they don't because a hardcoe server would give more of a challenge to players that find normal servers boring, while still allowing people to play on a normal server if they don't want a challenge, but "softcoe" servers would just be boring... :ugeek: Give me an axe and point me towards the caribou, dinners on me.

For an MMO hardcoe server would most likely just mean consentual PVP vs Non-Consentual PVP Image

When I saw this post the first time I imagined a "hardcoe" FOOL server in the Diablo 2 sense... defeat = death and you're not coming back. This would be scary from an MMO player's standpoint, unless the gameplay was built such that leveling is somewhat quick, but given the harshness of the wasteland the common wanderer has a high chance of dieing. As I've said before, hard on the endgame players, but interesting and different from an MMO standpoint.

That would a a cool idea, and it might just work, because if you die permanently you would be less likely to fight someone, and hence be less likely to be attacked, due to the fear of dieing... :ugeek: Give me an axe and point me towards the caribou, dinners on me.

For me - hardcoe - is more a easy thing.
Take the consequences of your doing. You blame a NSC that can give you a Quest... ok no Quest.
You think it is allright to shoot people of a city... ok, be hunted by the other.

Why it that hardcoe?
:) Eh think at the people you play with in other MMO. You can do every thing until you die because it was to hard for you. Stand up and one time more or not, it does not matter.

In this case it will be hardcoe to think first and act than. Excuse me, if my english is not so well like it should be. I am German and not so well trained in english

exactly, it would be a sever (or be servers) that you can't simply run around and shoot whomever you want, because if you try you get pwned by a sniper  ... :ugeek: Give me an axe and point me towards the caribou, dinners on me.

another thing for hardcoe servers could be the need to aim, as in the game wouldn't auto-aim for you, you would have to aim each shot, like in true FPSs :ugeek: Give me an axe and point me towards the caribou, dinners on me.

Thats something I liked about... that other post apocalyptic game. However, having played a lot of CoD4/MW2 and MoH lately, a huge problem can be seen with having a reflex-based shooter combat system.

Latency and graphical lag.

Especially in a persistent world game.

Ive seen some video from... that not yet released space MMO based on a popular space opera movie franchise.. and it seems like they use a more traditional combat system even with projectile and energy weapons. I dont see why it couldn't work here.. perhaps as a remodel/extention of the VATS system.
