I hate Markarth

Post » Tue Feb 16, 2016 4:58 am

House is not too bad immediately right after you enter the city, up the steps to the next level, then first right up the steps again.

Oh yes I remember that I woke up in this temple I'd never been in before in this city I'd never been in before and it was night so couldn't see a darn thing and didn't have a clue where I was going. And its a long way down. Fun times! Think I've had a grudge against Markarth ever since.

I always liked Markarth, loved the Dwemer architecture. Maybe spend a little more time getting to know it? Windhelm is my least favorite city. Brr!

I agree, Markarth is my favourite city. Love the whole feel of the city, how's it's built into the mountain. It's also one of the few 'cities' that actually feels the right size.

It didn't take me long to learn to navigate Markarth. I like it because of its verticality and the waterfalls and dwemer architecture. Some of the inhabitants leave much to be desired though . . .

100 hours into Oblivion and I'm STILL getting lost in the imperial city.

OT: As strange as this may sound.....I've no opinion on Markarth. The only thing that comes to mind are those stone beds....great for...fun, but sleeping? Nah man, that's gotta hurt like hell.

Aw, I like Markarth! I think it was Vlindrel Hall (sp?) was the first ever home I purchased. But, by the Nine, Eltrys is so annoying. Leave me alone, I just wanna sell some junk at Arnliefs!

The Cidnha mine quest always made me feel lousy, regardless if which side I took. Solution? Kill everyone. If you do it right you can get both quest rewards. But really the reward is in killing all of those degenerates.

The Reach as a whole, I agree. Watching the sun come up with the layers of fog all around... Breathtakingly beautiful.

This playthrough, I did buy Vindrel Hall, for the second time. I've been spending more time in The Reach than usual, so I thought a base of operations would be a good idea :)

Markarth is actually my favourite city in Skyrim. I actually love it for the multilevel/vertical build and I love the keep as well. I think it's the most aesthetic, personally.

I'm not a fan of the dwarven architecture, but Markarth is a cool looking city. It's a shame the bad people elements overwhelm the good. My characters don't like to go there, so only when they have to, even though I like the Reach in general.

I'm fairly neutral on Markarth itself, as was said they city is full of annoying and downright distasteful (heh) people but I love the dwarven ruins/city set pieces and the vertical design with all the waterfalls is quite lovely to look at so it kind of balances out between those factors I suppose. The force-greet quest NPC along the main path to/from the keep doesn't help matters much, I have to say.

What I dislike is how the city is placed geographically in the game world, like it's in a pocket corner of the map. There's only 1 way in/out (I use fast travel rarely) and the lack of any surrounding explorable territory around it makes the city feel extremely isolated and cut off from the gameworld. If you want to get to the city, you always have to take the main route up to the main gate past the farm and then the carriage and then the stables, where as for all other cities/towns there are alternate paths or entrances or both - sometimes quite a lot of each. It makes using Markarth as a main base where I have my home (I've only purchased Vindral Hall once in all my time with this game) and primary storage very annoying to the point that I never spend more time there than I have to, which is kind of a shame as visually the city is quite striking.

No, never had that problem. I always found Markarth to be easy to navigate. Maybe I'm just used to Vivec, which is litterally a bunch of copy-pasted buildings where you usually need the map to even have a clue which one you are at. Unless you are "clever" and only go between them by the boats, which lets you keep a lot more control of where you are at any given time.

Yep. Winterhold is probably my most disliked *city*. For one, you can take a cart there, but you can't leave on one... so if you're like me (a player who simply will not fast travel), it's a real pain since all roads from there are not only the most treacherous (snow cats, wispmothers, vampire sorties, etc.) but it's also a very long trek to anything useful. Dawnstar is one place I very rarely visit at all. But I'll probably get to the point where I can purchase land to build a house on in this playthrough. It's a real pain as well due to location.

Yeah Markarth is probably the most creative city in the game. I don't see how you couldn't like it

I actually love Markarth. It's so big, it truly feels like a city. Like Tdroid I'm used to navigating Vivec City, so Markarth is nothing.

At least you can get a boat there. I rarely visit there because theres literally almost nothing there of any value other than the odd quest. And other spoilerish things.

Same here. It's my least favorite city of any TES game. I hated the fact that the city was really corrupt, and also that at the end of the mine quest, a bunch of random people/guards get killed. That, with the structure of the place, led to me probably spending 1 hour in total in it. I actually had expected it to be my favorite city.
