I saw the Wait mechanic in a video today. When you're sitting, a prompt (Y) to wait shows on-screen. Clearly the reason for the change is limited controller buttons (for consoles, but also for PC players using a game pad).

I don't think this is a terrible way to do it. It might be an occasional pain in the ass out in the middle of nowhere (if for instance you want to wait for dark to attack a raider camp or something), but in the case of waiting for a shop to open, there is usually a chair or bench nearby.

This follows a general trend of making the controls for less-often-used functions contextual. You only need to lean when you're aiming from behind cover, so that's when leaning works. Holding your breath is only relevant when you're aiming a scoped weapon, so the function only becomes available in that situation. Sitting is a reasonable way to create a context for waiting. It may not be perfect, but I think it will work.

They could have put it other places so I don't think this is "clearly the reason". It would make a lot of sense to put it in either the pause menu (since it paused the game anyway) or an option in the pipboy

I feel like waiting anywhere could have been very easy for Bethesda to do even with limited buttons on a controller - just point at a wall or floor or furniture and hold an assigned button for a couple seconds to bring up the wait window, that way it wouldn't be done on accident and waiting would still be able to be done anywhere. Meh, mods can do something about it though for those who care.

They also could have left it exactly as it was, except there weren't enough buttons on the controller, so they had to change it in some way. Sure, it could have gone into the pause menu or the Pipboy, but that just supports the fact that they had to move it somewhere due to the lack of a button available for permanent assignment.

I'm not pointing fingers or 'blaming' consoles, I'm just pointing out that they're trying to use the available buttons for functions you use all the time. Waiting is an infrequent function, so like others, it has been made contextual. At least they didn't remove it entirely.

If they wanted to it could have been as easy as holding select or back 3 seconds instead of changing POV. It was clearly a gameplay choice to change things. They are using long holds for other things so why not something as simple as wait?

Holding the POV button already has a function--it allows you to rotate the camera around without turning your character.

All of these multi-purpose buttons, press and hold to do something different, etc, are about fitting all the functions into the limited number of buttons available on a game pad. That's just a fact. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing, mind you. Having an unlimited number of keys on a keyboard can lead to overly complicated control schemes. Look at any shooter from the early 2000s, and you have so many key assignments for leaning, crouching, going prone, blah blah blah... It frankly makes the game harder to play.

Necessity is the mother of invention, and the need to reduce the key-count has led to some nice innovations, like contextual leaning for example. It can go too far, like the one-button-does-all controls in Gears of War, but for the most part, I've seen many good control schemes come about since most games have become multi-platform.

Yeah I guess we'll just see how it plays out. But again, if they wanted to keep 'wait anywhere' they could have implemented it in either pause or pip boy

There's a slight difference between trying to fall asleep on cold concrete and just sitting on the ground or leaning against a wall, or pacing back and forth or reading a magazine and waiting for a few hours. It really doesn't make sense to restrict waiting to furniture. I doubt they would remove that.

Yep, I don't know about anyone else but my fondest memories of Fallout 3 were all those times I was out in the middle of the Wastes with no furniture in sight - just standing there waiting. ;)

(Eh, half the time I actually made any use of the mechanic I'd find a nice place to do my waiting anyway. I'm not bothered by this at all. Why they made those changes is just conjecture and its not like its a huge game changer either way, to my mind.)

I did use wait a lot, generally when a shop was closed waiting for it to open but so long as they have a bench or something outside sounds like it would be fine.

In some playthroughs I used to find somewhere to sleep at night, crouching on the floor or whatever but guess I always have to find a bed now.

Wait function is now in the environment, you can wait if you sit down on a chair, sofa, bed, w/e, as long as your buns found a spot to push down on, you can wait. It's honestly not that much of a game changer, since most people wait in populated areas anyhow.

Could it be on an sub menu like the favorites in Skyrim?

Asks because wait it pretty much needed if they have npc with schedules like shops are closed at night.

You do realize that it's turned on by holding the pip-boy button, right? This is how it's been since Fallout 3, it hasn't had its own button or key.

This is my only real concern about the change in the mechanic. Hey, maybe there is a place to buy a lawn chair?

Well modder can just make a folding chair that you can take with you.

Heck why stop there, make folding chair and bring a cooler box where you store your nukas while you wait, and when your ready you can tell dogmeat to go F some stuff up.

But NV had sleeping bags script so who knows.

Oh wow,dind't know it existed.

Truthfully I don't use mods that changes things or add things in the game,I always try to play it a much default mechanics.

The only mods that I do download are textures, but funcionalities I don't.

It's old and outdated for a long time now. Other mods did better and much more complex stuff. Still it's nice being nostalgic near the release of a new game.
