Has a Doctor told you this?

Post » Fri Dec 05, 2014 10:38 pm

Well today i went to doctors appointment, and i had some Doritos chips in my hand (just to munch will i waited) .. then when i entered into his office he told me that chips were bad and then he gave me a list of how to stay healthy and then ...

he started telling me that playing video games and using computers is bad .. he almost lasted an hour talking about it.

has this happened to you? .. is it really bad? ...

Everything in life is Bad, Also everything in life is Good. The thing is moderation.

Well all junk food is unhealthy, but it's perfectly fine to have occasional snacks if you balance it with healthy food.
The rant about computers being bad seems rather odd.

He was obviously trying to inform you about something though.

If, for example, you are overweight or diabetic, etc, then maybe he was trying to tell you to eat healthier and get more exercise.

Always be sure to ask your doctor why they give the advice they do. It's your health, and you should get all the info about it that you can.

He talked for an hour and you didn't know why? You do realize he's spending valuable time trying to help you?

Well, moderation is important, it's not like a couple of chips or a few gaming sessions will kill you.

Staring into a screen for hours on hours is probably not good for your eyes, so it's good to take a break. As far as the chips go, I eat chips occationally, and I'm in the best shape I've been in a long time if not ever. If you eat chips every day and do nothing but play video games, then obviously your life style is bad for you. Besides, there is always something you can do, that is better than what you are doing, and with the world becoming more digital it's hard to not look into a screen. I don't think video gaming is worse than watching TV etc.

This, partial.

Everything is bad for you no matter what... Too much sunlight can kill you. Too much water can kill you... However, not everything in life is good for you at all. (Poison, for example, isn't good for you at all).

The thing is, knowing what is TRULY bad for you, no matter what, and stay away from that while moderating everything else.

What the doc was saying is that eating Doritos while playing video games causes instant death.

Lol no.

I would've politely informed him that I'll do what I want with my life.

Unless used in antidotes, but that's the rare exception I guess. :P

But yeah, you encounter stuff that is bad for you every day. It's not like everything you get in the store is perfectly clean either with all sorts of crap added to them.

If you go outside you might inhale something that's bad, or slip on the ice and crack your skull open, tons of options. You don't survive life, you can make it longer of course, but yeah, never had my doctor comment on stuff like that. My doctor helps me when I'm, you know, actually sick.

Telling you that video games are bad for you was not really appropriate. He was probably trying to tell you to exercise and didn't go about it in the best way.

Playing video games all day is obviously going to adversely affect your health in the long term but there is nothing wrong with playing a little here and there.

Medical schools do not discuss the topic of video games.... His conclusions were drawn from his own interpretations and his own biases. Just keep that in mind.

You could just as easily run into a doctor that is infatuated with the paleo diet that will tell you that all carbs are terrible for you. That is really just his opinion. This is why evidence based medicine is becoming so important.

I doubt the doctor ever once thought that he could control what a patient did. Advice ≠ force.

If you are at the doctor, then he assumes that you want advice and/or help. He is obligated to help you improve your health, even if the advice is not what you want in your life.
You can ignore it, but he's just doing his job. "Informing" him of how to do his job is a great way to let your doctor know you are wasting his time and he may remove you from his patient list.

Repetitive stress injuries are no joking matter, which is most likely what the doctor was referring to (along with the sedentary lifestyle computers and video games often encourage)

Yep. About the video games she told that the problem only comes when you really play it for hours. But she also said that using too much things with any tipe of screen is bad for the eyes and the brain (can cause violent headaches) but also, reading too much can do the same damage.

I was the under the impression the doctors appointment was for an unrelated matter.
And telling him I'll do what I want with my life isn't telling him how to do his job.

But credit to him for throwing some extra advice into the consultation, but I doubt it needed to last an hour.

I think sitting too much in a chair is bad. Something about having constant back support and weakening the muscles. What I just did a week ago was remove my computer desk, and set my monitor with the speakers along with the keyboard and mouse on different objects, so I can sit on the floor while I'm typing this. No back support = win.

Due to large health issues I've dealt with many doctors and spent a lot of time with them.

Doctors love telling their patients what to do and what not to do. They'll tell you why you shouldn't do something and while discussing it they'll repeat the same information over and over. They enjoy being the one you're taking advice from and displaying their intelligence drives them.

I don't know, my doctor has been pretty straight to the point. Then again he is known as one of the best doctors in town.

True exercise is also important, but one of the good things about sitting on the floor is it's easier for me to transition into other exercises if I want to than if I was in a chair because a chair takes up space also. I like going on walks too but I think if sitting without a chair helps then that's even better.

What amazes me about this topic is that a doctor actually spent a solid hour discussing health issues (as he saw them) with you! My experience is that doctors are heavily books throughout the day so that they are able to devote only a few scant minutes per patient. I believe my various doctors (PCM and a number of specialists) schedule 15min per patient. Total time per visit might exceed this due to time spent with the doctor's nurse/assistant, lab work, X-rays and so on, but the doctor him or herself is pretty pressed for time.

Glad to see many here think for themselves. To many people just listen to what ever someone in a lab coat says. I don't feel like digging it up, but a Cracked article cited a study where they found people won't think much if the information is being delivered by someone in uniform.

Well, when it's simple life style questions you don't need a Phd and stuff to figure it out.
