Has sneak been nerfed?

Post » Tue Dec 13, 2011 10:06 pm

Alright, so, I have 100 sneak, ancient shrouded boots, fortify sneak +20% ring and 20% amulet, and 5 points in the initial perk, but enemies spot me almost immidiately. What am I doing wrong?

Are you avoiding well lit spaces and trying not to knock things over?

Are you walking instead of running, on PC you need to push an extra button to walk slower, and on consoles you hold the thumb stick about halfway wile crouching, never push the stick all the way wile sneaking.

Yes, I know to crouch. I've only been doing it for 34 levels. It did seem though, that after 30 things got much harder.

What Mightylink said, unless you have the perk that makes you move silently, which is worth getting.

Do you use Val's crafting mod? If so and if it's an older version, it may have disabled the enchantments on your shrouded gear. That's what happened to me.

All enemies, or some? Not everything is easy to sneak up on. Those chaurus critters are pretty alert, as are vampires. So are deer.

Until you get the perk that completely eliminates the need to do this, of course.

I'm finding having high Sneak is making things way too easy. With 75 Sneak, I can hide within two millimeters of someone and not have them notice me. You're probably doing it wrong, OP.

No, running vanllia skyrim. No mods at all. I'm walking at about 0.000001 kmph and still getting caught almost instantly.

BTW I can only post once a minute. Forum restriction or something.

Try it without +% sneak gear (someone mentioned this yesterday). Keep muffled boots on, though, if you have them.

Well then, I must have been "doing it wrong" for the previous 30-something levels, and must have gotten lucky all that time. Nothing in my playstyle has changed, other than the fact I'm instantly discovered now.

@Ashiraniir I even tried it naked =P no difference.

This. I've seen around the forums that +% gear actually acts as -% gear when you hit level 100 in the skill. That might be what's killing you.

That is what his boots do; they are enchanted with Muffle.

With around 70 sneak plus a couple of bonuses, I had a lot of trouble sneaking outdoors recently. People would spot me or "hear something" way too often. This was also at night too. Line of site made no difference, and neither did moving or standing still. People were just getting alerted all the time. Indoors, it was easy to kill anyone.

Now, I got sneak up to 100 with all perks, and it is much easier. Still, I can't help but feel like sneaking outside at night was harder that it should have been. You shouldn't need this much sneak skill to make it useful. Maybe the patch screwed something up. I still don't feel like it works 100 percent.

I'm not sure about that, I've tried it sans any sort of clothing and no luck. Besides, don't people with 100 smithing use the smith/alch/enchant boost without problems?

Your sneak skill isn't showing up with red numbers or anything, is it? I remember people talking about a bug where their skills rolled back over to a really low number (most were 0 or 1, one guy got up to 15) once they hit 100.

edit: I mean to say, you could still be experiencing that + something else keeping it displayed as 100.

I saw someone post that smithing boosts actually resulted in a decreased armor rating. I can't confirm that, though.

No, nothing like that. It just seems after I passed 30 everything has become all knowing and omniscient.

Do you have Lydia (or other brute-force companion) with you? She attracts enemies like a laser disco ball, because her Sneak is terrible.

no followers.

Everything was almost cheaply easy before level 32-ish but now it's ridiculous.

I'm playing a stealth character as well — level 41, wearing one +30% Sneak pendant, Sneak skill just hit 90, perk line up to Silence with only 2/5 points spent on the first perk (+5% per perk? No thanks, Bethesda). NPCs generally only notice me if they're very perceptive, it's broad daylight outside or I'm right up in their face.

Are you on the PC? Edit: Ah yeah, you are. If so, you can use the console (UESP page http://uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Console) to temporarily lower your skill level and see if that changes anything. Or it could be a bug introduced by the worst patch in computer gaming history.

Yep, PC. Don't want to use any console commands though, want to keep this save file completely stock. I will probably spawn 10 dragons and 100 thalmor when I'm done with this playthrough and see them fight it out.
