I have been converted!

well i decided to play oblivion with a new character since the todd howard podcast of skyrim and i decided, unlike my previous 3 years of playing the game, i would not fast travel. Today while not fast travelling I found a hidden road leading away from cloud top. I followed it and it went on for a long time past a really beautiful ayleid ruin, past the hameaus mora? daedric statue, past echo cave and on to bruma. Now i have never encountered a more beautiful road/route in oblivion than that road.I really enjoyed just walking up it and looking at the scenery.

So i have decided on my first playthrough of Skyrim i am not going to fast travel at all(unless i'm in a rush).

I try to walk as much as possible in Oblivion (riding a horse is annoying and doesn't earn me any athletics points), but when it comes to things such as selling stolen good I rather fast travel to Bruma than walking there after every heist in Imperial City.

I will probably do the same in Skyrim, whenever I feel like it I'll be walking, but if I don't stand walking I'll just fast travel. The great thing with fast travel is that you can easily jump from dungeon to dungeon and sell things in the city without having to walk the same way over and over again. That way you can continue dungeon crawling much faster.

Have they said that you won't be able to fast travel to new destinations? I hope so, people who do that don't know what they're missing! :foodndrink:

Fast travel to a destination is only available once you have discovered it. I agree that a lot will be missed if you use fast travel once you have that destination, I use it once I am sure I have covered everything I am likely to see on a particular trip, or if I am in a rush to get a quest done - otherwise walking and wandering is great. :)

You can see Skyrim from near that road too, just look north and think 'soon'.
Wandering is where it's at, there should be more unmarked locations, there were some in OB and FO, but a few rewards for exploring off the beaten track are always welcome.

No idea. Fast travel to Places You've Already Been is all the info we have.

Yeah, same here really hoping Skyrim will continue the Elder Scrolls' run of stunning scenery and the ability to go out and make your own story

It would be better if you started the game and had to find the towns to establish the map markers. It felt funny in Oblivion when the Emperor was like "Go to Weynon Priory" and I could just warp straight there despite just popping out of jail.

Most quests you cant fast travel to the location , only if youve discovered it.
Also You dont HAVE to fast travel even if its implemented Its a choice y'know

I think they've said it's different this time round - IIRC they've mentioned that animals may be territorial, or if wolves have caught some prey, they'll stay and eat/guard that rather than go after you. I believe it's been said that giants won't necessarily attack you either.
It was also mentioned in OXM that "you can engage a dragon whenever you see one simply by pelting it as it flies past, but you'd better make sure you're ready for the fight", which suggests that unless you make a nuisance of yourself, they might just leave you alone and go about their business.

[Double Edit] Found another quote:

"Rather than initiating a Benny Hill-style chase every time you wander near the local wildlife, many of the creatures will simply ignore you unless you give them reason to attack."

I would like it if they offered alternative transportation methods to fast travel that cost money, but they probably won't. Maybe someone will mod it, but it would be nicer if they could implement it in the vanilla version.

A Morrowind transportation system mod will probably be one of the first we'll see, seeing how many people seem to want it.
If I have a decent mic by then, I might help with voice acting, so we can get a fully functional mod from the start.

It could be a good idea if we start up a "team" and plan work before Skyrim is released.

Fast travel really ruins the experience of travelling for me. It's a personal preference though I guess.
It's kinda sad Bethesda hasn't changed this in Skyrim though...
It seems to be a beautiful landscape. But fast travel encourages people to skip it, especially the casuals.

the mountain to the north west has one of the greatest views when the sun is setting, with the ruins on top it looks EPIC

yes fast travel to every location is just lame.

I mostly try to not fast travel but there are occasional situations where I will. It all depends on what's going on, who I'm traveling with, the robustness of my inventory...those kinds of things. It's often a tactical decision...or I have to get to bed to get up for work. :D

Even better than having it the same as Morrowind, it would be cool if, say, ships moved in real time, so you payed to get on one and could go through the environment as it sailed, and if you want to skip the movement, you just sleep in a bunk or something.

Does Oblivion have that kind of mod? One that locks fast travel but offers a reasonable transportation system?
