We'll have dual swords, but what about dual shields?

Post » Tue May 10, 2011 4:50 pm

Since we can duel just about everything in Skyrim, including magic, I'm wondering if it will be possible to duel shields. You may think that's silly, but if they have shield bashing in the game it could actually be a fighting style. I'm not joking you could seriously kill people with just shields. Besides being absolutely BA it would also be hilarious. I am partly kidding here, but it really could work, and if it does, I'm defiantly going to try it.

I think is has been confirmed you can... although maybe it was a joke. I'm sure I have seen it somewhere referred as "Confused Turtle". Anyway, even being able to do it, it's kinda stupid to actually fight like that.

My guess is that there's going to be a lock against equipping 2 shields simultaneously, but I wouldn't be surprised if a modder removes that lock in due time.

Presumable shields will just be another "1-handed weapon", if so then yes, we'd probably be able to duel wield them, this said you aren't the first person to mention this, nor will you be the last.... I suspect we might be able to do, I just don't expect it to be a really viable fighting option, I suspect shield bashing will be relatively weak damage after all...

While holding the two shields, you can perform a special move called "The Clapper".

I am lying.

In Demons' Souls, you can dualwield shields and people have been known to dualwield them IRL (typically smaller shields of specific types). Use one for blocking, the other one for bashing. My point is that it's neither undoable nor unrealistic.

Indeed. How embarrassing would it be if you got your ass beat by someone with two shields though? That's my first character.

How much do you want to bet that people will try it out once and never again?

In the medieval ages there was actually a fighting style where you use just a shield. Of course their shields had spikes and knifes sticking out of them, but they were still using just a shield. In TES there are lots of shields with spikes, before they were just for looks, but now with the better combat system it make sense if you could take advantage of them. Getting impaled by a sharp object usually kills you, whether its form sword or a shield.

As much freedom the developers can give the player the better....

But why the hell would you want to duel wield shields?

i'm going to use it but it would be pointless seeing as you can't hold the shield indefinately up like in oblivion. you wou have the same defense effectiveness as a person with 1 shield

You would only be able to block with one at a time, the other one is for bashing.

That'd be something, alright. Might be doable... but only worth incorporating into the game if having two shields came with it's own distinct advantages. Not sure if the devs would want to invest the time, though. Something like a bonus to damage resistance, plus special attacks like clapping the shields together and/or a whirlwind knockdown attack might be interesting.
