Has anyone played the holotape games?

Post » Mon Dec 14, 2015 7:36 pm

I've had them sitting in my inventory but I've never bothered to play any of them until now, 170 hours into the game. Let me just say that Grognak and the Ruby ruins is a better RPG than the rest of Fallout 4. I was impressed by how indepth it was for a minigame, even though it took me a little over an hour to beat. It's played like a really classy mid-90s CRPG, with some choose your own adventure styled mechanics. You can choose between half a dozen party members each with their own abilities, clear dungeons and find loot to increase hp and strength, and there's even a fighting arena you have to fight in (it was only 2 fights but still better than the Combat Zone lol). Combat is turn based of course but kind of challenging, and all enemies hit pretty hard requiring you to get healing after every fight.

Overall I was really impressed by this and havent even played the other holotape games left. I highly recommend the Grognak game because I feel like a lot of people overlook these holotape games. The others are more simple like a space invaders and donkey kong ripoff but can still provide some quick thrills to break away from the mindless raider fights in the main game.

i gave the donkey kong one about 10 min and didn't even make level 1 :-)

late 80ies rather.

mid 90ies rpg's (fallout, for example :-) were far beyond that already

...ok heroes of might and magic still played like that in mid 90ies maybe, but you know what i mean... :-)

Haha yeah I'll admit I haven't really played any old crpgs except for Daggerfall and I think one of the King's Quest games. I guess what I meant is that the grognak game looks like an old crpgs. I wish it was a little longer or if there was a sequel because it was pretty awesome. Maybe modders will be able to make more holotape games in the future.

Gave em a quick go, nice distraction I guess. Still kinda miss the minigames from FONV though, I was hoping we could play pool with our settlers for caps or caravan or something.

I have so far sold all my mini-games and magazines. But I will do a playthrough eventually where I check them all out.

They're fun to play but have short life span, good improvement on the F3 pipboy.

That was the only one I played and I made it to level 3 or so. I only played a few minutes.

- Terrible dialog system, literally just "Talk"

- Not enough content

- Forced backstory means every Grognak is the same

- Railroaded storyline

- Wide as an ocean, deep as a puddle

Grognak & the Ruby Ruins isn't a real RPG

*blows raspberry*

(but no really, the Pipboy minigames are great. The humor in Grognak makes it my favorite, and it definitely gives me the urge to play Daggerfall. I, uh, kinda svck at the rest except Zeta Invaders)

Nope, don't see the purpose of playing it when I'm already playing a game that's supposed to take me into the game world.

Heh, the one missile game (I think it's called "Atomic Command" or something like that) was an arcade game way back when, called "Missile Command", and I shudder to think of how many quarters I poured into arcade machines to play it. It seems so poor and crude now, but lemmee tellya, it was amazing back in the day. "Joust", "Pole Position" "Missile Command" and "Star Wars" ate my lunch money for years... :)

know the original, pitfall? just as hard

and with the pipboy games in general, my main problem is jumping, got that on e (space is my "activate"), doesn't go together too good with w-a-s-d for a jump*n*run

---anybody seen a https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrqDsbLMYaE btw? (one of my fav computer game tunes ever :-)

we definitely need a pip boy fallout 4 cartridge, so we can play someone who's playing a game who's playing a game who's playing a game who's playing a game.... :-))

A question... does time pass while you're playing those games? If it did, that would be a great way to wait for dawn when you're not anyplace where you can sit down... I presume it doesn't though.

I played Red Menace and made it to level one. I've found a couple of others but haven't played them yet.

Not really bothered with them. Tried the first one you find for a bit, never made it to level two, don't bother with them anymore.

Have the Holotape in your inventory, go to the Misc tab, and activate it. Your character will pop the Holotape in, and the game will start.

I tried once before the patch... And found out that the keys were hardcoded so I couldn't move in the game.

Haven't tried it again after the patch.

Atomic Command needs a really big track ball to do the arcade version justice (preferably a wonky one that's been abused by thousands of kids). It's just not the same with a mouse.

I keep all my magazines and intend to do the same for the mini-games. I really love the comic book style of most of the magazine covers.

Only mini-game i have played so far is Red Menace (Donkey Kong) and it's definitely a 1980s joy buzzer flashback for me. Really impressed how it plays and gives off the same 80's vibe of the original.
