I hate enemies who use ice spike

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 6:05 pm

My warrior is a complete free kill to these guys, they just walk backwards constantly spamming it, and I'm slowed to a snails pace, they can comfortably kite me around and kill me before I can even touch them. I can get off one single shout, and if that hits a ward then I'm completely screwed.

It should be a little better once resistances are fixed, but how is a sword and board supposed to fight this? Archery is out of the question, I will die long before they do.

I guess with the 50% elemental protection from the Blocking perk and maybe the Atronach Standing Stone for Absorb Magicka 50%? I guess you have to wait until they fix that resistance as well.

Archery is actually quite capable of dealing with them as long as you keep a good distance and have some archery skill points. That said I have the same issue on my 2 hander orc but at least you can kill them fairly quickly with a 2 handed weapon. there is the perk that reduces all magic damage done to you by 505 when blocking as well. Another option is to enchant a bow with magicka drain or find a staff to use up all their magicka. Either way i feel like that slow is ridiculously strong except when i use it on my mage haha. Does our version of the spell have the same slow effect?

Yeah I'm so looking forwards to it. I shouldn't need Atronach stone though since I'm a Nord, so I should theoretically get 100% frost resistance once 1.3 is out. Only thing is that I don't believe the Nord racial stacks with the blocking perk.

Well archery is a no go for me, dodging those things is hard since they come at you fast, and even harder to dodge once you are slowed, especially when they are dual casting them.

The biggest problem for me is the slowing effect though, there is no way I can think of to break it. If I could just remove the slow effect with an enrage or a potion, and get close enough to wring their scrawny little caster necks..

Instead of running straight at them, try strafing?

Those ice shards are slower than frozen molasses. Fireballs are harder to dodge.

xD Yeah frost mages. I did some pvp on mine and I felt like something was definitely being overlooked because of how easymode they were. Completely untouchable faceroll class.

And to add to the topic....

Anybody complaining about AI hasn't fought enough casters at once yet. Freaking vampires are resurrecting random dead dudes and you can't even regroup because the longer you take the more life they get back from their drains.

The reward for Peryite's quest is extremely useful for sword and boarders.

Easy thing to do is just summon a deadra or something, get the mage distracted and go attack it.

I go into Ethereal form and then bash the crap outta them with my shield and follow up with power attacks, normally I can get the ward down easily without take a spike

Carry a scroll or two of Summon Frost Atronach. That'll ruin their day real fast!

Yeah my anti-mage ring collection is useless atm.

However ice spike is pretty easy to dodge at long to mid range so I close like that until the barrage is too much to avoid.

Then I whirlwind towards them, powerbash their faces and don't let them recover, stay right in their faces with staggering power attacks and bashes.

I don't like using shouts tbh but they get the job done while resists are busted.
You could use ice form to give you enough time to close on them, but ice form is way too 'magey' for me.

I suspect you prefer to not directly use magic, including shouts.
But imo the game is cheating with these broken resists... until they're fixed I see no dishonour in "cheating" back.

My mage's strategy to dealing with mages: notice the type of mage the enemy is, be it pyro, cryo, etc; conjure an atronach of the corresponding element; the enemy mage will be "smart" enough to stop casting now useless spells and attempt to melee with the atronach instead; win.

I'm a mage and the only real threatening thing to me are archers.

See how they implemented a combat triangle there?

I've never had a problem... just use a bow. Creating any character with no ranged abilities is just silly.

Mages should be easy to dodge if you have enough space to move, they hit much harder than arrows but travel much slower. If you want a way to deal with them at range get the archery perk that staggers enemies when you hit them, should give you a little time to move closer each time.

The only real problem with fighting mages is long thin corridors where you don't have space to dodge...

Archery would be a good solution if enemies couldn't dodge incoming arrows. Moving around, I would understand; sprinting on the side like they were wearing wheels under the shoes is totally unrealistic
