have problems with installing morrowind mods.

Post » Tue Oct 16, 2012 9:47 am

i have a fair few mods for morrowind, that i have downloaded (things like morrowind comes alive/master head pack, some of the tamriel rebuilt mods e.t.c).
the problem that i keep on having is that once i have installed them, when i try and run the game,i keep getting warnings about not being able to find lots of the meshes e.t.c.

i have therefore deleted everything, and re installed the main goty master files again.

how can i install the mods (and know that all the meshes e.t.c are there)?

it's driving me crazy (as i really want to run the mods i have).

i did use mlox to try and help, but when adding the updates it recommended e.t.c the game still didn't recognise the extra files (e.g master head update).

thanks in advance.

Are you extracting the archives and keeping the directory structure? data files/meshes etc?

If you install things correctly, it should be fine. Most mods will have the files you need already in their respective folders, all you need to do is copy and paste it into your morrowind/data files folder, and hit "yes" to any warnings (which are basically saying "Paste these here, and the stuff in the folders will be replaced any files with the same name.")

Usually, the mods are built so that after decompressing, you have either folders labeled "meshes" "Textures," a text file readme and a .esp, OR have a folder called "Data Files." If it's the latter, everything you want will be in that folder. Copy/paste everything in the mod into your Morrowind/Data Files folder.

Modding your game can really make your game much more customized to your liking, but the process can be quite involved and a bit of an adventure game unto itself. There are some links in the sticky topics on this forum that I'll point out that can help http://www.gamesas.com/topic/106063-morrowind-mods-faq/page__p__1772641#entry1772641 and http://www.mwmythicmods.com/starting.htm.

One piece of information that I think will help you the most is that not all mods are packaged the same way, and you need to make sure the resources (meshes, textures, etc.) end up in the right place under "Data Files". Many people find it easiest to unpack them to a temporary directory, and then drag (i.e. copy) the plugins to "Data Files", any included "Meshes" to "Data Files/Meshes", "Textures" to "Data Files/Textures", and so on, allowing overwrite.

Once you understand the directory structure under "Data Files", using more advanced tools like Wrye Mash's Installers feature can really make your life a lot easier (as it allows easy uninstall too), but Mash does make some requirements on the mod archive structure and sometimes you might have to repack the archive.

Edit: I forgot to mention, mlox only gives advice about plugin files (.esp/.esm). It has no knowledge of mod resource files (meshes, textures, etc).
