it could be like this: the triggers are attack, and bumpers are defend. example: you got a sword in right hand and shield in left. right trigger=swing sword right bumper=block with sword left trigger=bash with shield left bumper=block with shield same with spells, except you can't really block. what do you think?
That's actually not half bad, how would it work with 2 handers though?
you could have 2 different options to strike. left or right swing maybe? i think it might be too late in the game's development to implement this however.

Hmmm I believe I remember reading that holding block triggers a bash because blocking is supposed to be more timed now, could be wrong though and this setup sounds alright btw although I use PC so it doesn't matter to me anyway lol
i respect you, but what does halo have to do with anything?
They let you choose you own button layout, from maybe 5 premade choices. I don't think you could make it completely custom, especially with Skyrim there may be issues. But rather than having one "perfect" button lay out, have a couple so people can decide what they like best. Yours is certainly a good combo of versatility, but somebody always wants something different.

i dig what you mean. oblivion didn't have one did it? I just realized that...
I think it sounds awesome Nd allows for a combo system to get involved may ne a bit complicated but definitely something to look into and blocking with magic may not be completely out if the question. You could hold up your arm and it could freeze or whatever your spell you have equipped does.
But demon's souls has two attack buttons for each hand, R1, R2 and L1, L2. Works like a charm.
And Oblivion had the option to let you change attack button and every single other button to anything you want. The main different is using 4 attack buttons or 2, which could not be chosen in oblivion, it was always 3 (spells separate).
