"We do have Dwarven Ruins" - Todd Howard

Post » Sat Jan 09, 2010 6:42 am

So glad there will be a range of dungeons again. Dwemer ruins were among the best in Morrowind.
Would love it if you bump into Baladas Demnevanni living inside one of the ruins doing research in his later years.
He did say he would be returning to his studies once he finishes with the Telvanni council in 200 years or so. Although I'd suggest he's gotten off that duty sooner ;)

Yeah, about Baladas Demnevanni... I kind of killed him.

I don't think that Todd really didn't want to do that in this game. In a interview, he said that is what made Morrowind special. I think that he is trying to make a more of scale awe for the audience this time around. I think that the "Dwarven" ruins are amazing scale wise

Morrowind isn't special, Todd's delusional. There's no reason to bring back dwarves, if he can't realize they're 'alien'. They're atheists in a world of gods and magic, or does he not agree? Instead, dwarves return for an encore dungeon crawl. Oh joy!

Playing Morrowind right now. Asked some dumner about dwemers and he said that the westerners call them dwarves.

I guess that tells us Todd is from the western part of Tamriel.

Well... This game is set in Skyrim.. I assume that the Nords call the Dwemer their incorrect name "Dwarves".
I doubt that the Nords of Skyrim care whether they are calling an extinct race of Mer their correct name or not so I assume that the locals call them Dwarven ruins.

I'm hoping for the cool bronze-look of dwemer ruins that was in Morrowind, but from the trailer (I'm pretty sure that the ... place you saw in the trailer was inside a dwemer ruin) it doesn't seem like it :(

Is it entirely out of the realm of possibility that Dwemer, at one time, actually were dwarves? Nords are a fairly big race, and if the Dwemer were shorter than Wood Elves, even by a little bit, they would seem as dwarves compared to the big burly ancient Nords.

I'm not going to be a Dwarf vs Dwemer Nazi, seeing as how the developers at Bethesda themselves don't even care (because it was called Dwarven Armor in Oblivion).

I'm also under the assumption that the Dwemer ruins in this game are different than the ones in Morrowind. From what I could tell (in the very faint glimpses we saw of them) their architecture is a combination of masonry and metalwork, as opposed to the strict metalwork we saw in Morrowind. They probably built their halls deep underground the great mountains with little in terms of above-ground structures, and I think they would seem thematically like Tolkein's dwarven cities with a heavy steampunk flair.

Well, their ghosts seemed to be just a little bit taller than your average Dunmer in Morrowind.

The Dwemer were called Dwarves by the giants that at one time walked Nirn.

Yeah the Skyrim Dwemer seem to have a lot of stonework in their ruins.
Stonework which looks a surprisingly lot like Tolkien dwarf stonework... I don't really like it either.

Now I'll silently leave before "really devoted fans" jump at me and choke me... :shifty:

Cool, the Dwemer ruins should provide a nice new playground for exploration and discovery!

It's not known if Dwemer were atheist. It's true that they found some cults stupid and made fun of them, bur Vivec wrote that they worshipped "Reason" and "Logic", with these words capitalized.

I just hope the ruins will look like someone, at some point could have lived there. Unlike the Ayleid ruins in Oblivion.

Already confirmed, but awesome enough to be worth discussing again.

The Dwemer ruins of Skyrim look like http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy297/b_harrison/skyrim/skyrim_gameplay_dungeon.jpg, seemingly.

So the Skyrim dwarves built differently than the ones in Morrowind...
One group lived in a cold, mountainous region, the others next to an active vulcano...

... I really fail to see the problem here...

If you have seen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=db-o_HrpC-0 just fast-forward to 1:10 and Todd says it, the magic words. "Dwarven ruins". (...) I'm extatic to know they're back, by the way.

This wasn't new to me in any way, but I can't remember the exact source, I've read / heard of it before. And YES, I liked those in Morrowind, too and I'm also very excited about it / can't wait to see them in the game !
Bsds: I think in this http://www.pagan-tes-mods.com/portal/images/stories/skaldengesaenge/bethesda/skyrim/gameplaytrailer_1/gameplaytrailer_shot7.jpg we can view the interior of one of these ruins (which would be a visual confirmation, too). ;)

EDIT: Just saw, that 'Fearless Hero' showed almost the same pic. - sorry for beeing late.

The real name for them in Morrowind are "Dwemer" and yes they are mainly dwarfs. They most likely have hiding temples in Skyrim, and most likely have sprung up during this time of dragons. I personally am going to pee my pants when i walk into my first Dwemer dungeon. I haven't been in one since Morrowind. And i always loved the Dwemer lore.

Dragons + Dwemer = :goodjob:
