I have never played Skyrim, and I want to...

...but I'm a bit confused with all this Special Edition thing.

I own Skyrim and all its DLC packs on Steam, and now I also own the Special Edition. It's downloading right now as I speak.

However, does it fully replaces the old game? If I never played Skyrim, should I uninstall the first game and just stick with the Special Edition?

Thank you very much and have a nice day!

It's a separate game and will play as such.

Oh, I know! What I'm not sure is if by "separate game" they mean "completely new game with different plots and quests" or "the same game but with improved graphics, functionality, etc".

If its option number 1 then it would make sense to keep both the original Skyrim AND the Special Edition, to experience both games.

If its option number 2 then it wouldn't make sense (for people like me who have never played before) to keep the old Skyrim, because the Special Edition would be the same thing, just better and improved.

It is exactly the same game but will look both nicer and run even smoother on consoles.

It should look pretty good on PC also and with MODs you can tailor the graphics to even higher specs if the MOD works right and your computer can run it.

Otherwise quests are the same and the only possible downside to the "Special Edition" is that it comes with all the MODs pre-installed.

So you will start these quests when the game decides rather than when you feel like it.

Cool, thanks for the answer! It seems it would be safe to uninstall the original Skyrim, keep the Special Edition, and start playing in that one.

Thanks again!

That's correct. The "seperate game" thing is a big deal to those of use who don't want to lose our carefully modded 32 bit game. We can play both since the new one is a "seperate gam ".

But you can certainly uninstall the old one and just play the ne one if you want.

Most of us Skyrim old hands advise newbies to play through the game at least once unmodded. That way you can see how it works (or not, as the case may be) and see what you might want to change with mods. I had a pretty good idea of what mods I wanted after two years on Xbox. At this point, very few mods are available for the SE, and it doesn't have the script extender yet that allows you to really change how the game works. So it's a perfect time to do a vanilla play through. And the SE is much more stable than the original. No real reason to play old Skyrim if you don't already have a heavily modded game (I do so I'll be playing both). Unless you'd just like to compare their looks. They play the same, and have the same bugs and glitches that Bethesda never fixed. Dive in and have fun!
