Hats vs Hoods

Post » Mon Jan 17, 2011 7:18 am

How about adding big pointy wizard hats in Skyrim? The same old 'hoods' from Oblivion got boring and it always made me feel like my character was evil...

(note: I tried a search on this subject but there were too many various topics to add to)

Hats feel more like some cheesy fantasy game, unless a very characteristic person wears them... like Gandalf :D
Hoods are cool. I like them. Should have a bigger variety in looks than in Oblivion though :)

Why did hoods make you feel evil?

Also, aren't wizards with big pointy hats just a little too silly at this point? They were fine with Daggerfall, but I like to think the series has gotten a bit too serious for that type of hat.

I think the hood widening down at the neck area made the character look evil
I want more of a tight looking hood

Bit sad this, but being an xbox player, I never gave a damn about mods, except I really missed some kind of circlet or tiara for my Altmer sorceress, hoods are ok, not perfect, and obviously helmets are no good. Ah well.

It all depends on how they implement hair. In Oblivion, we got hoods because there's no way to conform hair to headgear - it's one or the other. The only alternate forms of headgear possible in Oblivion are things that fit under the existing hair meshes (like tiaras), things that fit over them (there are a few hat mods - all the hats are enormous so that they don't clip the hair), things that have meshes that combine headgear and hair (which limits you to the hair that's part of the mesh) or things that, like hoods, completely replace the hair.

It's possible to set it up so that the hair mesh remains intact and conforms to a piece of headgear put on top of it, but it's relatively difficult and resource-expensive to do it. It remains to be seen if that's done in Skyrim, though there's at least one screenie that was floating around a while back that hints at it.

Hoods look much better than hats in my opinion, but I agree... there should definitely be variety.

I could go for a point hat if it also comes with some kind of cloth that covers my face up to my nose so you can just see my eyes in between the cloth and hat...and make it all raggedy looking.

I personally want hats because I want to both see my stealth-mage's hair while wearing enchantable head gear at the same time. It's like how I was annoyed in Fallout3 to go through the trouble of designing my avatar's face, but then to have the face blocked off with a full helmet through most of the game.

Cheesy wizard hats, hoods, fancy hats, fancy wizard hats, crowns, tiaras, more fancy wizard hats.
We need everything!

That's what National Pride looks like in these parts.
On topic, another thing that mods did that we need more than fancy hats : necklaces, collars or chokers, for if they haven't sorted out that shockingly awful neck-body join nonsense.

I like the hoods. Hate the stereotypical pointy wizard hat in every fantasy game. Not saying I don't want them in there but I certainly don't want hoods out.

Honestly I just want to make a proper assassin :) Need a good (armored) robe.

I'd love some jeweled headwear. Tiaras, circlets, etc. Would appreciate a variety of hats and hoods too, of course! Even if they look a bit eccentric or utterly mundane, it'd be nice to at least see NPCs wearing them.

I agree with this, I wouldn't use it but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be in. I also definitely agree that we need some good assassin style clothing/armor.
