I think Halo:Reach implemented the legs in first person really well.

Not sure how difficult it would be to implement in an Open World RPG, though.

This whole idea of "Everything is harder in an open world game" is getting sort of silly, now. It's exactly as hard as in every other game, just like most things.

Well exactly, I really have no idea how it works.

If what you say is true, I look forward ( And then down* ) to seeing my legs... literally.

Nah, I couldn't really care less. I especially wouldn't like the whole 'camera react to how you are hit' thing, as it could get very annoyingand frustrating if it spun around like a nuisance. I think it was good in Oblivion, as the camera reacted as if you were staggered when you were hit by a power strike.

I dunno, it might be difficult to implement all the different armors, not to mention modded stuff like different skeletons and animations. It might have been easier in Halo: Reach, because they only had the Spartan armor to render.

They have to have models for every armour anyway, what with NPCs being able to wear them and 3rd person mode.

That's what I was thinking.

Would be nice for some professional input from the community.

I don't think you understand. There are two ways to "see your legs".

1) Make your 1st person camera go in the exact area where your head is. The placement is vital. Wrong place could cause clipping with your view. Then fine tune it with settings to make it feel smooth, and change the animations a bit.
Your armors have nothing to do with this, as long as you don't have pauldrons that are 5 feet high, which I think you don't have. Making a new skeleton wouldn't be necessary, but even if it would, it definitely wouldn't be a big problem making one.

2) Add 1st person animations to your "original" 1st person view without changing the 1st person camera. More animations would have to be done. But it's probably the easiest thing to make, but it's hard to become as "good" as 1) if 1) is done correctly. Armors have nothing to do with this, unless your greaves are 5 feet thick, which I think they aren't. Making a new skeleton wouldn't be necessary, but even if it would, it definitely wouldn't be a big problem making one.

People are acting if this is the biggest and hardest task in the world. There have been at least 3-4 mods for Oblivion trying to make 1st person view better by seeing your legs etc...
None of them have succeeded completely, but none have been really continued in work either. By professionals, I think making something like this wouldn't be any problem at all. And it would definitely be worth it imo, because it makes 1st person view a so much more realistic and cool experience.

I have no experience with modding or game development, so maybe you are right. Still, I wonder why so few games have actually done it, if it's as simple as you say it is.

Few games are 1st person. And those that actually are 1st person are pretty much FPS games. And as far as I know, a lot of those FPS games have it so you can "see your legs".
All Halo games, All Crysis games, Mirror's Edge, Far Cry 2 I know for sure. I'm not sure about Call of Duty and those kind of games because I've never played them. So someone could fill me about those kind of games :P

It's not completely simple. It's easy to get a base. But fine tuning may require some time. The mods for Oblivion sadly quit the development pretty early and never got into the "fine tuning" step. If they had continued to work on it, I'm pretty sure it could have been done nicely without any bugs.

Well you could see your arms quite a bit in the trailer, so they may as well show the rest of the body. But it's fantastic to look down and see yourself standing and will be great with all the clothing options.

I don't think I'd want them to cross the street to put this in. It never adds much IMO, and in cases like Halo the devs know what your legs will look like the whole game - but in the hypothetical Skyrim case there are going to be a variety of costumes in the game, and doubtless more added in mods, many of which could look distracting because they protrude or clip,or just shoddy when viewed from that strange first person straight-down-angle.

In general this has been executed to a mediocre level at best in other games, and I would rather continue to ignore it unless gamesas somehow make a breakthrough and implement it better than anybody else ever has.

Having it is super low-priority, having it done poorly is a loss.

But, again, they are all games that only have to show a specific charactermodel's legs, which don't need to be customizable or moddable.

True, but if we look at the Oblivion mods we know that isn't a problem. Armour has really nothing to do with this, unless the armor is extremely anime extreme.
To make all animations look fluid without clipping is more of the problem than the armour. Sometimes the animations need to be changed a bit for this. Sometimes the exact position of the camera needs to be changed a bit.
