I like the way you think OP. Agree with much of what you suggest. Good news is much of that already exists within the universe. Things like .500 S&Ws, 10 gauge shotguns, and anything else that relies on ammo that may not be modeled or used in game, obviously won't be in (we know next to nothing about the ammunition system btw); but modders will more than likely fill in your wish list...using RL models and re-chambering mods like CaliberX. So, no worries. I would only add a 1911 modeled handgun and some sort of long-action rifle like a .300 Win Mag or higher.
Agree with nathanator2 in that they have to carefully balance firearms, since this franchise has a detailed lore established as a backdrop and it is not a modern day FPS. Having said that, Bethesda should choose small arms wisely, and Obsidian did a better than average job of it in NV. Also, there's really no reason we can't see some post-split RL weapon design since the FO timeline could have easily developed something similar (not exact) to what we have in ours, although they will likely fill in those gaps with things like the sporty 10mm pistol and energy weapons. The bottom line is that we share weapon designs right up to sometime in the early 60's, of which most of our modern weapon designs find their origins there or earlier.
Be that as it may, there are still a ton of widely distributed weapons that were designed prior, or during, the split: AKs, ARs, M-14s, M1s, M2s (which more than likely lead them to design a badass .50 BMG antimateriel rifle), Thompsons, 1911s, BARs, M-79s, M60s, most revolvers and lever-action rifles, and even the Remington 700. Perhaps their timeline even improved upon these iconic designs and left schematics behind., from which we can actually produce new weapons (assuming the machinery is still available to use). We did it in NV, we can do it in FO4. It is relevant to note here as well that FO takes place in the continental U.S (at least up to now), and that it's quite an understatement to say that weapon (especially popular weapon designs) distribution is quite widespread.
I didn't start off all that optimistic, but am coming around to having faith in Bethesda that they will get small arms right having seen the SS carrying an M-14 in the Wanderer trailer.
