[ALERT] We have a major problem pending.

Post » Sat Sep 04, 2010 11:04 am

There is a patch incoming that will update the game to be ready for Dead Money's achievements, and also fix a bunch of other bugs. For those of us who make use of NVSE either as a modder or a mod connoisseur, you know what that means... waiting for a NVSE update to come out.

However, there's a problem with that: there's no one around to update. Behippo hasn't been on since December 14, around the time of the last patch, and while Ianpatt has his "last visit" set to private, his last post was January 4th. I've tried to raise Scruggs via PM but haven't got a response. I have a feeling that his primary purview is OBSE anyway...

So we have a dilemma here concerning NVSE.

To preserve your NVSE functionality, you'll have to do a few things. First, just in case, copy your FalloutNV.exe and FalloutNVLauncher.exe somewhere outside the base folder.

To ensure that FONV doesn't get updated, you'll have to disable auto-updates and only play the game in Offline mode. For those of you who don't know how to do that, here's how:

1: Right-click Fallout New Vegas in the Steam app and go all the way down to "properties".

2: Go to the "Updates" tab.

3: Change the drop-down menu to "Do not automatically update this game".

Now, the annoying thing is... if you play the game while in Online mode, it will switch auto-updates back on. So... you have to play it in Offline mode to keep this from happening.

4: Go to the "Steam" menu in the upper left corner.

5: Select "Go Offline" and follow the prompts.

You can go back online to play other games, but you MUST go back offline if you want to play FONV and preserve the NVSE-compatible version we have now. Playing in Offline prevents the annoying reactivation of auto-updates.

As for solving this problem... can anyone raise Ianpatt or Behippo and inform them of the impending patch? Or does somebody think they have the programming chops to update NVSE themselves?

I think the NVSE team focuses on OBSE. The thread in the forums is very active. But, it could be that once the new patch is released, the NVSE team will jump all over it. I'm sure it doesn't take much to make NVSE compatible with a new patch. Adding new functions may take time, but not compatibility.

I have reason to think that it may not be so. As I stated, Ianpatt and Behippo apparently are MIA. When the previous patch came out, I poked my head into the NVSE thread and said "There's a patch incoming soon", and one of those two (don't remember which) responded within a day. Since neither apparently have been active in at least a month and a half, I am concerned...

I haven't got a response from Scruggs, and I'm not sure if he has FONV or not.

I am assuming they're releasing this patch to get us ready for the release of Dead Money and I for one will be playing that DLC. Not only will NVSE not be updated but I would think many of the mods that have been unattended since November will not be updated unless the modders return. Will be quite a shakedown for everyone's modded game, that's for sure..

This could be a real problem if NVSE won't be updated anymore. Thanks for the info Madcat.

I'm beginning to think that DarNified may be one of those mods that won't be updated. DarN has not been active since December. I hope all is well with them.

EDIT: Spelling.

Yeah it's a shame. Overall the modding communities of both FO games are going rather slow here lately. Even the Morrowind section appears more active.

Seem so. Fallout 3 never gained as much speed as Morrowind and Oblivion, and i guess New Vegas was simply too different from usual Bethesda games.

Well, can't really blame anyone, there isn't as much sandbox content in NV as in Bethesda's games, and atleast for me that's where the replayablity comes from  Personally i would perfectly happy to consider my current modded version final. Well, maybe i'll wait for Project Nevada's Balance and Equipment modules first :D

thanks for the heads up Madcat.

I for one think that the modders are just jumping ship on this game, because it's just out and out dull.

There's MUCH more to do in FO3 than there is in FONV, there's just not enough explorability and other excitement
to keep interest, heck, there a part of the map you can't even get to until the game is almost over.

I wanted to sneak over there and kill all those Legion losers, just to get the rumors spreading the same,
with when I wiped out the Great Khans.

The most interesting mods are the ones that add FO3 features to the game, like the Bobbleheads etc.

The map svcks, the entire game is really focused on one small area of the map "New Vegas" and the rest
of the map is just devoid of interesting places and encounters.

I keep finding myself loading up FO3 a lot more than FONV.

Well, as povuholo said, things _here_ are rather slow. If the activity of this forum would be a general representative of NV modding in general, then it would be pretty much dead :) But the main action takes place on Nexus these days. Some of the most popular mods there don't even have a release thread here.

And regarding NVSE, well I can't say that I'm not at least a little bit concerned (but mainly because there's a bug I'd really like fixed), but so was I when NV was released and FOSE development seemed pretty much dead at that time. Yet these guys delivered, and they even did it much faster than I expected. So hopefully Ian will pop in 5 minutes after the patch came out and top the speed record from the last time (which was what.. 30 minutes? :)).

Possibilities like this are one reason I try not to use very many mods that rely on other tools....at least not until a final version of the game is done. I'll probably try/use more once I'm sure no more patches/DLC's etc etc. are coming out.

Sawyer mentioned that there will be bunch of weapon tuning too...but didn't say what sort. Could affect a lot of those realism/weapon dmg. mods.

Edit: ps...the 'don't auto-update, Steam' option still doesn't work for me. So in case it doesn't work for you either...don't rely on it. Back up those .exe/launcher files, as mentioned.

I agree, if anyone thinks FNV is dead, just hop on over to nexus. I came back here because it was TOO busy and felt lost in the shuffle but I get all the mods I use from nexus. I don't care for the image share so much, it's ALL females and even those female kids and I just don't care to look at posed chics, I like men and want male screenshots, but there are many other wonderful screenshots and I enjoy popping over to look at the good ones. ;) As far as this patch thing, I know the mods I cared about were updated almost immediately after the last patch and the other ones I used that weren't updated seem to still work anyway. It's a chance I'm willing to take. I didn't like the idea of Steam in the first place and I still don't but I happen to love Fallout New Vegas and with the coming of DA2 on the horizon, I hope to get as much playtime these next couple weeks as I can, then most likely it's hasta la vista Nevada anyway.

It's pretty interesting. For Fallout most of the stuff seems to be happening on Nexus, and less on these forums, while for Morrowind most modders appear to be active on the forums.

Maybe because New Vegas isn't the typical Bethesda game.

Yeah I am not sure what happened it seemed both were very much involved with NVSE and suddenly they both went MIA. I had actually been worried about this for a while now but kept it to myself and thought i was just being paranoid.

Yeah, yours is the one mod I use/would really miss that's dependent on NVSE. But like you said, at least it would still do something. :)

Since I haven't been playing too much and I'm not terribly interested in the DLC, I'll probably do the usual waiting before getting the patch. Since GECK means most changes don't have to be permanent anyway, the only thing I'd be really glad to have is a proper Boone fix, but since I have the mod-fix, I'm in no hurry. One advantage of only having one game on Steam..doesn't matter if I'm off-line forever. Haha.

Hopefully the NVSE people are just pre-occupied with some other project/vacation/happy life happening and will be back before long. :)

Speaking of which, has anyone seen or heard from Xodarap77? (spelled it wrong, but you get the drift)

The rest of my post is slightly off-topic in two different areas, read it anyway

EDIT: Does anybody else have a problem with jslide on the nexus?
whenever I click on a screenshot for a mod, it enlarges so I can see it, but I can only do it once,
when the picture goes back to normal size, and I click on it to enlarge it again, instead it shrinks
down to a tiny icon and says "Powered by Jslide"

Another bit that's off topic, but speaking of Morrowind, I wish they'd get a group of volunteers or whatever
to separate the Morrowind Mods from the Oblivion Mods, and maybe even make a MorrowindNexus.

Unless they've already done it, I've been out of the loop for a couple of years

But we permanently lost a LOT of good mods to Morrowind when a site went down....

MC, I hope that you are wrong. I think that they will resurface and at least update the compatibility.

As for Occam's Razor post, you are obviously playing the wrong game.......................

Just because you like the game doesn't mean I have to.
Don't be so egocentric that everybody has to like the same games that you do.

However, yes, I must be playing the wrong game, because this game for me is not fun.

You like FONV, good for you, I happen to not like it.
However, notice when I was describing that I didn't like, nowhere did I say "Zanderat and everybody else shouldn't like this game, on account of I don't"

That's my observations about the game in MY view and OPINION, last time I checked, I was allowed to have one,
that's how I feel about the game, notice I'm not telling everyone else to dislike the game.

Go read up on "Piaget's Developmental Stages" before you post again telling me I'm playing the wrong game.

I have been pretty busy but I have been adding a few. http://www.pbase.com/ewaldorph/fonv

Is your Mod the one that gives the debug message: "Found NVSE and Useing it"?
I am having difficulty noticing the difference between High, Medium and Low spawns. I am getting the variety from your and the XIII Mods but not the numbers.

EDIT—Actually, I am now starting to see some more spawns. I switched to Medium after reading your comments. I also added AWOP
