I hate Daggerfall...

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 4:39 am

I liked Daggerfall's music so much I dropped quite a bit of it into Oblivion. Of course, Oblivion lacks the nice weather-based music idea. I considered trying to script up something to fix that, but although I love Bethesda's games, I hate their tools.

Daggerfall is a fun game. Not sure I really know why all the time, but I'm not worried about that. :D

What? Why do you press F F F F F F?

You attack just like in every other game, only this time you use the right mouse button and you drag.

One of the things about Daggerfall that makes it more fulfilling than Oblivion is the fact that there is NO hand-holding. You make a mistake, TOUGH. Your actions have real CONSEQUENCES, and every time you make a tough choice you never do so lightly.

Being a heroic warrior shouldn't be EASY, and in Daggerfall it isn't.

In terms of raw RPG goodness, Daggerfall = so much WIN.

I have... no idea why you're pressing F so much. To attack, you draw your weapon, then you hold the right mouse button and slash left/right/up/down/downleft/downright. For a bow, you just click the right mouse button while aiming. I have my F set to drawing weapons like in the other TES games, so I don't remember what it is at default.

Just go into the options, change it to view mode so you can mouse look, then mess around with the controls until you get them how you like. You can pretty much mimic oblivion or morrowind's control scheme fairly easily. There are just a few things, like casting, that are inherently different.

Really? I honestly never felt that kind of pressure in this game. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, since I find it getting easier as I figure out what works and what doesn't work.

tahts b/c u r l33t. :D

Seriously, it is an indication that you have greater than average gaming skill. (I do the l3375p3@k thing because, well, that was popular back when Daggerfall was new. That and I went on a Megatokyo binge a few weeks ago, and haven't been the same since.)

I remember dying horribly in that starter dungeon over and over and over. I loved the big huge dungeons, although the layout was a *little* screwy. haha.

I wonder how many dungeons have never been explored in that game?

Man, as awesome and huge as this game is... Those dungeons are really discouraging... "go to this place..." he says. " Kill a lycanthrope!" He says.... " Good for the career" he says...

... Old graphics means that it can take some time to become immersed, but it will come given a good-enough game.
I second this ^. Shoot, I was recently thinking about going back and playing Ultima Underworld. (What? Tunnels underground pitch-black w/o a torch or lantern? Must prepare for an endeavor and carry your own fuel & light-source? No...)

... Now wait til you get to the main quest. It's sick...I'm telling you, it will ruin the MQ's for most other RPG's and destroys those in MW and Oblivion.

The political intrigue, the incredible interconnectedness of people, guilds, gods, enemies, allies, everything. Love it.

Given that I am old enough that I own copies of Ultima Underground 1 and 2 (and Ultima IV and VII!) and the Realms of Arkania trilogy and the Lands of Lore games and The Quest for Glory anthology, I am not particularly bothered if PC gaming is dying! Good times! We need a major PC retro gaming site, don't we!?

So I create a Rogue character that can't get spells from the Mages Guild, so of course the first dungeon quest requires underwater swimming! I did 4 huge dungeons as a Battle Mage WITH water walking and water breathing spells, and never had to use them! Daggerfall, I hate you!!!! :)

And as an aside, if you're character hasn't enough magic to join the Mages Guild, you're stuffed as far as I can see, as with no recall, heal, levitation (or slow falling) and water breathing, I don't see how you can survive the early levels!

(See my post above!) Iam now seriously thinking of giving up!!! Because of above, I start a new game, pretty much breeze through the starter cave after the 6th time (except for the skeleton warrior!), but what do I get alongside the normalgiant bat, imp and rat at the exit room? 2 Rouges right in front of the exit!!! I have tried and tried and am never going to beat those two Rogues! So frustrating!!! Now beginning to really hate Daggerfall!!

Not using magic doesn't make the game harder. I've never used magic or magical items in any of my games. :P

When I say those two rogues are right in front of the exit, I mean right in front of the exit!

So I start a game again, get through this time, off load my armour in Daggerfall stores and go to the Mages Guild to sign in. I get some training and forgetting the 3 hours it took, leave the Guild only to realise it's 8 in the evening - and what's right in front of me - a ghost! I quickly dart back into the Guild intending to loiter until dawn and what do i get in every corner of the Mages Guild in that damn Daggerfall City...?! That's right 'can't rest there are enemies nearby!' So I have the game currently shrunk to the taskbar waiting for dawn or the ghost to go away!! So far it's been about 40 minutes and it's still 3am!!

Why does this game hate me?!

Well, just about every NPC you ask for news will tell you not to walk the streets of Daggerfall at night. "Outgoing" is the answer :P

Yes, but if the game knows the ghost isn't going to come in, then it should allow the player to loiter!!!!

That's because you can still hear the ghost. I actually find it immersive that you hear the creatures pursuing you.

What you'll need to do is get out, run away and lose track of the ghost. Keep running in a straight line until you can have the option to rest. That'll confirm if the ghost is still running after you or not.

As for the rogues, run up to them so they engage you in close combat, then run past them on their flanks and get to the exit. They should be confused enough and not even try to hit you.

Thanks for the tips. I gave up on the rogue thing as even trying to run past got me killed, I had to push them out of the way as they covered the exit.

Anyway, with the ghost thing, just waited 50 minutes (real time) for dawn to come... And since then have completed (on my 6th try!) my first dungeon quest! Only because I made the right turning straight off and found the Astronoche in the first 'zone'! I left as soon as I killed the sad guy as the dungeon had werewolves and warriors!!!! That's a bit much for a level 2!

Wonderful post and I'm happy you've been able to experience DF. Now wait til you get to the main quest. It's sick...I'm telling you, it will ruin the MQ's for most other RPG's and destroys those in MW and Oblivion. Somehow, the music in DF immerses me more than the music from MW and Oblivion also. Such a great game. Congrats and enjoy.

A few years ago there was a remake project going on, and a very talented fella composed some of the Daggerfall music for it. They're still online here:

http://www.rhmusic.net/dfmusicproject/music.html

Just listen to 'Treading Winter' at the very bottom. I STILL get goosebumps at a certain part in it... when you hear it, you will know exactly where. If you're nostalgic or very much enjoying the music of Daggerfall for the first time, you may find yourself with them too.

I really, really wish he was able to complete all of the major pieces from the game.

I loved those songs, downloaded them some years back when I put as many Daggerfall MP3s that I could find in my Morrowind music folder (I've also got lots of other music in that folder including ambient, medieval, folk, etc)

Love the opening post.
