I have 171268 Magicka points

This is kind of embarrassing, but I have this level-38 character with an insane amount of magicka points. I've just checked all my old save games and this has been increasing steadily to this ridiculous amount. The thing is, I'm not a heavy magic user, and even though i'd noticed that something was wrong with my MP, I didn't really care about it till now... I would like to "normalize" this situation, so to speak, and especially know where it comes from.

So my stats show 171268 / 450 MP, and it's not even highlighted in green (i.e. not considered as a bonus).
In the magic effects list, the only thing affecting MP is the Mundane Heritage ability (from Race Balancing Project - I play an Imperial), which is supposed to give me 50 bonus points (not 170000 ;) ). There's nothing about Magicka Base Multiplier or anything; my intelligence is 90 (which is consistent with the 450 points I should have - RBP's multiplier is 5).

The only mods I'm using which affect Magicka (I think) are RBP, LAME, and Supreme Magicka (all latest version of course). I used to use Midas but discarded it some time ago. I have a full FCOM install and Realistic Leveling with default settings. This is the full list (nothing exotic in there):

I would really appreciate if someone could shed some light on this... Is there even a console command to set your MP? (but even so, I think this would keep on increasing if I level up...)

And does the number you see match your actual magicka? As in, what does GetAV Magicka return? The fact that it says 171268 / 450 (as opposed to 171268 / 171268) is an anomaly on its own.

I've seen the same happen with health in the Companion Neeshka mod where I and others ended up with 4537/250 health points for example. It was impossible to fix, at least by normal means (console etc). Bringing health back below 250 wouldn't stop it from raising above that value when casting a heal spell for example. It has long been fixed (so no worries, the mod is safe to use), but the problem was caused by script using modav to adjust player health. I can't remember the exact details, but I guess you could have the same issue here - a script that uses modav to adjust the magicka value.

I would not be surprised if the logic limiting your magicka to its max value doesn't allow it to continue increasing after you have broken the ceiling the first time. The display shows an enhanced maximum as well as the enhanced current value if you have any bonus, and you say the max looks right. There are a few known problems with using ModAV in scripts that could account for this getting started, but I don't quite understand how it keeps going up, unless it's normal regeneration not noticing it's past your cap because you're too far over for the math to work right. For example, if the code compares shorts (max value 32767) then you may have a number that looks negative as far as the test is concerned, so of course that would be below the limit.

Player.ModAV should be able to reset it, provided you know the real current value. That 171268 might only be the least significant digits of a much larger number that's too big to display. I'd try reducing by the 170818 difference to see if it leaves you at 450/450 i.e. Player.ModAv Magicka -170818 and re-check. If it won't do it all at once, you may have to pull off smaller chunks. I suspect SetAV won't touch the current value, but you could also try Player.SetAV Magicka 450 to see if it re-checks the "new" cap.

If any of that works, you still have to find out what broke it and prevent it happening again.

Edit: Reading Phitt's reply tells me you're not going to get a permanent fix for this without tracking down the source.

yeah, it's weird, isn't it? I actually have all those magicka points (basically my magicka bar never goes down). GetAV Magicka gives me 172210,80 (it's gone up a bit since the the OP - why I don't know...).

anyway, i'm not really expecting someone to find the answer, it just looks too bizarre, but I was wondering if anyone else had already had that problem ...

Yep, I had the same thing happen, with a rather similar setup, not long ago. That was one of the reasons I ditched SM in the end.

Though, in retrospect, perhaps I could've cleaned the plugins or something. Oh well.

I don't remember if this is a problem that stays with the saved game even after the mod that caused it is removed. Maybe Phitt will remember.

The effect of a scripted ModAV can only be undone by that mod, if I read the description right, so you may need a fixed version to undo it.

Fixed! Thank you Ghastley for the suggestions.

When I tried setav 450, I suddenly had 800 magicka points... :brokencomputer: For some reason, it was 350 points above the "normal" value, and so was always above the cap, and therefore kept on increasing. Setav 100 fixed it! I should have thought of it...

I have no idea what caused this initially though.

Sorry to resurect this thread but I got some new info and would very much appreciate some help on this.

So I found out the cause for my char's magicka points going over the cap: enchanted items. As soon as I equip an item enchanted with "restore magicka", my magicka points will go above the limit and increase steadily. If I remove the item, the magicka stops increasing.

I tried starting a new game and going to the testing hall to equip such an item, and this DOES NOT happen, with the same LO as my current game. This proves ghastley was right: somehow my current game was corrupted by a malfunctioning script from a mod that is no longer there.

A likely culprit would be supreme magicka, but I've toyed with it (uninstalled it from within the game, installed older version, disabled scripts) and it doesn't help. And the current version works fine with the new save game.

I know this is quite a helpless situation but does anyone have an idea about how to salvage this game? Of course the easiest way is to not equip those items, but you know how it is, fixing things is a hobby in itself. :)
