Definitely agree that wood and metal guns have the rustic charm and look better / more appealing.
But for utility and function, the plastic semi-autos are just far superior. They don't degrade and loosen up the way wood/metal guns do, they're more durable, are Significantly lighter (which is a really big deal with handguns), and hold up better against water and deterioration. So there are many reasons why polymer guns are more popular now, and yes they do look almost exactly like Toy guns these days. Still for personal carry the plastic guns are king, but for looks and appeal, metal/wood any day.
I Loved the combat shotgun in Fo3, but felt that it was a little Too powerful. In my first play-throughs I ended-up falling back to the combat shotgun in most mutant or close-quarter situations because it was so powerful. I suspect we will def. see combat shotguns again, but hopefully they will do more realistic damage (based on ammo of course).
