"We do have Dwarven Ruins" - Todd Howard

Post » Fri Jan 08, 2010 3:50 pm

If you have seen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=db-o_HrpC-0 just fast-forward to 1:10 and Todd says it, the magic words. "Dwarven ruins". I don't know if anyone noticed, so I just figured to make this thread and point this out. I'm extatic to know they're back, by the way.

What do you think about this? Do you like Dwarven ruins? Are you happy they've finally returned or maybe not?

DISCUSS!

Noticed that, but thought it had already been confimed. Not sure if it was or not, just thought it was.

Yeah, they'll make for some unique places to explore. They revealed that Dwarven Spheres (those robot things from Morrowind) are back a while ago.

I loved the Dwemer ruins in Morrowind. I just hope that they have working ballista outside that you can fire at dragons. :celebration:

There was some artwork and even one thing that could (and prbably is) a screenshot of one Dwarven/Dwemer ruin. Quite different from Morrowind, but cool.

We have actually known about this for a while. Markarth Side in fact is built on a Dwemer ruin.

They are both correct.

High Elf = Altmer
Dark Elf = Dunmer
Wood Elf = Bosmer
Orc = Orsimer
Dwarf = Dwemer

I always loved the Dwemer ruins, the mechanical nature of them is such a stark contrast to the rest of the game world. Though I never did like the tail looking piece on the armor set.

Hopefully we get some new lore into the Dwemer and some interesting side quests that lead us to more info on how/why they disappeared.

I'd like to see more Dwarven ghosts again. that was pretty cool! It would be awesome if you went into the Dwarven ruins and got to do some quests for them.

you do realize they're the SAME THING in the elder scrolls world, right?

dwemer are mistakenly called "dwarves" by some people in tamriel, its part of the lore, last i checked... the developers probably use both words interchangably, too...

dwarven ruins would be the same as dwemer ruins... because its just two different names for one race. :rolleyes:

I thought we knew they were in the game a while ago?

Anyway, it's nice to know regardless, Dwemer ruins were a fairly interesting sort of dungeon, and considering that one of my bigger complaints with Oblivion was the blandness of its game world, I will welcome being able to explore more interesting environments in Skyrim.

They are both correct.

High Elf = Altmer
Dark Elf = Dunmer
Wood Elf = Bosmer
Orc = Orsimer
Dwarf = Dwemer

Unfortunately, it seems some people have a hard time grasping this, you'd think a fandom that puts so much emphasis on a setting's lore would pay more heed to said lore, yet there are apparently those who seem to even fail to realize that "dwarf" and "Dwemer" mean the same thing in the Elder Scrolls and both names are in fact used in the setting.

Hopefully we get some new lore into the Dwemer and some interesting side quests that lead us to more info on how/why they disappeared.

I wouldn't expect to see much in the way of new lore on them, after Morrowind, I don't really see too many things on them we don't know that Bethesda could reveal without ruining any sense of mystery surrounding them.

I loved the Dwemer ruins in Morrowind. I love variety in games, and it seems Skyrim is really going to provide that. From different caves and dungeons to Dwemer ruins, hopefully they will get rid of the repetition from Oblivion that they are trying to avoid.

I'm hoping actual dwarves make it into the game, rather than getting teased by their ruins, armor, and weapons.

Morrowind's Dwemer armor was far too anime-like for my taste. I thought Oblivion's was much better, except for the color selection.

I still say it'd be cool if we met Divayth Fyr while exploring some Dwemer ruin, and he tells us about how Yagrum Bagarn died finally, and in his last words he told Divayth a "secret" to their disappearance may lay in wait at ruin X in Skyrim. Perhaps another book like Kargrenacs planbook/journal? Just something that adds a little more to the puzzle.

As long as he meant Dwemer and not Dwarven :facepalm:

He probably just says Dwarven instead of Dwemer because of the lore noobs.

Example 1:
The Todd: We also have Dwemer ruins.
Random person who never played a TES game before: Dwe-lolwut?

Example 2:
The Todd: We also have Dwarven ruins.
Random person who never played a TES game before: Dwarven ruins? Cool sounds interesting.

The dwarven ruins were in my opinion confirmed as we saw the dwarven sphere in February in the GI special. A dwarven spehere doesn't hang around in the wilderness...

High Elf = Altmer
Dark Elf = Dunmer
Wood Elf = Bosmer
Orc = Orsimer
Deep ones = Dwemer

Fixed.

Dwemer is the real (Elven) name for the Dwarves. It is pronounced: DWAY-mare. Some translations are "Short Folk", "Smart Folk" and, what is probably the best translation, "Deep Folk". Probably "Deep" as in "intelligent and multi-levelled" as opposed to a reference to some kind of physical depth.

The name "Dwarves" is used mostly by non-Elven races and has misguiding connotations. There have been rumors that the name "Dwarves" was given by the Giants that lived in Morrowind when the Dwemer first lived there. Thus (possibly) the confusion. A variation on the rumor suggests that the ancestors of Men and Mer, described as the "titantic" Ehlnofey (also known as the Earthbones), named the Dwemer. In this model, the name is actually a play on words, implying both shortness (relative to the "titanic" Ehlnofey), and intelligence. Both of these possibilities introduce what I view as possible factual inconsistencies that are beyond the scope of this guide, but they are still possible.

The most referenced possibility is that "Dwarf" is simply mistranslation of Dwemer, and that it's proper use is in the "Deep Folk" sense, but that Dwe was mistranslated by humans into "Short". Thus "Short Folk", or Dwarves

just clearing that up, sure it appears in lore like a bad itch, doesn't mean its the correct terminology, nothing stopping anyone from calling them Dwarves though.

I think I read somewhere that dwarves was an old mispronunciation from humans.
