Hats, let's talk about Hats...

So let's talk about hats, and helmets, and really anything to go on top of a character's head. What hats do you like best, on which type of characters? Do you even have your characters wear hats? Having a hard time finding a specific hat?

Right now I'm playing just my second pro-NCR (for the time, still haven't bothered going into New Vegas at all), character, and I'm sort of forming him to be one of their best. Which means a Ranger, but really he's more of just a BA outdoorsman who knows how to survive and use both modern (excluding laser or plasma) weapons, and primitive melee weapons.

To go with his red scarf ranger outfit (which luckily doesn't disguise him as NCR,) I've been looking for the Tan Ranger hat, with the brim folded upwards. So far I've only been able to find on dead or alive Rangers, the Brown Ranger hat, Grey Ranger hat, and the Campaign hat you see all the ones in the Ranger Combat Armor wearing. But I haven't been able to find the Tan one. To show which one I mean, it's http://images.wikia.com/fallout/images/5/5c/Ranger_tan_hat.png one.

I haven't been able to find it on any Ranger, at any station or NCR held area. Not even out in the wasteland, have I been able to find one. So for me, regarding this hat, where do you suggest I look and likely find it?

I feel like most of the hats in both New Vegas and Fallout 3 look odd. They just don't seem to fit quite right, either being too big or sitting to high or something. This isn't helped by most character's goofy posture, especially when carrying rifles. I tend to stick with bandanas.

I hate hats, both in real life and games. I look dumb in hats, and in games they typically block the hair, which is usually one of the things unique to your character.

Ulysses' Facemask is a nice alternative.

Character-wise, I also carry around one of those cowboy hats that the Courier wears in the opening and the Honest Hearts trailer, but again that's more for my Courier Six character specifically. The same hat showed up in the opening and in the Honest Hearts trailer, so I just decided "oh that's the Courier's hat" and wore it sometimes. :P

Other than that, just hats related to the faction the character supports (BoS, NCR and Legion mostly), or none at all.

My courier is usually a light armor sniper and I wear the classic pack Vault 13 armored jumpsuit most of the game. I like a desperado cowboy hat early on, then I switch to Boone's NCR beret later and I usually stick with it for the +5 critical for the rest of the game. Both those hats match the armor nicely

For Veronica I love giving her a Combat Armor Helmet Mk 2 because the face visor looks cool, and it is a good aesthetic match for any medium or heavy armor and it's good DT (5) as well. (Later on I give Veronica the T-51b Power Armor Helmet to match her Brotherhood Power Armor, but that takes longer to get.)

When I hire Cass and Boone I usually just leave their default hats on them. They both look really good in Riot Gear type armors with their own default hats. Raul usually gets Combat Armor (with that helmet) because he's not stealthy. Arcade usually gets a pre-war hat, it suits him better than a cowboy hat or helmet.

In really tough fights like Quarry Junction or the Battle of Hoover Dam though, whatever companion I have gets the best armor they can wear. That's either T-51b Power Armor in Veronica's case, or else the best non-factioned power or combat armor I have, along with the best helmet.

But day to day I go for style over substance.

Normally, I don't use hats for my characters, or helmets for that matter. For my current guy though (attempted resurrection of a long dead character) he wears an old cowboy hat and (currently,) reinforced leather armor. http://img801.imageshack.us/img801/8063/screenshot72q.jpg is the only shot I have of him in his hat atm (vats shot)

IRL, I treat hats like American Express, never leave home without it...usually a Cincinnati Reds ball cap.

I love the park ranger hat. Almost always fits my outfits.
