I hate it when my PC has to go underwater...

Post » Thu Jun 20, 2013 11:22 am

... even with an enchanted item that prevents drowning. There's just something about the murky depths and lack of visibility that always keeps me away from the water. Waterfalls and quick river crossings are ok, but the ocean is nasty. I'm sure I've missed tons of treasure because of this.

So what did I stumble on the other day? Ahzidal's boots of waterwalking. Yes, walking; I almost chucked 'em 'cause I thought it said 'waterbreathing' but no! Tried them out first chance I got and they are awesome fun. Just run on top of the water between the islands on the north coast of Solstheim, totally awesome fun. I love these boots - what a great idea for the DLC. Just when I think there's nothing new, bang! something amazing pops up. Nice work Bethesda.

Spoiler
What are those giant Nirnroot plants on one of the islands? I picked like six of seven and inventory shows something like 20!

Not really new, Water walking was a thing in Both Oblivion and Morrowind.

Still, I'm greatful to have it back

just wish it was a normal enchantment like before. Ahzidal's boots are cool and all, but they don't compare to my Jesus Boots in Oblivion xD

Open water is my #1 fear.

Even in video games.

I think it's just something cool for the player to find like Lord Tusk.

I love the underwater exploration. I'm not sure if it's the feeling that I'm going somewhere "forbidden" by nature, or that I just want to see someplace that was once above water, but is now in a ruined state and I want to play archaeologist.

99.99% of the game is above water, and the underwater segments add a change of pace/scenery to the game. Instead of walking, I'm swimming, and there's usually some kind of treasure buried underneath, just waiting to be found.

I've also played many games that have water and flooded areas, but don't allow them to be explored. I like how the Elder Scrolls games allow the player to get wet, and don't use water as a "barrier" to seperate areas from another.

If you only dive down very slightly the murky effect wont be there and you can down to the bottom. Really helps with Pilgrims Trench.

Woah!

Why on earth would you put your PC underwater?

Yeah, the visibility is nil down beneath the waves. I wish there was some sort of enchantment or something to light the way; candle light works a bit but isn't as good as Oblivion's spells. I also miss my water walking spells and enchantments; Azhidal's boots are great and all, but why couldn't it have been an enchantment we could learn? Did I also mention I miss acrobatics and being able to skip across the water's surface like a school girl wearing full Daedric armor?

It helps to keep the PC clean and cool during those long gaming sessions. Try it out!

 Next you'll tell him to change the oil for his PC regularly and make sure he puts in fresh anti-freeze.

Skyrim is my first ES game so waterwalking was a total revelation.

Right - there's no reference to them as a distinct DB ingredient in either the wiki or third-party pages. I wonder if there are any more around if they are unique to this single location.

I know how you feel about the creepiness of the water. I find it terrifying.

I had to do a quest recently that had the issue of navigating over the ice flows in the far north. Jumping over the gaps in the ice was absolutely terrifying, what with how deep the water is beneath them. It didn’t help that I was completely immersed in the RP at the time.

Leena was going through some emotional issues at the time. She was very unsure of herself and of her quest, she was in an unfamiliar place all alone and she’d been navigating the icy waters all day and was frozen to the bone. One false step and she wasn’t sure she’d be able to get back to shore.

I was feeling every terrified moment right along with her…it’s times like that, that I realize how much I love this game :3

As much as I hate the creepiness of deep water, I would never want it any other way. Even the murkiness is just right. It’s not where we belong, and it’s not a place we’re meant to master.

Actually, you aren't. There's treasure scattered around on islands, but the ocean is barren.

I just recently did the very first quest to get into the Stormclock rebellion which has you swimming in the frigid waters north of Windhelm. I found this ridiculous that there was no way to get out to the small island without swimming. I also had frostfall running so just hopping in the water was not an option. Really made it a serious problem if you literally had to swim or ever fall into the water.

That's not entirely true. There are a few sunken ships and an entire location underwater.

There are more. I won't tell you where, though, for your sake.

Oh cool, something to hunt for, thanks! Too bad my Alchemy is at 100 already. I'll stock up just in case I flip it to Legendary and redistribute the perks. So is the advantage just the quantity, they are essentially the same as the regular ones? I haven't taken the perk where eating a plant gets you all four characteristics so I'd have to experiment and all my alchemical recipe lists are a mess right now.
