Has a Doctor told you this?

Post » Fri Dec 05, 2014 4:04 pm

That comes up as a red flag for me. Snacking on cornchips is fine and all, what you said there makes it sound like you were eating to pass time rather than to sate hunger provide nutrition. If that is how it was, then I hope you're not in the habit of it 'cause it's very unhealthy (as it leads to people consuming more food than they need).

And he would have politely informed you're entirely free to shorten your life however you wish, he's just suggesting ways to lengthen it instead .

Ideally, a doctor will help you not get sick in the first place.

Exactly!

 :shakehead:

Everyone is a specialist of everything these times. If I have a question about quantum mechanics I'll ask John Doe about it. He probably knows more than the physicist in lab coat. Narcissism of the 20-21th century?

I've never been told my using the computer a lot was bad by any doctors. One eye doctor was pretty apathetic towards me having large amounts of screen time. My psychiatrist does ask about violent video games and I said I do play them since I just was talking about my interests. She said nothing since I was obviously pretty docile. I told her I listened to metal to calm myself down and preferred aggressive music and, once again, no craps given. She just found it interesting that something so aggressive calmed me down.

I've never met a doctor who actually gave long winded sermons on the dangers of anything. Maybe I just always have laid back doctors. Even doctors who didn't see me much if ever have been pretty laid back to me.

You only live once. Enjoy your Doritos and computers. Better than eating carrots and other rabbit food.

I don't think I've had the "computers are bad, mmmmkay?" speech, though I have been told to take regular breaks. It would appear that a quick glance at me suggests that I probably don't.

I have been told off for drinking too much, smoking too much, eating too many crisps, eating too much chocolate etc (some of which I've given up, or at least reduced) which is annoying but also kinda fair enough considering I'm diabetic and I've had a heart attack. Why can't my body be indestructible? Bastard that it is.

That is the ideal, though it seems it's an idea that's seldom practised: it's something to nag the patients about rather than an actual good idea, bizarrely. Doctoring seems to be like economics in that there's a total obliviousness to the adage that a penny spent today is a pound saved tomorrow.

That's what I was thinking. I would not want to be considered the sort of person that needs doritos in a Doctor's surgery.

Moderation is impossible with crisps. The only way is zero tolerance.

I'm that way with donuts. I eat pretty healthy though I do enjoy the occasional not-so-healthy meal. However donuts are like my ultimate weakness. I hate it when my wife asks me to get dessert whenever I go to the market because I always walk by the bakery and it takes an incredible amount of willpower to not grab a donut. And I don't pick the small light ones either...I need chocolate and bavarian cream and I want that svcker to be the size of a hoagie.

To the OP:

I've had a doctor tell me a few times of the dangers of certain things, only I will counter with the benefits and point out how overrated and misunderstood a lot of the dangers are. Point of the story is: know what you're putting into your body, at least a little bit that way you can better keep track of what you're doing overall. I might have that weakness for donuts, but at least I remember exactly how bad they are for me every time I eat one...or two...or five...

Damn it, now I want donuts.

What I have a problem with is that you were in a Doctor's waiting room eating a bag of Doritto's and then walked into his office still munching a hand full. There is a time and place for everything and it sounds like in your case maybe you do have a problem.

We have health warning labels on cigarette packets, so I can't see the problem in placing this warning on packets of Doritos and video games at the same time.

Hmmmm, I do think far less people die from playing video games than people die from smoking every year.

That is... an excellent point, some collectors might want to hunt them down though "I just got the new Call of Duty, the special one with "This game might turn you into a lazy [censored] which might lead to your death". So cash." :P

Reminds me of the printed on "store versions" of a game.

No, you're taking it wrong. There's an important reason why https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_opinion#Medicine exists. I'm not saying don't trust professionals, I'm saying that you shouldn't blindly follow someone and should take the time to be informed, especially when it comes to important things like health.

It's not narcissism to ask multiple experts and open a discussion with someone.

I probably should have specified, but of course I don't mean all doctors. I've had good docs, and bad docs. But what I was saying does hold true to many doctors I've met. And as I have previously eluded to, I've met countless doctors. Doctors in all sorts of specialties. That includes doctors across the country and not just ones in my home state.

If you have something you'd like to add to my previous statement then please, don't hesitate.

I dunno..

House would say: "you have become Clinically Obese, your Liver has begun failing, you appear to have Jaundice, and early signs of Scurvy.. goodbye", "well aren't you going to treat me?", "no, not now that I know whats wrong.. start living healthier you Moron".. such a Conversation would make me second guess my life style..
Actually, House is the last person to tell someone to live healthier..

this thread however, has made me second guess my food intake.. I really should start eating a bit healthier, while I love Pasta, Pizza, Pop and fast Food, its probably not the best stuff for me to eat on a daily basis.. Granted, I am not worrying about becoming overweight, I have been Diagnosed since Childhood with an Abnormally fast Metabolism, so even with my terrible eating Habits I'm only around 178 pounds, I am worried about other factors that a poor diet can cause however..
