Haruhi's Top 10 ESSENTIAL Mods

Post » Tue Sep 28, 2010 7:50 am

Please note these are all optional and completely opinionated mods that do not have any relation with me, except for the mere fact that I enjoy these mods immensely. These mods, in no way, are created from my hands, and are respectfully the owner's rights and properties.

Well with that settled, here we are.

1. CONELRAD 640-1240 - Civil Defense Radio
Link - http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35061
Reason - What's not to love about a radio station that plays a constant loop of songs worth 2 hours and on top of that, a new DJ! Bored of Johnny Guitar? Tired of Big Iron? This mods for you!

2. Perk Every Level
Link - http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34707
Reason - A perk every level, to maximize the fun with plenty of new perks that allow for maximum usage in your character, and allows for you to choose 30 perks! Just a fun-

3. Moddable Uniques
Link - http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35009
Reason - Unfortunately, unique weapons were not meant to be modded. However, with this mod, unmoddable uniques are now moddable! Feeling sad you can't attach a scope to your favored AER14 Prototype Laser Rifle? Well now you can! Like an extended magazine on Maria? Look no further, this mod is here for you!

4. FIXED Autoaim
Link - http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34723
Reason - Fixed autoaim! Tired of bullets curving whenever aiming at an enemy too far away? Unlucky with that sniper rifle when it looks like you hit the guy right on the dot? Well, with this mod, all your bullets go EXACTLY where you want. Perfect for those players playing snipers.

5.Bullet Impact Increased LOD
Link - http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35591
Reason - This mod goes hand in hand with mod 4, as it allows a player to see further with just a click. Enemies detected on your radar but too far away to spy on? Not anymore.

6. UNLIMITED Companions
Link - http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34870
Reason - Playing on Very Hard and those deathclaws killing you every step of the way? Are you angry at dying almost every time you raid that Legion's camp, or NCR's base? Well, with a couple more companions, this'll be quite helpful in your next conquest! Introducing infinite companions, with as many companions as you can find, all ready to fire on an enemy, to be a pack mule, or to just plain talk to with their funny quotes.

7. ZOOM-ZOOM-ZOOM Binoculars
Link - http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34715
Reason - Those binoculars being useless again with their minimized zoom and low usability? Tired of a completely useless zoom that's almost the same, if not less, as a sniper scope? Well, with this mod, the binoculars get an added range, perfect for scouting out enemies far, far away, in another galaxy. Be a scout today!

8. Reinforced Chinese Stealth Suit
Link - http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35130
Reason - Do you miss that old Chinese Stealth Suit with the cool stealth shield and the fact you just looked great in it? In Fallout: New Vegas, that's gone. However, with this mod, the re-introduction of the Stealth Suit is back, with even BETTER upgrades and much more fun! Thanks to this mod, your character can feel confident in that stealth shot that would have otherwise been impossible, sneak into camps without making a sound, or just plain chill in this awesome 'suit of stealth'.

9. C.O.D. Fans [Sniper Rifle w/ PP2000]
Link - http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35770
Reason - Think that Anti-material Rifle isn't doing enough damage? Don't like the zoom factor on the old sniper rifles already in Fallout: New Vegas? Well, with this mod, it adds 2 brand new snipers along with a backup weapon, namely the Barrett .50 Cal and the PP2000. There's also another sniper added, but you have to download to find out. All weapons downloaded are fitted with extravagant mods that come with silencers and magazine expansions, and MORE. A fun mod for those preferring new snipers or reminiscing in the good old COD days.

10. Expanded Conversation and Boxes
Link - http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34902
Reason - This mod provides for expanded boxes and even bigger conversation boxes for one to talk to. Also, it increases the size of the box for trading weapons, selling weapons, and dialogue. No longer will you have to scroll down for those conversation choices, when you can see them all at once!

Well, these are my top 10 mods for Fallout.

Most of these are just mods to make things easier, other than CONELRAD. I don't really want to sound elitist or anything, but many of these simply remove a great deal of the RPG element, and leave NV as a mediocre FPS.

Why would you put this on the list without a more perks mod? Vanilla already leaves you looking for perks to choose sometimes.

Not really with some 80+ perks (with some that you can take 2 or 10 times for Intense Training). So if you can't find 30 perks to spend those on you may not be looking.

My mistake, I thought perks were for making unique characters, but apparently they're just there so you can choose the same one over and over and max your stats.

Roll your eyes all you want but with 86 peaks you never have to take the same one twice to use all 30 levels worth of perks and still have "unique" characters, to pretend otherwise is funny.

Be nice. The vast majority of players are powergamers, min/maxers and munchkins. I don't like it either but it's a single player game and they can play it however they like.

That is nowhere near an "essentials" list. http://www.pcgamer.com/2010/11/02/25-best-fallout-new-vegas-mods/, however, comes quite close.

"Fixed" that for you. The only thing FOMM is good for is installing FOMODs and creating BSA files, from what I've seen.

I didn't really care for that 'essentials' list you provided, either.

I think I use and enjoyed maybe... two of the mods on it? Out of twenty five, that's not exactly what I would call spot-on. Of course, that being said, I never imagined for a moment that this was going to be an article with a list of mods -I- personally needed. Very few people understand my needs. I had a fish that knew what I liked, once... but sadly... it's float-bladder burst and she died shortly after.

I was sad for a while... but I moved on. I was six. I've had a lot of time to cope between then and now.

My point is: nobody really has the same 'essentials' list.

Rather than -knocking- this one... how about you fine folks put up your own lists of things you consider essential?

We could turn this thread from being flame bait and uselessness... into something interesting.

Or I can go back to talking about my goldfish, my childhood, and my struggle against OCD and bore the rest of you into submission.

I think nobody wants that.

Even that one is highly subjective. I'm not interested in most of those.

I wouldn't say that any mod is truly essential. Even for Morrowind most people agree the true essentials don't go further than the MW Patch Project, the MW Code Patch, and Better Bodies (and that one is up for debate. :P). For all other mods there are alternatives that people might like more, or they change something that isn't undeniably an improvement, unlike pure bugfixes.

It's nice to see people share lists though, it makes it easier for others to see what's out there.

... aah, the subjective "must have" lists.... there is nothing essential about the original post or the magazine link. Just opinions based on personal taste. If there is one thing that I would consider essential, is the GECK, period. Without getting the GECK, I would not have bought the game. Of course, console players would say "meh"...

Ah, well then... let me tell you more of it while I list off some mods I love, and would highly recommend to a friend looking for mods.

1.) Tailor Maid. Reasoning: Because sometimes, you just need to put shoulder pads on your leather jacket, pull up your metal plated boots, and latch that Combat Armor Chest-Piece up right good before marching out into the certain death that is the Mojave Desert.

As I was saying before, though... very few people ever understood me as a child. I was quiet... and shy... and I learned how to run before I could walk. This led to a large number of bruises and injuries... as well as me earning a reputation for being clumsy as an ox. It was a simple existence, though. I lived in my own little world... and when others questioned me... or challenged the existence I had chosen... I could easily shut them out.

My folks like to say I was 'busy'... but really, what this means, is that I knew how to keep myself entertained.

I didn't even need toys. When grounded, I had been known to play with rocks. And it was fun.

I first got my fish, Goldenrod 'Goldy' the Orangefish when I was about four or five. We'd just moved into a new city... and I was alone... and I had difficulty making friends, what with being shy as I am...

2.) Perk Every Level & ST Perks and Traits (get them both). Reasoning: Not only do you get, count 'em THIRTY perks to choose from, but the perks and traits included with ST's mod are by and far some of the best I have found on the net. Bringing back classic traits and forgotten perks, this mod is well-deserving of my number-two slot.

... and my parents were worried that, if I didn't make friends, I might be come antisocial... and then a sociopath... and then a psychotic, rampaging murderer. Obviously, the solution to this problem was a fish. My very own friend. Something for me to take care of... and connect to.

I haven't killed anyone yet... so perhaps they were on to something...

Mods that i feel are essential would be anything that raises your games performance and fixes game errors etc... As much as I may love mods and think omg this is probably the best mod out there or whatever, if its just a game play mod like changing your perks or making a gun better etc then its NOT essential to have it. Just my opinion :D

3. Moddable Uniques

8. Reinforced Chinese Stealth Suit

I got used to unmoddable uniques with FWE, but i may start to use that one. The reinforced stealth suit is indeed an improvement over the one in the game, though i feel it has too high DT and the permanent stealth field is still cheating. But the DT is easy to change and the mod includes a stealth-fieldless version.

"Perk every level" mod appeared very quickly for NV, but i never found a "perk every other level" mod for Fallout 3 :lmao:

I certainly didn't mean to take the list I linked to as an "essential" mod list - I just said it was close.

DarNified UI is an essential mod. Mods that make the game easier and stray from the original intentions of the developer are, all-in-all, not essential.

Goldenrod... was a good fish. A quiet fish. A remarkably -fat- fish.

Perhaps, in my adorable youth, I had falteringly believed I might -starve- this new friend of mine... and instead overfed her, with both attention... and flakes. No matter the cause... it was obvious that this fish was a giant among Orangefish. Her scales so large, they might well have repelled fire. Her gills so strong... she could have breathed the air.

3.) Canteen. Reasoning: Because sometimes, you want -more- than just one drink of water. This mod is single handedly the -king- of water mods. Why? Because it gives you not just the ability to 'bottle' water and carry it around with you... but it gives you the ability to CANTEEN water... and drink it over TIME.

Ours was a friendship that could not be defined by mere mortal logic.

My fish and I were inseparable... except for all those times when I had to leave. Those were many, and often, what with me approaching the school-age then. It was hard to stay home sick as much as I did, feigning illness to spend time with my fish... but the time spent during those days built character. I grew into a more responsible human being, shirking off homework and the shackles of a life which attempts to destroy the decency within us.

I fed my fish. I spoke to it. I watched as she swam in circles, occasionally flitting about between her fake plants... or hiding inside her small shipwreck.

Yes, it was through this fish that I learned to make sense of the world around me... to connect

4.) Whatever that mod is with the portable camp site in a bag. Reasoning: Awesome. What more reason do you need? It's a camp site... in a bag... complete with TURRETS for defense while you sleep. I only wish it came with more tables and chairs.

Oh, but as with all things... every good experience must come to an end.

I like the standard UI just fine... but when I do feel compelled to use another, I like the Interface Mod - Revelation.

Definitely feels like a throwback, for me.

5.) Better Casinos + Casino Unbanner (Get them both). Reasoning: Because casinos don't permanently ban their High Rollers. High Rollers bring in OTHER gamblers, who in turn make the Casino money. They might send the High Roller home after hitting a certain point... but they're not going to say 'And don't come back, you cheating bastard.' They're going to say, 'Next time you're in Vegas, make sure you come -here-.'

Swim Bladders are important things to understand, in fish.

I never really did understand them... which might have had nothing to do with the death of my fish at all... but my failure to understand what this problem was still riddled me with guilt for minutes.

The image of my father, dragging my fish around by her tail in the tank, and then performing 'chest compressions' to bring her back to life... certainly did leave me with a sense of right and wrong, however. Right is being willing to go to whatever insane lengths it takes to make things better. Sometimes right might look like wrong. Sometimes wrong might look like Bob Saget... you just never can tell.

My fish ultimately died. And I felt bad for a while.

This was mostly because my father clogged the toilet for three weeks by flushing this enormous, fat orangefish down the drain.

In retrospect, he should have known better.

6.) That Bugfix Compilation that's here on the forum. Reasoning: Because the game has bugs... and this fixes some of them. Why else?

And so, as that chapter of my life closed... I learned something more about myself.

Primarily, that I dislike Bob Saget. Not only for subjecting me to Full House for however many episodes which my sister unerringly forced me to watch until she eventually moved out of the house and kids of her own to torment... but also for having the nerve to think that he's funny. He's not.

I also learned that I catch myself doing things in certain patterns.

When I don't do them in this certain way... such as rinsing my cup out three times... I begin to have the unshakable sensation that the world will explode and everyone will die terrible, violent deaths.

This, as it would happen, is part of a condition called Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

People people... come on now. Let's all really consider what the word "essential" means.

And why no links? Help out your fellow man and all that?

==========================
(REALLY) ESSENTIAL MODS
==========================

1. http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34778, or the alternate: http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34970.

Improves performance drastically on my machine. No stuttering, much smoother gameplay is what everyone wants. Don't be afraid, just install it.

2. http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35262

Allows New Vegas to use up to 3.5GB or so of RAM, whereas without the mod it's limited to 2. Essential if you have at least 4GB of RAM. Even better if you have more RAM than that and a 64-bit OS. As the game is optimized for the freaking 4-year old or whatever X-box, it is not optimized for a higher-end PC. With the extra RAM this mod gives you, you can crank up a lot of graphical settings in the .ini file to make things much more visually appealing. Read the comments http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35262&tab=4&navtag=/modules/comments/index2.php?tid=251916|:|fid=35262|:|sort=DESC for more info on that.

3. http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1135390-wipzbeta-darnified-ui-nv/

Wait, what? You haven't installed this mod yet? You one of those weirdos who loves scroll bars? There's zero reason not to install this. Unless you game without your glasses because it does make the fonts a bit smaller.

4. http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35011

Nobody likes to be told where they can't go in this kind of game. Tear down the walls of injustice! Pass where you please! This mod is safe and has never crashed my game. It also doesn't remove EVERY wall in the game, unfortunately. Having said that, traveling over the mountains west of Goodsprings will completely murder immersion as there's just zilch there except for plain, desert land textures as far as the eye can see.

===================================================
FOR hardcoe PLAYERS ONLY
===================================================

Want to get the most out of this game? Want to fix many underdeveloped and overlooked skills and items and make the game much deeper and more rewarding? Of course you do - you paid good money for this game and it's a great game.

The essential hardcoe mods:

1. http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34759

It's either this or the http://newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35715 combat module. I'm currently using Arwen's + Hardercore's healing and wealth mods. Why? Because I found that I leveled too fast, healed myself too quickly and easily, never found medicine a skill worth investing in, never used items like blood packs, had too much money, etc. If you REALLY want hardcoe gameplay, check these out.

2. http://newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=36208

OK, so I've never been hit by a grenade in real life. But I have a feeling that it would probably really ruin my day. In New Vegas, grenades are so weak they don't even make enemies mad. A sneak attack with a sniper rifle does more damage than a mini-nuke. Rockets virtually bounce off deathclaws. Install this mod and get your BOOM on.

Enough for now. Here's to a better NV experience.
